Carotenoid cleavage dioxygenases (CCDs) comprise a superfamily of mononuclear non-heme iron proteins that catalyze the oxygenolytic fission of alkene bonds in carotenoids to generate apocarotenoid products. Some of these enzymes exhibit additional activities such as carbon skeleton rearrangement and trans-cis isomerization.
