Institutional distance and Turkey's outward foreign direct investment.

ABSTRACT: This study empirically examines the relation between institutional distance (ID) and Turkey's outward foreign direct investment (TODI). The empirical results use panel data from 2002 to 2016 to show that TODI is attracted to countries with better institutional quality. We also find that host country political stability, government effectiveness, control of corruption, and rule of law attract TODI. We also document that TODI is positively related to cultural distance (CD) and ID is not moderated by CD.

Governance, financial development and China's outward foreign direct investment.

Project description:Deeply investigating the relationship between governance, financial development, and outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is beneficial to formulating effective policies to accelerate Chinese firms' pace of overseas expansion. Based on the theoretical mechanism analysis, this paper empirically analyzes the impact of Asian governance and financial development on China's OFDI using the panel data of 37 Asian countries from 2003 to 2017. The results show that the host country governance has a negative and statistically significant impact on China's direct investment in Asia. The conclusion remains valid even after overcoming the interference of endogenous and economic cycle fluctuations. Moreover, using the mediating effect model, we find that financial development is an important channel through which host country governance affects China's OFDI. In further discussion, the findings suggest that with the scale of OFDI expanding, the role of governance takes an inverted "U" shape, and the "Belt and Road" initiative (BRI) weakens the negative impact of governance quality on China's OFDI. Furthermore, governance has shown more remarkable restraint on China's OFDI in neighboring, coastal, and low-income countries in the heterogeneity test. From the perspective of host country governance, this paper provides more specific guidance to formulate China's direct investment policy in Asia.

China's outward foreign direct investment in energy sector: The role of "intimate" relations between countries.

Project description:Based on the data of China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) in energy sector to 133 countries from 2005 to 2014, this paper uses a gravity model to investigate the impact of "intimate" relations on China's OFDI locations in energy sector. We find that the "intimate" relations have significant effects on China's OFDI locations in energy sector, namely: bilateral senior leaders' visits, institutional distance, genetic distance, and immigration. Holding other factors fixed, for each one more bilateral senior leaders' visit between China and the host country, China's OFDI in energy sector for the host country will increase by 5.44%. If the genetic distance from China and host country increases by 1%, China's OFDI in energy sector will fall by 1.69%. For every 1% increase in the institutional distance between China and host country, China's energy OFDI will decrease by 1.09%. For every 1% increase in a country's immigration to China, China's energy OFDI will increase by 0.46%. Further, after distinguishing developed and developing countries, we find that compared with developed countries, "intimate" relations have greater impacts on China's energy OFDI in developing countries. Finally, based on the dominance analysis, considering China's "intimate" relations with countries along the "Belt and Road" and current locations of China's OFDI, we find that China should further expand energy investment in countries along the "Belt and Road".

The interaction between domestic and outward foreign direct investment in China: The influence of region-specific context.

Project description:Since the Chinese government launched the Belt and Road Initiative, state-owned enterprises and private conglomerates have increased overseas investment. The massive outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) profoundly affects China's regional development to varying degrees. Existing studies have mainly investigated the effect of foreign direct investment inflow on domestic investment (DI), but only a few studies have examined the impact of OFDI on DI. Though most researchers have indicated that OFDI activities can promote (or inhibit) DI in a particular country, they have overlooked how OFDI's geographical distribution and motivation across the Chinese macro-regions have influenced DI. To fill these gaps, this paper examines the impact of such OFDI on DI in China and its macro-regions, using a province-level dataset from 2005 to 2021. It employs panel regression and rigorously tests the data using the generalised method of moments to address endogeneity issues. We also investigate the investment motivations of the top 100 Chinese multinationals with significant FDI outflows from 2015 to 2018. We find that OFDI has positively and markedly influenced DI in eastern coastal and central inland regions but not in western China. Though OFDI has positively affected DI in China, it may not hold in a regional context. Such OFDI seeks to enhance the efficiency of existing investment, expand domestic markets, and look for strategic assets. Our findings indicate that central and provincial governments could develop OFDI policies to cater to significant regional variations. Local governments should also consider the various OFDI motivations of Chinese multinationals and provide adequate support for developing and implementing local investment policies that encourage domestic firms to invest abroad.

The determinants of China’s outward foreign direct investment: a vector error correction model analysis of coastal and landlocked countries

Project description:An essential objective of China’s outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) is to expand international trade and access to overseas markets to garner resources and improve transportation routes. This study identifies the determinants of China’s OFDI activities in the short and long term, focusing on 138 countries that are part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). It is the first study to evaluate the system’s contribution of location determinants, including the four factors of economy, logistics, energy, and politics, to China’s OFDI by employing a vector error correction model with panel data from 2007 to 2019. In addition, we compare the influence of the variables in coastal and landlocked countries. Panel Granger causality and impulse response tests, variance decomposition, and forecast analysis were conducted to analyze and forecast China’ OFDI. The results show that China’s OFDI in both coastal and landlocked countries is statistically sensitive to the variables of economy, energy, logistics, and politics in host countries engaged in the BRI. It also shows that improving logistics infrastructure and the political investment environment in landlocked countries, this can positively attract China’s OFDI. Level of development, foreign direct investment and domestic investment in food manufacturing.

