Slow Proton Transfer in Nanoconfined Water.

ABSTRACT: The transport of protons in nanoconfined environments, such as in nanochannels of biological or artificial proton conductive membranes, is essential to chemistry, biology, and nanotechnology. In water, proton diffusion occurs by hopping of protons between water molecules. This process involves the rearrangement of many hydrogen bonds and as such can be strongly affected by nanoconfinement. We study the vibrational and structural dynamics of hydrated protons in water nanodroplets stabilized by a cationic surfactant using polarization-resolved femtosecond infrared transient absorption spectroscopy. We determine the time scale of proton hopping in the center of the water nanodroplets from the dynamics of the anisotropy of the transient absorption signals. We find that in small nanodroplets with a diameter <4 nm, proton hopping is more than 10 times slower than in bulk water. Even in relatively large nanodroplets with a diameter of ∼7 nm, we find that the rate of proton hopping is slowed by ∼4 times compared with bulk water.

Accelerating slow excited state proton transfer.

Project description:Visible light excitation of the ligand-bridged assembly [(bpy)(2)Ru(a)(II)(L)Ru(b)(II)(bpy)(OH(2))(4+)] (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridine; L is the bridging ligand, 4-phen-tpy) results in emission from the lowest energy, bridge-based metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state (L(-•))Ru(b)(III)-OH(2) with an excited-state lifetime of 13 ± 1 ns. Near-diffusion-controlled quenching of the emission occurs with added HPO(4)(2-) and partial quenching by added acetate anion (OAc(-)) in buffered solutions with pH control. A Stern-Volmer analysis of quenching by OAc(-) gave a quenching rate constant of k(q) = 4.1 × 10(8) M(-1) • s(-1) and an estimated pK(a)* value of ~5 ± 1 for the [(bpy)(2)Ru(a)(II)(L(•-))Ru(b)(III)(bpy)(OH(2))(4+)]* excited state. Following proton loss and rapid excited-state decay to give [(bpy)(2)Ru(a)(II)(L)Ru(b)(II)(bpy)(OH)(3+)] in a H(2)PO(4)(-)/HPO(4)(2-) buffer, back proton transfer occurs from H(2)PO(4)(-) to give [(bpy)(2)Ru(a)(II)(L)Ru(b)(bpy)(OH(2))(4+)] with k(PT,2) = 4.4 × 10(8) M(-1) • s(-1). From the intercept of a plot of k(obs) vs. [H(2)PO(4)(-)], k = 2.1 × 10(6) s(-1) for reprotonation by water providing a dramatic illustration of kinetically limiting, slow proton transfer for acids and bases with pK(a) values intermediate between pK(a)(H(3)O(+)) = -1.74 and pK(a)(H(2)O) = 15.7.

Chemistry in nanoconfined water.

Project description:Nanoconfined liquids have extremely different properties from the bulk, which profoundly affects chemical reactions taking place in nanosolvation. Here, we present extensive ab initio simulations of a vast set of chemical reactions within a water lamella that is nanoconfined by mineral surfaces, which might be relevant to prebiotic peptide formation in aqueous environments. Our results disclose a rich interplay of distinct effects, from steric factors typical of reactions occurring in small spaces to a charge-stabilization effect in nanoconfined water at extreme conditions similar to that observed in bulk water when changing from extreme to ambient conditions. These effects are found to modify significantly not only the energetics but also the mechanisms of reactions happening in nanoconfined water in comparison to the corresponding bulk regime.

Water-assisted proton transfer in ferredoxin I.

