Room-Temperature Transport Properties of Graphene with Defects Derived from Oxo-Graphene.

ABSTRACT: In recent years, graphene oxide has been considered as a soluble precursor of graphene for electronic applications. However, the performance lags behind that of graphene due to lattice defects. Here, the relation between the density of defects in the range of 0.2 % and 1.5 % and the transport properties is quantitatively studied. Therefore, the related flakes of monolayers of graphene were prepared from oxo-functionalized graphene (oxo-G). The morphologic structure of oxo-G was imaged by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Field-effect mobility values were determined to range between 0.3 cm² V^-1 s^-1 and 33.2 cm² V^-1 s^-1 , which were inversely proportional to the density of defects. These results provide the first quantitative description of the density of defects and transport properties, which plays an important role for potential applications.

Phonon-mediated room-temperature quantum Hall transport in graphene.

Project description:The quantum Hall (QH) effect in two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) is conventionally observed at liquid-helium temperatures, where lattice vibrations are strongly suppressed and bulk carrier scattering is dominated by disorder. However, due to large Landau level (LL) separation (~2000 K at B = 30 T), graphene can support the QH effect up to room temperature (RT), concomitant with a non-negligible population of acoustic phonons with a wave-vector commensurate to the inverse electronic magnetic length. Here, we demonstrate that graphene encapsulated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) realizes a novel transport regime, where dissipation in the QH phase is governed predominantly by electron-phonon scattering. Investigating thermally-activated transport at filling factor 2 up to RT in an ensemble of back-gated devices, we show that the high B-field behaviour correlates with their zero B-field transport mobility. By this means, we extend the well-accepted notion of phonon-limited resistivity in ultra-clean graphene to a hitherto unexplored high-field realm.

Gas Sensing Properties of Perovskite Decorated Graphene at Room Temperature.

Project description:This paper explores the gas sensing properties of graphene nanolayers decorated with lead halide perovskite (CH3NH3PbBr3) nanocrystals to detect toxic gases such as ammonia (NH3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). A chemical-sensitive semiconductor film based on graphene has been achieved, being decorated with CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite (MAPbBr3) nanocrystals (NCs) synthesized, and characterized by several techniques, such as field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Reversible responses were obtained towards NO2 and NH3 at room temperature, demonstrating an enhanced sensitivity when the graphene is decorated by MAPbBr3 NCs. Furthermore, the effect of ambient moisture was extensively studied, showing that the use of perovskite NCs in gas sensors can become a promising alternative to other gas sensitive materials, due to the protective character of graphene, resulting from its high hydrophobicity. Besides, a gas sensing mechanism is proposed to understand the effects of MAPbBr3 sensing properties.

Room temperature organic magnets derived from sp<sup>3</sup> functionalized graphene.

Project description:Materials based on metallic elements that have d orbitals and exhibit room temperature magnetism have been known for centuries and applied in a huge range of technologies. Development of room temperature carbon magnets containing exclusively sp orbitals is viewed as great challenge in chemistry, physics, spintronics and materials science. Here we describe a series of room temperature organic magnets prepared by a simple and controllable route based on the substitution of fluorine atoms in fluorographene with hydroxyl groups. Depending on the chemical composition (an F/OH ratio) and sp3 coverage, these new graphene derivatives show room temperature antiferromagnetic ordering, which has never been observed for any sp-based materials. Such 2D magnets undergo a transition to a ferromagnetic state at low temperatures, showing an extraordinarily high magnetic moment. The developed theoretical model addresses the origin of the room temperature magnetism in terms of sp2-conjugated diradical motifs embedded in an sp3 matrix and superexchange interactions via -OH functionalization.

Influence of SiO<sub>2</sub> or h-BN substrate on the room-temperature electronic transport in chemically derived single layer graphene.

Project description:The substrate effect on the electronic transport of graphene with a density of defects of about 0.5% (0.5%G) is studied. Devices composed of monolayer 0.5%G, partially deposited on SiO2 and h-BN were used for transport measurements. We find that the 0.5%G on h-BN exhibits ambipolar transfer behaviours under ambient conditions, in comparison to unipolar p-type characters on SiO2 for the same flake. While intrinsic defects in graphene cause scattering, the use of h-BN as a substrate reduces p-doping.

Room-temperature magnetic ordering in functionalized graphene.

Project description:Despite theoretical predictions, the question of room-temperature magnetic order in graphene must be conclusively resolved before graphene can fully achieve its potential as a spintronic medium. Through scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and point I-V measurements, the current study reveals that unlike pristine samples, graphene nanostructures, when functionalized with aryl radicals, can sustain magnetic order. STM images show 1-D and 2-D periodic super-lattices originating from the functionalization of a single sub-lattice of the bipartite graphene structure. Field-dependent super-lattices in 3-nm wide "zigzag" nanoribbons indicate local moments with parallel and anti-parallel ordering along and across the edges, respectively. Anti-parallel ordering is observed in 2-D segments with sizes of over 20 nm. The field dependence of STM images and point I-V curves indicates a spin polarized local density of states (LDOS), an out-of-plane anisotropy field of less than 10 Oe, and an exchange coupling field of 100 Oe at room temperature.

