Focusing on Mouth Movement to Improve Genuine Smile Recognition.

ABSTRACT: Smiles are the most commonly and frequently used facial expressions by human beings. Some scholars claimed that the low accuracy in recognizing genuine smiles is explained by the perceptual-attentional hypothesis, meaning that observers either did not pay attention to responsible cues or were unable to recognize these cues (usually the Duchenne marker or AU6 displaying as contraction of muscles in eye regions). We investigated whether training (instructing participants to pay attention either to the Duchenne mark or to mouth movement) might help improve the recognition of genuine smiles, including accuracy and confidence. Results indicated that attention to mouth movement improves these people's ability to distinguish between genuine and posed smiles, with nullification of the alternative explanations such as sample distribution and intensity of lip pulling (AU12). The generalization of the conclusion requires further investigations. This study further argues that the perceptual-attentional hypothesis can explain smile genuineness recognition.

Project description:The filamentous bacteriophage are highly immunogenic particles that can be used as carrier proteins for peptides and presumably other haptens and antigens. Our previous work demonstrated that the antibody response was better focused against a synthetic peptide if it was conjugated to phage as compared to the classical carrier, ovalbumin. We speculated that this was due, in part, to the relatively low surface complexity of the phage. Here, we further investigate the phage as an immunogenic carrier, and the effect reducing its surface complexity has on the antibody response against peptides that are either displayed as recombinant fusions to the phage coat or are chemically conjugated to it. Immunodominant regions of the minor coat protein, pIII, were removed from the phage surface by excising its N1 and N2 domains (Delta3 phage variant), whereas immunodominant epitopes of the major coat protein, pVIII, were altered by reducing the charge of its surface-exposed N-terminal residues (Delta8 phage variant). Immunization of mice revealed that the Delta3 variant was less immunogenic than wild-type (WT) phage, whereas the Delta8 variant was more immunogenic. The immunogenicity of two different peptides was tested in the context of the WT and Delta3 phage in two different forms: (i) as recombinant peptides fused to pVIII, and (ii) as synthetic peptides conjugated to the phage surface. One peptide (MD10) in its recombinant form produced a stronger anti-peptide antibody response fused to the WT carrier compared to the Delta3 phage carrier, and did not elicit a detectable anti-peptide response in its synthetic form conjugated to either phage carrier. This trend was reversed for a different peptide (4E10(L)), which did not produce a detectable anti-peptide antibody response as a recombinant fusion; yet, as a chemical conjugate to Delta3 phage, but not WT phage, it elicited a highly focused anti-peptide antibody response that exceeded the anti-carrier response by approximately 65-fold. The results suggest that focusing of the antibody response against synthetic peptides can be improved by decreasing the antigenic complexity of the phage surface.

Project description:OBJECTIVES:The standard, monopolar (MP) electrode configuration used in commercially available cochlear implants (CI) creates a broad electrical field, which can lead to unwanted channel interactions. Use of more focused configurations, such as tripolar and phased array, has led to mixed results for improving speech understanding. The purpose of the present study was to assess the efficacy of a physiologically inspired configuration called dynamic focusing, using focused tripolar stimulation at low levels and less focused stimulation at high levels. Dynamic focusing may better mimic cochlear excitation patterns in normal acoustic hearing, while reducing the current levels necessary to achieve sufficient loudness at high levels. DESIGN:Twenty postlingually deafened adult CI users participated in the study. Speech perception was assessed in quiet and in a four-talker babble background noise. Speech stimuli were closed-set spondees in noise, and medial vowels at 50 and 60 dB SPL in quiet and in noise. The signal to noise ratio was adjusted individually such that performance was between 40 and 60% correct with the MP strategy. Subjects were fitted with three experimental strategies matched for pulse duration, pulse rate, filter settings, and loudness on a channel-by-channel basis. The strategies included 14 channels programmed in MP, fixed partial tripolar (? = 0.8), and dynamic partial tripolar (? at 0.8 at threshold and 0.5 at the most comfortable level). Fifteen minutes of listening experience was provided with each strategy before testing. Sound quality ratings were also obtained. RESULTS:Speech perception performance for vowel identification in quiet at 50 and 60 dB SPL and for spondees in noise was similar for the three tested strategies. However, performance on vowel identification in noise was significantly better for listeners using the dynamic focusing strategy. Sound quality ratings were similar for the three strategies. Some subjects obtained more benefit than others, with some individual differences explained by the relation between loudness growth and the rate of change from focused to broader stimulation. CONCLUSIONS:These initial results suggest that further exploration of dynamic focusing is warranted. Specifically, optimizing such strategies on an individual basis may lead to improvements in speech perception for more adult listeners and improve how CIs are tailored. Some listeners may also need a longer period of time to acclimate to a new program.