Project description:The role of water molecules in assisting proton transfer (PT) is investigated for the proton-pumping protein ferredoxin I (FdI) from Azotobacter vinelandii. It was shown previously that individual water molecules can stabilize between Asp(15) and the buried [3Fe-4S](0) cluster and thus can potentially act as a proton relay in transferring H(+) from the protein to the μ(2) sulfur atom. Here, we generalize molecular mechanics with proton transfer to studying proton transfer reactions in the condensed phase. Both umbrella sampling simulations and electronic structure calculations suggest that the PT Asp(15)-COOH + H(2)O + [3Fe-4S](0) → Asp(15)-COO(-) + H(2)O + [3Fe-4S](0) H(+) is concerted, and no stable intermediate hydronium ion (H(3)O(+)) is expected. The free energy difference of 11.7 kcal/mol for the forward reaction is in good agreement with the experimental value (13.3 kcal/mol). For the reverse reaction (Asp(15)-COO(-) + H(2)O + [3Fe-4S](0)H(+) → Asp(15)-COOH + H(2)O + [3Fe-4S](0)), a larger barrier than for the forward reaction is correctly predicted, but it is quantitatively overestimated (23.1 kcal/mol from simulations versus 14.1 from experiment). Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed. Compared with the water-assisted process (ΔE ≈ 10 kcal/mol), water-unassisted proton transfer yields a considerably higher barrier of ΔE ≈ 35 kcal/mol.

Proton transfer through the water gossamer.

Project description:The diffusion of protons through water is understood within the framework of the Grotthuss mechanism, which requires that they undergo structural diffusion in a stepwise manner throughout the water network. Despite long study, this picture oversimplifies and neglects the complexity of the supramolecular structure of water. We use first-principles simulations and demonstrate that the currently accepted picture of proton diffusion is in need of revision. We show that proton and hydroxide diffusion occurs through periods of intense activity involving concerted proton hopping followed by periods of rest. The picture that emerges is that proton transfer is a multiscale and multidynamical process involving a broader distribution of pathways and timescales than currently assumed. To rationalize these phenomena, we look at the 3D water network as a distribution of closed directed rings, which reveals the presence of medium-range directional correlations in the liquid. One of the natural consequences of this feature is that both the hydronium and hydroxide ion are decorated with proton wires. These wires serve as conduits for long proton jumps over several hydrogen bonds.

Real Time Tracking of Nanoconfined Water-Assisted Ion Transfer in Functionalized Graphene Derivatives Supercapacitor Electrodes.

Project description:Water molecules confined in nanoscale spaces of 2D graphene layers have fascinated researchers worldwide for the past several years, especially in the context of energy storage applications. The water molecules exchanged along with ions during the electrochemical process can aid in wetting and stabilizing the layered materials resulting in an anomalous enhancement in the performance of supercapacitor electrodes. Engineering of 2D carbon electrode materials with various functionalities (oxygen (─O), fluorine (─F), nitrile (─C≡N), carboxylic (─COOH), carbonyl (─C═O), nitrogen (─N)) can alter the ion/water organization in graphene derivatives, and eventually their inherent ion storage ability. Thus, in the current study, a comparative set of functionalized graphene derivatives-fluorine-doped cyanographene (G-F-CN), cyanographene (G-CN), graphene acid (G-COOH), oxidized graphene acid (G-COOH (O)) and nitrogen superdoped graphene (G-N) is systematically evaluated toward charge storage in various aqueous-based electrolyte systems. Differences in functionalization on graphene derivatives influence the electrochemical properties, and the real-time mass exchange during the electrochemical process is monitored by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). Electrogravimetric assessment revealed that oxidized 2D acid derivatives (G-COOH (O)) are shown to exhibit high ion storage performance along with maximum water transfer during the electrochemical process. The complex understanding of the processes gained during supercapacitor electrode charging in aqueous electrolytes paves the way toward the rational utilization of graphene derivatives in forefront energy storage applications.

Wettability effect on nanoconfined water flow.

Project description:Understanding and controlling the flow of water confined in nanopores has tremendous implications in theoretical studies and industrial applications. Here, we propose a simple model for the confined water flow based on the concept of effective slip, which is a linear sum of true slip, depending on a contact angle, and apparent slip, caused by a spatial variation of the confined water viscosity as a function of wettability as well as the nanopore dimension. Results from this model show that the flow capacity of confined water is 10-1∼107 times that calculated by the no-slip Hagen-Poiseuille equation for nanopores with various contact angles and dimensions, in agreement with the majority of 53 different study cases from the literature. This work further sheds light on a controversy over an increase or decrease in flow capacity from molecular dynamics simulations and experiments.

Water-Gated Proton Transfer Dynamics in Respiratory Complex I.

