Magnesium-Based Metasurfaces for Dual-Function Switching between Dynamic Holography and Dynamic Color Display.

ABSTRACT: Metasurface-based color display and holography have greatly advanced the state of the art display technologies. To further enrich the metasurface functionalities, recently a lot of research endeavors have been made to combine these two display functions within a single device. However, so far such metasurfaces have remained static and lack tunability once the devices are fabricated. In this work, we demonstrate a dynamic dual-function metasurface device at visible frequencies. It allows for switching between dynamic holography and dynamic color display, taking advantage of the reversible phase transition of magnesium through hydrogenation and dehydrogenation. Spatially arranged stepwise nanocavity pixels are employed to accurately control the amplitude and phase of light, enabling the generation of high-quality color prints and holograms. Our work represents a paradigm toward compact and multifunctional optical elements for future display technologies.

Addressable metasurfaces for dynamic holography and optical information encryption.

Project description:Metasurfaces enable manipulation of light propagation at an unprecedented level, benefitting from a number of merits unavailable to conventional optical elements, such as ultracompactness, precise phase and polarization control at deep subwavelength scale, and multifunctionalities. Recent progress in this field has witnessed a plethora of functional metasurfaces, ranging from lenses and vortex beam generation to holography. However, research endeavors have been mainly devoted to static devices, exploiting only a glimpse of opportunities that metasurfaces can offer. We demonstrate a dynamic metasurface platform, which allows independent manipulation of addressable subwavelength pixels at visible frequencies through controlled chemical reactions. In particular, we create dynamic metasurface holograms for advanced optical information processing and encryption. Plasmonic nanorods tailored to exhibit hierarchical reaction kinetics upon hydrogenation/dehydrogenation constitute addressable pixels in multiplexed metasurfaces. The helicity of light, hydrogen, oxygen, and reaction duration serve as multiple keys to encrypt the metasurfaces. One single metasurface can be deciphered into manifold messages with customized keys, featuring a compact data storage scheme as well as a high level of information security. Our work suggests a novel route to protect and transmit classified data, where highly restricted access of information is imposed.

Simultaneous Full-Color Printing and Holography Enabled by Centimeter-Scale Plasmonic Metasurfaces.

Project description:Optical metasurfaces enable novel ways to locally manipulate light's amplitude, phase, and polarization, underpinning a newly viable technology for applications, such as high-density optical storage, holography, and displays. Here, a high-security-level platform enabled by centimeter-scale plasmonic metasurfaces with full-color, high-purity, and enhanced-information-capacity properties is proposed. Multiple types of independent information can be embedded into a single metamark using full parameters of light, including amplitude, phase, and polarization. Under incoherent white light, the metamark appears as a polarization- and angle-encoded full-color image with flexibly controlled hue, saturation, and brightness, while switching to multiwavelength holograms under coherent laser illumination. More importantly, for actual applications, the extremely shallow functional layer makes such centimeter-scale plasmonic metamarks suitable for cost-effective mass production processes. Considering these superior performances of the presented multifunctional plasmonic metasurfaces, this work may find wide applications in anticounterfeiting, information security, high-density optical storage, and so forth.

Simultaneous Spectral and Spatial Modulation for Color Printing and Holography Using All-Dielectric Metasurfaces.

Project description:Metasurfaces possess the outstanding ability to tailor phase, amplitude, and even spectral responses of light with an unprecedented ultrahigh resolution and thus have attracted significant interest. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel meta-device that integrates color printing and computer-generated holograms within a single-layer dielectric metasurface by modulating spectral and spatial responses at subwavelength scale, simultaneously. In our design, such metasurface appears as a microscopic color image under white light illumination, while encrypting two different holographic images that can be projected at the far-field when illuminated with red and green laser beams. We choose amorphous silicon dimers and nanofins as building components and use a modified parallel Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm to obtain multiple subholograms with arbitrary spatial shapes for image-indexed arrangements while avoiding the loss of phase information. Such a method can further extend the design freedom of metasurfaces. By exploiting spectral and spatial control at the level of individual pixels, multiple sets of independent information can be introduced into a single-layer device; the additional complexity and enlarged information capacity are promising for novel applications such as information security and anticounterfeiting.

Phase-change perovskite metasurfaces for dynamic color tuning.

Project description:Halide perovskite metasurfaces are attracting increasing interest for applications in light-emitting and display technologies. To access the wide range of colors required for these applications, the main mechanism exploited thus far has been chemical engineering of the perovskite compounds - this constitutes a significant limitation for the dynamic switching of optical response desirable in actual devices. Here we demonstrate polarization-dependent, dynamic control of structural color and emission wavelength in an all-dielectric phase-change halide perovskite nanograting metasurface, by temperature tuning. This is underpinned by the significant change in the perovskite optical constants which accompanies its phase-transition around room temperature. The functionalities demonstrated in our work bearing potential for applications in light-emitting devices, displays and spatial-light-modulators.

Nonlinear vectorial holography with quad-atom metasurfaces.

