Guanidinium 5,5'-Azotetrazolate: A Colorful Chameleon for Halogen-Free Smoke Signals.

ABSTRACT: A progressive halogen-free multicolored smoke system to obtain white, red, violet, yellow, green, and blue smoke color is presented. The nitrogen-rich salt guanidinium 5,5'-azotetrazolate (GZT), which is usually applied as a gas generator or propellant ingredient, was combined with different smoke dyes (Solvent Red 1, Solvent Violet 47, Solvent Green 3, Solvent Yellow 33). These two-component smoke mixtures offer a convenient and safe multicolor approach without the need for potassium chlorate or any other hazardous material. The common smoke characteristics with respect to burn time/burn rate, yield factor, transfer rate, as well as energetic properties were determined and compared with classic chlorate-based formulations currently used. To the best of our knowledge, nothing comparable is known in the literature and a completely new research area in modern pyrotechnics is opened.

Halogen-free guanidinium-based perovskite solar cell with enhanced stability.

Project description:Herein, we report a new halogen-free and excellent stable perovskite, GAPb(SCN)3, which was prepared from the symmetric guanidinium cation (GA+) with nearly zero dipole moment, and pseudohalogen (SCN-), for the fabrication of stable perovskite solar cells. GAPb(SCN)3 exhibits an orthorhombic crystal phase, with optical band gap of 1.43 eV. The orthorhombic crystal phase shifted to a cubic phase, due to the formation of PbS beyond 150 °C. GAPb(SCN)3 itself showed excellent stability upon being exposed to ambient conditions for 30 days, without degradation of its optical or crystallographic properties. This superior stability could be attributable to the strong electrostatic interaction between SCN- and Pb2+, and hydrogen bonding between SCN- and GA+. Even though it has a suitable band gap, it exhibited a significantly lower efficiency of ca. 0.11%. The very low performance could be attributable to the significantly low light absorption coefficient, and large non-radiative recombination of photo-induced charges via an oxidized form of S at the TiO2/perovskite interface.

Avian learning favors colorful, not bright, signals.

Project description:A few colors, such as red and yellow, are commonly found in aposematic (warning) signaling across taxa, independent of evolutionary relationships. These colors have unique traits (i.e., hue, brightness) that aid in their differentiation, and perhaps, their effectiveness in promoting avoidance learning. This repeated use calls into question the influence of selection on specific warning colors adopted by aposematic prey-predator systems. To disentangle the influence of color characteristics on this process, we trained week-old chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) to learn to avoid distasteful food that was associated with one of three color signals (yellow, white, red) that varied in both hue and in brightness in order to assess which of these traits most influenced their ability to learn avoidance. Our results show that while chicks learned to avoid all three colors, avoidance was based on the hue, not brightness of the different signals. We found that yellow was the most effective for avoidance learning, followed by red, and finally white. Our results suggest that while these three colors are commonly used in aposematic signaling, predators' ability to learn avoidance differs among them. These results may explain why yellow is among the most common signals across aposematic taxa.

Mercury-Free Automated Synthesis of Guanidinium Backbone Oligonucleotides.

Project description:A new method for synthesizing deoxynucleic guanidine (DNG) oligonucleotides that uses iodine as a mild and inexpensive coupling reagent is reported. This method eliminates the need for the toxic mercury salts and pungent thiophenol historically used in methods aimed at preparing DNG oligonucleotides. This coupling strategy was readily translated to a standard MerMade 12 oligonucleotide synthesizer with coupling yields of 95% and has enabled the synthesis of a 20-mer DNG oligonucleotide, the longest DNG strand to date, in addition to mixed DNA-DNG sequences with 3-9 DNG inserts. Importantly, DNG oligonucleotides exhibit robust unaided cellular uptake as compared to unmodified oligonucleotides without apparent cellular toxicity. Taken together, these findings should greatly increase the accessibility of cationic backbone modifications and assist in the development of oligonucleotide-based drugs.

Visual "playback" of colorful signals in the field supports sensory drive for signal detectability.