Project description:Background: Whilst the literature on the complementarity and substitutability of foreign direct investment (FDI) on domestic investment (DI) is not uncommon, the facet of food manufacturing is non-existent. This paper fills this void by investigating the effect of FDI on DI in the food manufacturing sector for developing, economies in transition and developed countries. Methods: Using an unbalanced panel data of 49 countries from 1993 to 2016, from FAOSTAT, estimated by the system generalised method of moments (GMM), the Wald statistics for the short and long-run effects of FDI on DI were computed for the development groups. Results: Developed economies experienced a crowd-out effect of FDI on DI in the short run, whilst the others experienced no significant effect. In the case of the long run, food manufacturing sectors of all three development groups exhibited a crowd-out effect. The effect in the long run for all development groups together is a crowd-in. Analysing all country groups together could mask the results of the various country groups. Conclusions: A review of investment policies to priorities FDI entry mode that favour domestic investment is needed. Improvement of the investment regulatory and administrative efficiency among others are recommended.

More than just investment: Causality analysis between foreign direct investment and economic growth

Project description:This study examines the causal nexus between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the economic growth of seven (7) regions encompassing 117 countries. A more recent panel dataset over the period 2010–2020 was analysed using the Granger causality approach and panel VAR/block exogeneity test to conduct predictive analysis among the panel series. Wavelet coherence techniques too were adapted in bringing novelty and further justifications to the research in exploring the interaction effects of the variables, which are yet to be popularised in the studied discipline. The empirical results indicate the presence of bi-directional causality between FDI and economic growth globally and in the Asian region. In contrast, the causality is uni-directional in the American region. A non-directional causality was discovered in European, Oceanian, Mediterranean, and African regions, and the findings were consistent with the outcome of the wavelet coherence technique results. The study further classifies the regions into three cross-market categories such as developed, emerging and frontier markets. The results imply no causality for most developed and emerging economies in the regional analysis. Findings also provide insights for governments and policymakers worldwide to formulate policies on directing FDI flows and propositions for a host country to become a more conducive destination for FDI and accelerate economic growth.

Assessing the climate change exposure of foreign direct investment.

Project description:This study deploys newly available data to examine the exposure of multinational companies' overseas investments to physical climate risks. Globally, foreign investments are significantly exposed to lower physical climate risks, compared with local firms across countries. Within countries however, the differences of physical climate risks between foreign and local facilities are small. We also examine China, as it is fast becoming one of the largest sources of outward foreign investment across the globe. We find that foreign direct investment from China is significantly more exposed to water stress, floods, hurricanes and typhoon risks across countries, compared with other foreign facilities. Within host countries however, once again the physical climate risks of Chinese overseas facilities are comparable to those of non-Chinese foreign investments.

Air Pollution, Foreign Direct Investment, and Mental Health: Evidence From China.

Project description:Recently, there has been interest in the relationship between mental health and air pollution; however, the results are inconsistent and the contribution of foreign direct investment (FDI) has received little attention. This article studies the effects of air pollution on mental health and the moderating role of FDI based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data in 2015 and 2018 applying the fixed effects panel regression approach and the threshold model. The results show that mental health is adversely affected by air pollution, especially PM2.5, PM10, sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Second, FDI has an alleviating influence on the negative relationship. Third, the effects of air pollution and FDI are heterogeneous based on regional characteristics, including location, medical resource and investment in science and technology, and individual characteristics covering education level, age, income, and physical health. Finally, the threshold effects show that FDI has a moderating effect when it is >1,745.59 million renminbi (RMB). There are only 11.19% of cities exceeding the threshold value in China. When the value of air quality index (AQI) exceeds 92.79, air pollution is more harmful to mental health. Government should actively introduce high-quality FDI at the effective level and control air pollution to improve mental health.

Foreign Direct Investment in oil-abundant countries: The role of institutions.

Project description:The present work reassesses the impact of good governance and democracy on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in oil-abundant countries. To this end, we estimate the effect of host countries' institutions on greenfield FDI, using a gravity equation for a dataset that covers 182 countries during 2003-2012. Our findings confirm that compliance to rule of law, lack of corruption, political stability and democracy could boost new FDI links through the extensive margin. Our results could not rule out the "oil curse", meaning that oil producers attract fewer new greenfield projects than similar countries without oil. Unlike other studies, we show that the impact of institutions is not necessarily undermined by the presence of natural resources.
