Improved Performance of Ternary Solar Cells by Using BODIPY Triads.

ABSTRACT: Two boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) triads, namely BODIPY-1 and BODIPY-2, were synthesized and incorporated with poly-3-hexyl thiophene: (6,6)-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) P3HT:PCBM. The photovoltaic performance of BODIPY:P3HT:PCBM ternary solar cells was increased, as compared to the control binary solar cells (P3HT:PCBM). The optimized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of BODIPY-1:P3HT:PCBM was improved from 2.22% to 3.43%. The enhancement of PCE was attributed to cascade charge transfer, an improved external quantum efficiency (EQE) with increased short circuit current (Jsc), and more homogeneous morphology in the ternary blend.

Enhanced performance of PTB7-Th:PCBM based active layers in ternary organic solar cells.

Project description:The present study aims at understanding the role of incorporating Cu2S nanocrystals (NCs) as a third component in ternary organic solar cells. Ternary photoactive blends consisting of conjugated polymer poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b;4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl-alt-(4-(2-ethylhexyl)-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-)-(2-carboxylate-2-6-diyl)] (PTB7-Th), fullerene derivative phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and different wt% of Cu2S NCs were formulated and were employed to fabricate ternary OSCs having a device architecture of ITO/ZnO/PTB7-Th:Cu2S NCs:PCBM/MoO3/Ag. It has been observed that with the addition of 3 wt% of Cu2S NCs, an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.20% is obtained against the PCE of 6.96% for reference devices. EIS measurements and AFM studies suggests that the presence of Cu2S NCs facilitates formation of cascading energy levels, provides smoother surfaces and helps in suppressing trap-assisted recombination.

High-performance ternary blend polymer solar cells involving both energy transfer and hole relay processes.

Project description:The integration of multiple materials with complementary absorptions into a single junction device is regarded as an efficient way to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). However, because of increased complexity with one more component, only limited high-performance ternary systems have been demonstrated previously. Here we report an efficient ternary blend OSC with a PCE of 9.2%. We show that the third component can reduce surface trap densities in the ternary blend. Detailed studies unravel that the improved performance results from synergistic effects of enlarged open circuit voltage, suppressed trap-assisted recombination, enhanced light absorption, increased hole extraction, efficient energy transfer and better morphology. The working mechanism and high device performance demonstrate new insights and design guidelines for high-performance ternary blend solar cells and suggest that ternary structure is a promising platform to boost the efficiency of OSCs.

BODIPY dyads and triads: synthesis, optical, electrochemical and transistor properties.

Project description:A series of D-A dyads and D-A-D triads molecular systems based on triphenylamine and 9-ethyl-carbarzole as donor (D) and BODIPY as acceptor (A) has been designed and synthesized. The optoelectronic properties including optical, electrochemical, and charge carrier mobility of these molecules have been investigated. We found that the D-A-D triads exhibited broader absorption, raising the HOMO energy levels and increase hole carrier mobilities. Analysis surface morphology revealed that BODIPY containing carbazole demonstrated smooth film and no macro phase aggregation was observed upon thermal annealing.

Donor Derivative Incorporation: An Effective Strategy toward High Performance All-Small-Molecule Ternary Organic Solar Cells.

Project description:Thick-film all-small-molecule (ASM) organic solar cells (OSCs) are preferred for large-scale fabrication with printing techniques due to the distinct advantages of monodispersion, easy purification, and negligible batch-to-batch variation. However, ASM OSCs are typically constrained by the morphology aspect to achieve high efficiency and maintain thick film simultaneously. Specifically, synchronously manipulating crystallinity, domain size, and phase segregation to a suitable level are extremely challenging. Herein, a derivative of benzodithiophene terthiophene rhodanine (BTR) (a successful small molecule donor for thick-film OSCs), namely, BTR-OH, is synthesized with similar chemical structure and absorption but less crystallinity relative to BTR, and is employed as a third component to construct BTR:BTR-OH:PC71BM ternary devices. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.14% and fill factor (FF) of 74.2% are successfully obtained in ≈300 nm OSC, which outperforms BTR:PC71BM (9.05% and 69.6%) and BTR-OH:PC71BM (8.00% and 65.3%) counterparts, and stands among the top values for thick-film ASM OSCs. The performance enhancement results from the enhanced absorption, suppressed bimolecular/trap-assisted recombination, improved charge extraction, optimized domain size, and suitable crystallinity. These findings demonstrate that the donor derivative featuring similar chemical structure but different crystallinity provides a promising third component guideline for high-performance ternary ASM OSCs.

Emphasizing the Operational Role of a Novel Graphene-Based Ink into High Performance Ternary Organic Solar Cells.

Project description:A novel solution-processed, graphene-based material was synthesized by treating graphene oxide (GO) with 2,5,7-trinitro-9-oxo-fluorenone-4-carboxylic acid (TNF-COOH) moieties, via simple synthetic routes. The yielded molecule N-[(carbamoyl-GO)ethyl]-N'-[(carbamoyl)-(2,5,7-trinitro-9-oxo-fluorene)] (GO-TNF) was thoroughly characterized and it was shown that it presents favorable highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels to function as a bridge component between the polymeric donor poly({4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl}{3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl)carbonyl] thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl}) (PTB7) and the fullerene derivative acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric-acid-methylester (PC71BM). In this context, a GO-TNF based ink was prepared and directly incorporated within the binary photoactive layer, in different volume ratios (1%-3% ratio to the blend) for the effective realization of inverted ternary organic solar cells (OSCs) of the structure ITO/PFN/PTB7:GO-TNF:PC71BM/MoO3/Al. The addition of 2% v/v GO-TNF ink led to a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.71% that was enhanced by ~13% as compared to the reference cell.

