The synthesis of eukaryotic glycans - branched sugar oligomers attached to cell-surface proteins and lipids - is organized like a factory assembly line. Specific enzymes within successive compartments of the Golgi apparatus determine where new monomer building blocks are linked to the growing oligomer.
