Primary pneumonectomy, pneumonectomy after induction therapy, and salvage pneumonectomy: a comparison of surgical and prognostic outcomes.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Surgical outcomes of pneumonectomy for lung cancer differ based on various therapeutic strategies.

Methods

One hundred and fifty-one patients who underwent pneumonectomy were divided into three groups based on patients' therapeutic conditions: a primary pneumonectomy group (no preoperative treatment, n=137), an induction group (planned surgery after induction chemotherapy or chemoradiotherapy, n=10), and a salvage group (surgery for residual or enlarged lesions after radical non-operative therapies, n=4).

Results

Multivariate analysis showed that completeness of resection (P=0.003), subcategorization of whether there was no invasion, infiltration only to the main bronchus or pleura, or invasion of other deeper structures (P=0.008), and the presence or absen