Project description:Vectorial optical holography represents a solution to control the polarization and amplitude distribution of light in the Fourier space. While vectorial optical holography has been experimentally demonstrated in the linear optical regime, its nonlinear counterpart, which can provide extra degrees of freedom of light-field manipulation through the frequency conversion processes, remains unexplored. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the nonlinear vectorial holography through the second harmonic generation process on a quad-atom plasmonic metasurface. The quad-atom metasurface consists of gold meta-atoms with threefold rotational symmetry. Based on the concept of nonlinear geometric phase, we can simultaneously manipulate the phase and amplitude of the left and right circularly polarized second harmonic waves generated from the quad-atom metasurface. By superposing the two orthogonal polarization components, the quad-atom metasurface can produce nonlinear holographic images with vectorial polarization distributions. The proposed metasurface platform may have important applications in vectorial polarization nonlinear optical source, high-capacity optical information storage, and optical encryption.

3D-Integrated metasurfaces for full-colour holography.

Project description:Metasurfaces enable the design of optical elements by engineering the wavefront of light at the subwavelength scale. Due to their ultrathin and compact characteristics, metasurfaces possess great potential to integrate multiple functions in optoelectronic systems for optical device miniaturisation. However, current research based on multiplexing in the 2D plane has not fully utilised the capabilities of metasurfaces for multi-tasking applications. Here, we demonstrate a 3D-integrated metasurface device by stacking a hologram metasurface on a monolithic Fabry-Pérot cavity-based colour filter microarray to simultaneously achieve low-crosstalk, polarisation-independent, high-efficiency, full-colour holography, and microprint. The dual functions of the device outline a novel scheme for data recording, security encryption, colour displays, and information processing. Our 3D integration concept can be extended to achieve multi-tasking flat optical systems by including a variety of functional metasurface layers, such as polarizers, metalenses, and others.

Incoherent color holography lattice light-sheet for subcellular imaging of dynamic structures.

Project description:The purpose of the article is to explore the need and advantages of using the incoherent color holography lattice light-sheet (ICHLLS) to provide multiwavelength quantitative monitoring of 3D cellular dynamics in live tissue to further understand complex functions of cells and cellular compartments. We have explored the use of incoherent color holography lattice light-sheet to investigate colocalization of fluorescent markers in live cells in intact tissue. Neuronal structures provide an attractive target for incoherent color holography lattice light-sheet. The cells show a complex architecture in 3D space in which signaling both between cells and within subcellular structures requires colocalization of proteins and lipids to function. During activity and over long periods it is important in understanding these signaling functions in Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and motoneuron diseases within live cells in intact tissue. As a proof of concept this article recalls the key aspects in lattice light-sheet imaging and provides a description of the incoherent detection system configuration to actively control dual diffractive lenses phase-shifting at multiple excitation wavelengths sequentially, and per each z-galvo scanning level, with extended field-of-view. The incoherent color holography lattice light-sheet system will allow simultaneous recording of multidimensional object waves that contain intensity in 3D space, phase, and wavelength information. We measure colocalization of fluorescence indicators introduced into live cells in intact neural tissue.

Lithium-plasmon-based low-powered dynamic color display.

Project description:Display and power supply have been two essential and independent cornerstones of modern electronics. Here, we report a lithium-plasmon-based low-powered dynamic color display with intrinsic dual functionality (plasmonic display and energy recycling unit) which is a result of the electric-field-driven transformation of nanostructured lithium metals. Dynamic color displays are enabled by plasmonic transformation through electrodeposition (electrostripping) of lithium metals during the charging (discharging) process, while the consumed energy for coloring can be retrieved in the inverse process respectively. Energy recycling of lithium metals brings energy consumption down to 0.390 mW cm-2 (0.105 mW cm-2) for the active (static) coloration state of a proof-of-concept display/battery device, which approaches nearly-zero-energy-consumption in the near-100%-energy-efficiency limit of commercial lithium batteries. Combining the subwavelength feature of plasmonics with effective energy recycling, the lithium-plasmon-based dynamic display offers a promising route towards next-generation integrated photonic devices, with the intriguing advantages of low energy consumption, a small footprint and high resolution.

All-optical active THz metasurfaces for ultrafast polarization switching and dynamic beam splitting.

Project description:Miniaturized ultrafast switchable optical components with an extremely compact size and a high-speed response will be the core of next-generation all-optical devices instead of traditional integrated circuits, which are approaching the bottleneck of Moore's Law. Metasurfaces have emerged as fascinating subwavelength flat optical components and devices for light focusing and holography applications. However, these devices exhibit a severe limitation due to their natural passive response. Here we introduce an active hybrid metasurface integrated with patterned semiconductor inclusions for all-optical active control of terahertz waves. Ultrafast modulation of polarization states and the beam splitting ratio are experimentally demonstrated on a time scale of 667 ps. This scheme of hybrid metasurfaces could also be extended to the design of various free-space all-optical active devices, such as varifocal planar lenses, switchable vector beam generators, and components for holography in ultrafast imaging, display, and high-fidelity terahertz wireless communication systems.

Multiple channelling single-photon emission with scattering holography designed metasurfaces.

Project description:Channelling single-photon emission in multiple well-defined directions and simultaneously controlling its polarization characteristics is highly desirable for numerous quantum technology applications. We show that this can be achieved by using quantum emitters (QEs) nonradiatively coupled to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are scattered into outgoing free-propagating waves by appropriately designed metasurfaces. The QE-coupled metasurface design is based on the scattering holography approach with radially diverging SPPs as reference waves. Using holographic metasurfaces fabricated around nanodiamonds with single Ge vacancy centres, we experimentally demonstrate on-chip integrated efficient generation of two well-collimated single-photon beams propagating along different 15° off-normal directions with orthogonal linear polarizations.