Project description:Colorful visual signals are important systems for investigating the effects of signaling environments and receiver physiology on signal evolution as predicted by the sensory drive hypothesis. Support for the sensory drive hypothesis on color signal evolution is mostly based on documenting correlations between the properties of signals and habitat conditions under which the signals are given (i.e., a correlational approach) and less commonly on the use of mathematical models that integrate representations of visual environments, signal properties, and sensory systems (i.e., a functional approach). Here, we used an experimental approach in the field to evaluate signal efficacy of colorful lizard throat fans called dewlaps that show geographic variation in the lizard Anolis cristatellus. We used a remote controlled apparatus to display "fake dewlaps" to wild lizards to test for adaptive divergence in dewlap brightness (i.e., perceived intensity) among populations in situ. We found evidence of local adaptation in dewlap brightness consistent with the sensory drive hypothesis. Specifically, dewlaps that had the brightness characteristics of local lizards were more likely to be detected than those with the brightness characteristics of non-local lizards. Our findings indicate that simplified mathematical representations of visual environments may allow robust estimates of relative detectability or conspicuousness in natural habitats. We have shown the feasibility of evaluating color signal efficacy experimentally under natural conditions and demonstrate the potential advantages of presenting isolated components of signals to an intended receiver to measure their contribution to signal function.

Colorful drying.

Project description:Drying is one of the standard unit operations in the pharmaceutical industry and it is important to become aware of the circumstances that dominate during the process. The purpose of this study was to test microcapsulated thermochromic pigments as heat indicators in a fluid bed drying process. The indicator powders were manually granulated with alpha-lactose monohydrate resulting in three particle-size groups. Also, pellets were coated with the indicator powders. The granules and pellets were fluidized in fluid bed dryer to observe the progress of the heat flow in the material and to study the heat indicator properties of the indicator materials. A tristimulus colorimeter was used to measure CIELAB color values. Color indicator for heat detection can be utilized to test if the heat-sensitive API would go through physical changes during the pharmaceutical drying process. Both the prepared granules and pellets can be used as heat indicator in fluid bed drying process. The colored heat indicators give an opportunity to learn new aspects of the process at real time and could be exploded, for example, for scaling-up studies.

Increases in Secondhand Smoke After Going Smoke-Free: An Assessment of the Impact of a Mandated Smoke-Free Housing Policy.

Project description:ObjectiveThe 12-month impact of federally mandated smoke-free housing (SFH) policy adoption (July 2018) was assessed using two markers of ambient secondhand smoke (SHS): airborne nicotine and particulate matter at the 2.5-micrometer threshold (PM2.5).MethodsWe measured markers of SHS in Norfolk, VA from December 2017 to December 2018 in six federally subsidized multi-unit public housing buildings. Multi-level regression was used to model the following comparisons: (1) the month immediately before SFH implementation versus the month immediately after, and (2) December 2017 versus December 2018.ResultsThere was a 27% reduction in indoor PM2.5 and a 32% reduction in airborne nicotine in the first month after SFH adoption, compared to the month prior to adoption. However, there was a 33% increase in PM2.5 and a 25% increase in airborne nicotine after 12 months.ConclusionsUS Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD)-mandated SFH can reduce SHS in multi-unit housing. However, SFH could also plausibly increase indoor smoking. Policy approaches adopted by individual properties or housing authorities-for example, property-wide bans versus allowing designated smoking areas-could be driving this potential unintended consequence.ImplicationsSuccessful implementation of SFH by public housing authorities in response to the HUD rule requires ongoing attention to implementation strategies. In this sense, SFH likely differs from other policies that might be seen as less intrusive. Long-term success of SFH will depend on careful policy implementation, including plans to educate and support housing authority staff, inform and engage residents, and build effective partnerships with community agencies.

The right to smoke and the right to smoke-free surroundings: international comparison of smoke-free psychiatric clinic implementation experiences.

Project description:BackgroundIn Scandinavia, people with a severe mental disorder have a reduced life expectancy of 15-20 years compared with the general public. Smoking is a major contributor, and smoke-free policies are increasingly adopted in psychiatric clinics around the world. We compared potential facilitators and barriers among staff and management, for the implementation of smoke-free psychiatric clinics.AimsTo investigate the attitudes and experiences regarding smoke-free policies among managers and staff involved in the implementation processes of smoke-free psychiatric clinics at hospitals in Malmö (Sweden) and Barcelona (Spain).MethodWe used a qualitative methodology, with 15 semi-structured interviews. The interviews were conducted with each participant individually, and were subsequently transcribed. The data were analysed with systematic text condensation.ResultsThere were notable differences in how the smoke-free policies were carried out and experienced, and attitudes regarding the policy changes differed in the two settings. Key differences were the views on the right to smoke in compulsory care and to stay in smoke-free surroundings supported by smoking cessation intervention; the prioritisation of staff facilitation of smoking breaks; and views on smoking and smoke-free psychiatry. In contrast, participants agreed on the importance of staff education and management support. A smoking ban by law and belonging to a network of smoke-free hospitals were also relevant.ConclusionsStaff education, and support from staff and management for the patients' right to stay in smoke-free surroundings, facilitated successful implementation of smoke-free policies in the psychiatric clinics, whereas supporting the right to smoke was a barrier.