Reversible conversion between graphene nanosheets and graphene nanoscrolls at room temperature.

Project description:In this paper, the reversible conversion between pristine graphene nanosheets and pristine graphene nanoscrolls at room temperature was reported. The graphene nanosheets were rolled up into the graphene nanoscrolls by silver nitrate in ethanol solution, and the fabricated graphene nanoscrolls were unfolded back to the graphene nanosheets in ethanol solution by adding ammonium hydroxide. The dynamic conversion state of the process was confirmed by the morphology of the intermediate samples captured using an optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. Also, AFM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy displayed that the graphene transformed from its nanoscrolls remained the structure and morphology of the started graphene. The reason for the formation of the nanoscrolls was assigned to the silver cyanide particles generated on the edge of the graphene. The freshly formed silver cyanide caused the unbalanced energy of the graphene surface by changing the pi electron distribution and triggered off the graphene to roll up. The unfolding of the graphene nanoscrolls back to the graphene nanosheets was attributed to the removal of the silver cyanide by the ammonia via forming the complex. This reversible conversion might be a novel and facile approach to make graphene nanoscrolls and to store the graphene. Also, it may bring new sight to the conversion research between two-dimension and one-dimension materials.

Energy-filtered cold electron transport at room temperature.

Project description:Fermi-Dirac electron thermal excitation is an intrinsic phenomenon that limits functionality of various electron systems. Efforts to manipulate electron thermal excitation have been successful when the entire system is cooled to cryogenic temperatures, typically <1 K. Here we show that electron thermal excitation can be effectively suppressed at room temperature, and energy-suppressed electrons, whose energy distribution corresponds to an effective electron temperature of ~45 K, can be transported throughout device components without external cooling. This is accomplished using a discrete level of a quantum well, which filters out thermally excited electrons and permits only energy-suppressed electrons to participate in electron transport. The quantum well (~2 nm of Cr2O3) is formed between source (Cr) and tunnelling barrier (SiO2) in a double-barrier-tunnelling-junction structure having a quantum dot as the central island. Cold electron transport is detected from extremely narrow differential conductance peaks in electron tunnelling through CdSe quantum dots, with full widths at half maximum of only ~15 mV at room temperature.

Graphene-Based Composites for Thermoelectric Applications at Room Temperature.

Project description:The thermoelectric materials that operate at room temperature represent a scientific challenge in finding chemical compositions with three optimized, independent parameters, namely electrical and thermal conductivity and the Seebeck coefficient. Here, we explore the concept of the formation of hybrid composites between carbon-based materials and oxides, with the aim of modifying their thermoelectric performance at room temperature. Two types of commercially available graphene-based materials are selected: N-containing reduced graphene oxide (NrGO) and expanded graphite (ExGr). Although the NrGO displays the lowest thermal conductivity at room temperature, the ExGr is characterized by the lowest electrical resistivity and a negative Seebeck coefficient. As oxides, we choose two perspective thermoelectric materials: p-type Ca3Co4O9 and n-type Zn0.995Al0.005O. The hybrid composites were prepared by mechanical milling, followed by a pelleting. The thermoelectric efficiency was evaluated on the basis of its measured electrical resistivity, Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity at room temperature. It was found that that 2 wt.% of ExGr or NrGO leads to an enhancement of the thermoelectric activity of Ca3Co4O9, while, for Zn0.995Al0.005O, the amount of ExGr varies between 5 and 20 wt.%. The effect of the composites' morphology on the thermoelectric properties is discussed on the basis of SEM/EDS experiments.

A fast and sensitive room-temperature graphene nanomechanical bolometer.

Project description:Bolometers are a powerful means of detecting light. Emerging applications demand that bolometers work at room temperature, while maintaining high speed and sensitivity, properties which are inherently limited by the heat capacity of the detector. To this end, graphene has generated interest, because it has the lowest mass per unit area of any material, while also possessing extreme thermal stability and an unmatched spectral absorbance. Yet, due to its weakly temperature-dependent electrical resistivity, graphene has failed to challenge the state-of-the-art at room temperature. Here, in a departure from conventional bolometry, we use a graphene nanoelectromechanical system to detect light via resonant sensing. In our approach, absorbed light heats and thermally tensions a suspended graphene resonator, thereby shifting its resonant frequency. Using the resonant frequency as a readout for photodetection, we achieve a room-temperature noise-equivalent power (2 pW Hz-1/2) and bandwidth (from 10 kHz up to 1.3 MHz), challenging the state-of-the-art.

Room-Temperature Columnar Liquid Crystals from Twisted and Macrocyclic 9,9'-Bifluorenylidene Mesogen with Ambipolar Carrier Transport Properties.

Project description:We herein report the synthesis and characterization of a series of twisted and conjugated 9,9'-bifluorenylidene (BF) derivatives and a ladder-shaped cyclic dimer (CBF) bearing eight long alkoxy chains at peripheral positions. These contorted aromatics formed hexagonal columnar liquid crystalline mesophases over a wide temperature range, including room temperature. Ambipolar carrier transport properties with electron and hole mobility values of approximately 10-4 and 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1, respectively, were achieved for the BF derivatives forming a monodomain orientation at ambient temperature.