Project description:The respiratory complex I transduces redox energy into an electrochemical proton gradient in aerobic respiratory chains, powering energy-requiring processes in the cell. However, despite recently resolved molecular structures, the mechanism of this gigantic enzyme remains poorly understood. By combining large-scale quantum and classical simulations with site-directed mutagenesis and biophysical experiments, we show here how the conformational state of buried ion-pairs and water molecules control the protonation dynamics in the membrane domain of complex I and establish evolutionary conserved long-range coupling elements. We suggest that an electrostatic wave propagates in forward and reverse directions across the 200 Å long membrane domain during enzyme turnover, without significant dissipation of energy. Our findings demonstrate molecular principles that enable efficient long-range proton-electron coupling (PCET) and how perturbation of this PCET machinery may lead to development of mitochondrial disease.

Water molecule switching heterogeneous proton-coupled electron transfer pathway.

Project description:Figuring out the specific pathway of semiconductor-mediated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) driven by light is essential to solar energy conversion systems. In this work, we reveal that the amount of adsorbed water molecules determines the photo-induced PCET pathway on the TiO2 surface through systematic kinetic solvent isotope effect (KSIE) experiments. At low water content (<1.7 wt%), the photo-induced single-proton/single-electron transfer on TiO2 nanoparticles follows a stepwise PT/ET pathway with the formation of high-energy H+/D+-O[double bond, length as m-dash]C or H+/D+-O-C intermediates, resulting in an inverse KSIE (H/D) ∼0.5 with t Bu3ArO· and KSIE (H/D) ∼1 with TEMPO in methanol-d 0/d 4 systems. However, at high water content (>2 wt%), the PCET reaction follows a concerted pathway with a lower energy barrier, leading to normal KSIEs (H/D) ≥ 2 with both reagents. In situ ATR-FTIR observation and DFT calculations suggest that water molecules' existence significantly lowers the proton/electron transfer energy barrier, which coincides with our experimental observations.

Alternating electron and proton transfer steps in photosynthetic water oxidation.

Project description:Water oxidation by cyanobacteria, algae, and plants is pivotal in oxygenic photosynthesis, the process that powers life on Earth, and is the paradigm for engineering solar fuel-production systems. Each complete reaction cycle of photosynthetic water oxidation requires the removal of four electrons and four protons from the catalytic site, a manganese-calcium complex and its protein environment in photosystem II. In time-resolved photothermal beam deflection experiments, we monitored apparent volume changes of the photosystem II protein associated with charge creation by light-induced electron transfer (contraction) and charge-compensating proton relocation (expansion). Two previously invisible proton removal steps were detected, thereby filling two gaps in the basic reaction-cycle model of photosynthetic water oxidation. In the S(2) ? S(3) transition of the classical S-state cycle, an intermediate is formed by deprotonation clearly before electron transfer to the oxidant (Y Z OX). The rate-determining elementary step (?, approximately 30 µs at 20?°C) in the long-distance proton relocation toward the protein-water interface is characterized by a high activation energy (E(a) = 0.46 ± 0.05 eV) and strong H/D kinetic isotope effect (approximately 6). The characteristics of a proton transfer step during the S(0) ? S(1) transition are similar (?, approximately 100 µs; E(a) = 0.34 ± 0.08 eV; kinetic isotope effect, approximately 3); however, the proton removal from the Mn complex proceeds after electron transfer to . By discovery of the transient formation of two further intermediate states in the reaction cycle of photosynthetic water oxidation, a temporal sequence of strictly alternating removal of electrons and protons from the catalytic site is established.

Competition between proton transfer and intermolecular Coulombic decay in water.

Project description:Intermolecular Coulombic decay (ICD) is a ubiquitous relaxation channel of electronically excited states in weakly bound systems, ranging from dimers to liquids. As it is driven by electron correlation, it was assumed that it will dominate over more established energy loss mechanisms, for example fluorescence. Here, we use electron-electron coincidence spectroscopy to determine the efficiency of the ICD process after 2a1 ionization in water clusters. We show that this efficiency is surprisingly low for small water clusters and that it gradually increases to 40-50% for clusters with hundreds of water units. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that proton transfer between neighboring water molecules proceeds on the same timescale as ICD and leads to a configuration in which the ICD channel is closed. This conclusion is further supported by experimental results from deuterated water. Combining experiment and theory, we infer an intrinsic ICD lifetime of 12-52 fs for small water clusters.
