Ultra-High Through-Cure of (Meth)Acrylate Copolymers via Photofrontal Polymerization.

ABSTRACT: Photopolymerization offers substantial advantages in terms of time, temperature, energy consumption, and spatial control of the initiation. The application however is strongly limited due to the constrained penetration of light into thick films. Strategies to overcome the problem of limited curing depth, as well as to improve the curing of shadow areas, involve dual curing, frontal polymerization, and upconversion of particles. Whereas excellent results have been accomplished applying photofrontal polymerization on a theoretical level, few studies report on practical applications achieving high curing depth within short time. This study aims to investigate the potential of photofrontal polymerization, performed only with photoinitiator and light, for the fast and easy production of several-centimeter-thick (meth)acrylic layers. Monomer/ initiator systems were evaluated with respect to their optical density as well as photobleaching behavior. Moreover, depth-dependent polymerization was studied in specimens of varying monomer ratio and photoinitiator concentration. When an ideal photoinitiator concentration was selected, curing up to 52 mm in depth was accomplished within minutes.

Project description:Conversion plateaus rapidly in radical photopolymerizations (RPPs) following discontinuation of irradiation due to rapid termination of reactive radicals, which restricts the wider use of RPPs in applications that involve nonuniform light access including those with attenuated light transmission or irregular surfaces. Based on our recent report of a radical dark-curing photoinitiator (DCPI) that continues polymerization beyond the cessation of irradiation by enabling latent redox initiation with photo-released amine in the presence of a suitable oxidant, we developed a new DCPI with an absorption spectrum that extends well into the visible range. Our design process involved a series of computational investigations of candidate molecules, including a systematic study of substituents and their position-dependent effects on absorption characteristics, electronic transitions, and the photochemical mechanism and its associated energetics. Our quantum chemical computations identified the target compound 5,7-dimethoxy-6-bromo-3-aroylcoumarin-DMPT/BPh4 and predicted that it would facilitate the dark-curing mechanism by concurrent photo-radical generation and photo-induced release of an efficient redox reductant under visible irradiation. This reductant-tethered chromophore was then synthesized and optically characterized with UV-vis spectroscopy that revealed its strong visible-light absorption with a molar absorptivity of 5710 M-1 cm-1 at 405 nm and 50 M-1 cm-1 at 455 nm. We then demonstrated extensive dark-curing of >35% additional conversion over 25 min following brief activation of the shelf-stable one-part system by irradiation with a 455 nm LED that was ceased at 20% conversion. In contrast, shuttering irradiation of the control formulation at that same point resulted in immediate cessation of conversion, which plateaued at 20%. We determined a remarkable initiator efficiency of 2.82 that results from the additional redox-generated radicals with a 77% photo-reductant generation quantum yield. The combination of superior photo- and dark-curing efficiencies of this new visible DCPI is expected to open new application opportunities in RPP, especially those involving resins that are highly light attenuating, surfaces that possess irregular features that produce uneven irradiance, and production lines where continued dark-curing downstream of the light activation step enhances line efficiencies.

Project description:The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of multifunctionality on material properties of synthetic polymer aerogels. For this purpose, we present the synthesis and characterization of monolithic dendritic-type urethane-acrylate monomers based on an aliphatic/flexible (Desmodur N3300), or an aromatic/rigid (Desmodur RE) triisocyanate core. The terminal acrylate groups (three at the tip of each of the three branches, nine in total) were polymerized with 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) via free radical chemistry. The resulting wet-gels were dried with supercritical fluid (SCF) CO₂. Aerogels were characterized with ATR-FTIR and solid-state 13C NMR. The porous network was probed with N₂-sorption and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal stability of aerogels was studied with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Most aerogels were macroporous materials (porosity > 80%), with high thermal stability (up to 300 °C). Aerogels were softer at low monomer concentrations and more rigid at higher concentrations. The material properties were compared with those of analogous aerogels bearing only one acrylate moiety at the tip of each branch and the same cores, and with those of analogous aerogels bearing norbornene instead of acrylate moieties. The nine-terminal acrylate-based monomers of this study caused rapid decrease of the solubility of the growing polymer and made possible aerogels with much smaller particles and much higher surface areas. For the first time, aliphatic/flexible triisocyanate-based materials could be made with similar properties in terms of particle size and surface areas to their aromatic/rigid analogues. Finally, it was found that with monomers with a high number of crosslinkable groups, material properties are determined by multifunctionality and thus aerogels based on 9-acrylate- and 9-norbornene-terminated monomers were similar. Materials with aromatic cores are carbonizable with satisfactory yields (20⁻30% w/w) to mostly microporous materials (BET surface areas: 640⁻740 m² g-1; micropore surface areas: 360⁻430 m² g-1).

Project description:The radical (co)polymerization of long-chain α-olefins (C4+) to produce high molecular weight (Mw) polymers is of great importance. However, this process is currently faced with significant challenges due to the presence of less reactive allylic radicals during radical (co)polymerization, leading to oligomers or polymers with extremely low Mw (less than 1 × 104 g mol-1). Using copolymerization of 1-octene with methyl acrylate (MA) as a proof-of-concept for addressing this challenge, we present a feasible method for synthesizing high Mw α-olefin copolymers via scandium trifluoromethanesulfonate (Sc(OTf)3)-mediated radical copolymerization. In this case, copolymers of 1-octene and MA (poly(1-octene-alt-MA)) with a Mw exceeding 3 × 104 g mol-1 were successfully synthesized in the presence of Sc(OTf)3. Meanwhile, the presence of alternating 1-octene-MA sequential structures was observed. To further enhance the Mw of poly(1-octene-alt-MA), a difunctional comonomer, 1,7-octadiene, was introduced to copolymerize with 1-octene and MA. The results indicate that the incorporation of difunctional comonomer leads to a significant increase in the Mw of the copolymers synthesized. The addition of 1 mol% of 1,7-octadiene resulted in a copolymer with a remarkably high Mw of up to 13.45 × 104 g mol-1 while still maintaining a high degree of the alternating 1-octene-MA sequence (41%). The influence of polymerization parameters on the molecular weight were also investigated. Increasing the monomer concentration, reducing the dosage of initiator, and lowering the polymerization temperature have been found to be advantageous in enhancing the molecular weight. This approach has also been successfully applied to the synthesis of high molecular weight alternating copolymers of other long-chain α-olefins, including 1-hexene, 1-decene and 1-tetradecane, with methyl acrylate. In summary, this study provides a feasible method for converting "less activated" α-olefins into high Mw olefin copolymers. This approach holds significant potential for the production of value-added polyolefins, thus offering promising prospects for future applications.