Improved performance and stability in quantum dot solar cells through band alignment engineering.

Project description:Solution processing is a promising route for the realization of low-cost, large-area, flexible and lightweight photovoltaic devices with short energy payback time and high specific power. However, solar cells based on solution-processed organic, inorganic and hybrid materials reported thus far generally suffer from poor air stability, require an inert-atmosphere processing environment or necessitate high-temperature processing, all of which increase manufacturing complexities and costs. Simultaneously fulfilling the goals of high efficiency, low-temperature fabrication conditions and good atmospheric stability remains a major technical challenge, which may be addressed, as we demonstrate here, with the development of room-temperature solution-processed ZnO/PbS quantum dot solar cells. By engineering the band alignment of the quantum dot layers through the use of different ligand treatments, a certified efficiency of 8.55% has been reached. Furthermore, the performance of unencapsulated devices remains unchanged for over 150 days of storage in air. This material system introduces a new approach towards the goal of high-performance air-stable solar cells compatible with simple solution processes and deposition on flexible substrates.

Highly efficient and stable binary and ternary organic solar cells using polymerized nonfused ring electron acceptors.

Project description:This study reports the successful design and synthesis of two novel polymerized nonfused ring electron acceptors, P-2BTh and P-2BTh-F, derived from the high-performance nonfused ring electron acceptor, 2BTh-2F. Prepared via Stille polymerization, these polymers feature thiophene and fluorinated thiophene as π-bridge units. Notably, P-2BTh-F, with difluorothiophene as the π-bridge, exhibits a more planar backbone and red-shifted absorption spectrum compared with P-2BTh. When employed in organic solar cells (OSCs) with PBDB-T as the donor material, P-2BTh-F-based devices demonstrate an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 11%, exceeding the 8.7% achieved by P-2BTh-based devices. Furthermore, all-polymer solar cells utilizing PBDB-T:P-2BTh-F exhibit superior storage stability. Additionally, P-2BTh-F was explored as a functional additive in a high-performance binary system, enhancing stability while maintaining comparable PCE (19.45%). This strategy offers a cost-effective approach for fabricating highly efficient and stable binary and ternary organic solar cells, opening new horizons for cost-effective and durable solar cell development.

The effect of co-sensitization methods between N719 and boron dipyrromethene triads on dye-sensitized solar cell performance.

Project description:A boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) featuring triphenylamine triad, BD, has been synthesized as a co-sensitizer in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The optical and electrochemical properties of BD have been characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. DSCs containing co-sensitizers, N719 and BD, have been prepared in two procedures using co-deposition and stepwise deposition. The influences of the staining processes, co-deposition and stepwise deposition on dye loading, dye dispersion on a TiO2 photoanode and DSC performance have been investigated using FTIR, SEM-EDS, I-V test and IPCE measurement, respectively. We found that stepwise co-sensitization provided higher solar cell efficiency, compared to those stained with a co-deposition method. N719/5% BD showed the highest power conversion efficiency of 5.14%. Interestingly, the enhanced device efficiency was 66% higher than that of a device containing the single N719 dye.

Interface Engineering through Atomic Layer Deposition towards Highly Improved Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:A composite photoanode comprising ultralong ZnO nanobelts and TiO2 nanoparticles was prepared and its performance in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was optimized and compared to the photoanode consisting of conventional TiO2 nanoparticles. The ultralong ZnO nanobelts were synthesized in high yield by a facile solution approach at 90°C followed by annealing at 500°C. The effect of the ratio of ZnO nanobelts to TiO2 nanoparticles on the light scattering, specific surface area, and interface recombination were investigated. An optimum amount of ZnO nanobelts enhanced the photon-conversion efficiency by 61.4% compared to that of the conventional TiO2 nanoparticles. To further reduce the recombination rate and increase the carrier lifetime, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) technique was utilized to coat a continuous TiO2 film surrounding the ZnO nanobelts and TiO2 nanoparticles, functioning as a barrier-free access of all electrons to conductive electrodes. This ALD treatment improved the interface contact within the whole photoanode system, finally leading to significant enhancement (137%) in the conversion efficiency of DSSCs.

Simple Solvent Treatment Enabled Improved PEDOT:PSS Performance toward Highly Efficient Binary Organic Solar Cells.

Project description:PedotPSS is the most popular hole-transporting material (HTM) for conventional structural organic solar cell (OSC) devices, whose performance is of great importance for realizing high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, its performance in OSC devices has been continuously challenged by various replacing materials and different doping strategies, for better conductivity, work function, and surface property. Here, we report a simple dopant-free method to tune the phase separation of the PEDOT:PSS layer, which results in better charge transport and extraction in devices. Specifically, high PCEs for binary polymer-small-molecule (>18%) and polymer-polymer (>17%) systems are simultaneously achieved. This work engineeringly provides encouraging improvement for OSC device performance with easy modification and scientifically offers insights into tuning the property of the PEDOT:PSS layer.