Subnational smoke-free laws in China.

Project description:INTRODUCTION:Implementing comprehensive smoke-free laws is an important part of tobacco control and has been promoted since China ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in 2005. This study shows the predictors of adopting subnational smoke-free laws and their alignment with Article 8 of WHO FCTC. METHODS:The legislations of 125 cities from China's top three city grades were assessed, covering the cities that have smoke-free laws. Logistic regression is applied to evaluate the characteristics of cities that adopted a smoke-free law. We also compare each smoke-free law with the WHO FCTC Article 8 requirements. RESULTS:Provincial capital cities were more likely to adopt smoke-free laws compared with other cities. Smoke-free laws vary from comprehensive to partial bans with major exemptions. Among the 21 cities that have enacted smoke-free laws, 9 cities prohibited smoking in all indoor workplaces, indoor public places (restaurants, bars, health facilities, government buildings and schools) and public transportation. More than half of the smoke-free laws still allow designated indoor smoking rooms. Smoke-free laws that clearly ban e-cigarettes in smoke-free areas have been implemented in only two cities (Nanning and Hangzhou). CONCLUSIONS:This study shows that a number of Chinese cities have taken legislative measures to protect people from exposure to tobacco smoke. It identifies signs of progress but also areas for improvement, such as the scope of smoke-free laws, imperfect implementation of such laws, and the potential omission of e-cigarettes from the legislation.

Smoke-free prisons in England: indoor air quality before and after implementation of a comprehensive smoke-free policy.

Project description:ObjectivesHigh levels of particulate pollution due to secondhand smoke (SHS) have previously been recorded in English prisons. As part of an evaluation to ascertain whether a new comprehensive smoke-free policy introduced in the first four prisons in England was successfully implemented, this study compares indoor air quality on prison wing landing locations three months before and three months after going smoke-free.DesignAn indoor air quality monitoring study, comparing SHS levels before and after a comprehensive smoke-free prison policy.SettingThe first four prisons in England to implement a comprehensive smoke-free policy.Primary and secondary measuresWe compared concentrations of airborne particulate matter <2.5 microns in diameter (PM₂.₅), as a marker for SHS, on wing landing locations three months before and three months after the smoke-free policy was implemented. Static battery operated aerosol monitors were used to sample concentrations of PM₂.₅ on wing landings.ResultsAfter discarding data from monitors that had been tampered with we were able to analyse paired data across four prisons from 74 locations, across 29 wing landing locations, for an average sampling time of five hours and eight minutes. When comparing samples taken three months before with the paired samples taken three months after policy implementation (paired for prison, day of the week, time of day, wing location and position of monitor), there was a 66% reduction in mean PM₂.₅ concentrations across the four prisons sampled, from 39 to 13 µg/m³ (difference 26 µg/m³, 95% CI 25 to 26 µg/m³).ConclusionPrison smoke-free policies achieve significant improvements in indoor air quality. A national smoke-free policy would therefore be an effective means of protecting prisoners and staff from harm due to SHS exposure in the prison environment.

Time-Dependent DNA Origami Denaturation by Guanidinium Chloride, Guanidinium Sulfate, and Guanidinium Thiocyanate.

Project description:Guanidinium (Gdm) undergoes interactions with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups and, thus, is a highly potent denaturant of biomolecular structure. However, our molecular understanding of the interaction of Gdm with proteins and DNA is still rather limited. Here, we investigated the denaturation of DNA origami nanostructures by three Gdm salts, i.e., guanidinium chloride (GdmCl), guanidinium sulfate (Gdm2SO4), and guanidinium thiocyanate (GdmSCN), at different temperatures and in dependence of incubation time. Using DNA origami nanostructures as sensors that translate small molecular transitions into nanostructural changes, the denaturing effects of the Gdm salts were directly visualized by atomic force microscopy. GdmSCN was the most potent DNA denaturant, which caused complete DNA origami denaturation at 50 °C already at a concentration of 2 M. Under such harsh conditions, denaturation occurred within the first 15 min of Gdm exposure, whereas much slower kinetics were observed for the more weakly denaturing salt Gdm2SO4 at 25 °C. Lastly, we observed a novel non-monotonous temperature dependence of DNA origami denaturation in Gdm2SO4 with the fraction of intact nanostructures having an intermediate minimum at about 40 °C. Our results, thus, provide further insights into the highly complex Gdm-DNA interaction and underscore the importance of the counteranion species.
