Cellulose beads were successfully prepared from waste denim using a dissolution-regeneration approach with ionic liquids as the dissolving solvent. Project description:The development of controlled drug delivery systems based on bio-renewable materials is an emerging strategy. In this work, a controlled drug delivery system based on mesoporous oxidized cellulose beads (OCBs) was successfully developed by a facile and green method. The introduction of the carboxyl groups mediated by the TEMPO(2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyradical)/NaClO/NaClO2 system presents the pH-responsive ability to cellulose beads, which can retain the drug in beads at pH = 1.2 and release at pH = 7.0. The release rate can be controlled by simply adjusting the degree of oxidation to achieve drug release at different locations and periods. A higher degree of oxidation corresponds to a faster release rate, which is attributed to a higher degree of re-swelling and higher hydrophilicity of OCBs. The zero-order release kinetics of the model drugs from the OCBs suggested a constant drug release rate, which is conducive to maintaining blood drug concentration, reducing side effects and administration frequency. At the same time, the effects of different model drugs and different drug-loading solvents on the release behavior and the physical state of the drugs loaded in the beads were studied. In summary, the pH-responsive oxidized cellulose beads with good biocompatibility, low cost, and adjustable release rate have shown great potential in the field of controlled drug release.

Project description:Cellulose beads emerge as carriers for poorly water-soluble drugs due to their eco-friendly raw materials and favorable porous structure. However, drug dissolution may be limited by their poor swelling ability and the presence of closed pores caused by shrinkage of the pristine cellulose beads. In this study, novel cellulose beads that can swell in acidic environment were prepared by introducing ethylenediamine (EDA) on dialdehyde cellulose (DAC), thereby addressing the shrinkage and closed pore problem of cellulose beads. The effect of the ratio of EDA on the swelling behavior and amine content of beads was studied. Three model drugs with different physicochemical properties were selected to study the physical state of loaded drugs and their release behavior. According to the results of XRPD and DSC, indomethacin and itraconazole loaded in the beads were amorphous at a drug loading of 20%, but fenofibrate was partially crystalline. Both bead size and the ratio of amine groups influenced the release behavior of the model drugs. The in vitro dissolution results showed that the cationic beads greatly improved the solubility and dissolution rate of the drug compared with the crystalline drug. Beads with a small size and high ratio of EDA tend to achieve a better drug dissolution rate and cumulative release percentage. Physical stability studies of the itraconazole-loaded beads were also implemented under four different temperature/humidity conditions for up to two months. The results showed that crystallization only appeared after two months of storage at 40°/75% RH, and the drug maintained a non-crystalline state in the other three storage conditions (0 °C/0 %RH, 0 °C/32 %RH, 25 °C/32 %RH). In conclusion, the novel pH-responsive cationic cellulose beads show great potential as a carrier for improving the rate and extent of dissolution of poorly soluble drugs and maintaining supersaturation. Project description:The path to greater sustainability and the development of polymeric drug delivery systems requires innovative approaches. The adaptation and use of biobased materials for applications such as targeted therapeutic delivery is, therefore, in high demand. A crucial part of this relates to the development of porous and hollow structures that are biocompatible, pH-responsive, deliver active substances, and contribute to pain relief, wound healing, tissue regeneration, and so forth. In this study, we developed a facile single-step and water-based method for the fabrication of hollow spherical cellulose beads for targeted drug release in response to external pH stimuli. Through base-catalyzed deprotection, hydrophobic solid and spherical cellulose acetate beads are transformed into hydrophilic cellulose structures with a hollow interior (wall thickness: 150 μm and inner diameter: 650 μm) by a stepwise increment of temperature and treatment time. Besides the pH-responsive fluid uptake properties, the hollow cellulose structures exhibit a maximum encapsulation efficiency of 20-85% diclofenac (DCF), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, used commonly to treat pain and inflammatory diseases. The maximum amount of DCF released in vitro increased from 20 to 100% when the pH of the release medium increased from pH 1.2 to 7.4. As for the DCF release patterns and kinetic models at specific pH values, the release showed a diffusion- and swelling-controlled profile, effortlessly fine-tuned by external environmental pH stimuli. Overall, we show that the modified beads exhibit excellent characteristics for transport across the gastrointestinal tract and enhance the bioavailability of the drug. Their therapeutic efficacy and biocompatibility are also evident from the studies on human fibroblast cells. We anticipate that this platform could support and inspire the development of novel sustainable and effective polysaccharide-based delivery systems.

Project description:Activated carbon fibres with a tubular structure and exfoliated surface were produced utilizing cotton textile waste as the precursor. The synthesized carbon fibres were freeze dried resulting in a tubular structure and large pore size distribution. The absorption properties against various oils and organic solvents were accessed, these fibres showed some of the highest absorption capabilities reported for cellulose based carbons, in particular for olive oil, gasoline and chloroform.

Project description:The present study proposes a simple yet effective method of cellulose coating onto chitosan (CS) hydrogel beads and application thereof as drug carriers. The beads were coated with cellulose dissolved in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate, an ionic liquid (IL) via a one-pot one-step process. Water molecules present in the CS beads diffused outward upon contact with the cellulose-IL mixture and acted as an anti-solvent. This allowed the surface of the beads to be coated with the regenerated cellulose. The regenerated cellulose was characterized by FE-SEM, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. To test potential application of the cellulose-coated CS hydrogel beads as a drug carrier, verapamil hydrochloride (VRP), used as a model drug, was impregnated into the beads. When the VRP-impregnated beads were immersed in the simulated gastric fluid (pH 1.2), the VRP was released in an almost ideal linear pattern. This easily fabricated cellulose-coated CS beads showed the possibility for application as carriers for drug release control.

Project description:In this work, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were obtained from flax fibers by an acid hydrolysis assisted by sonochemistry in order to reduce reaction times. The cavitation inducted during hydrolysis resulted in CNC with uniform shapes, and thus further pretreatments into the cellulose are not required. The obtained CNC exhibited a homogeneous morphology and high crystallinity, as well as typical values for surface charge. Additionally, CNC membranes were developed from CNC solution to evaluation as a drug delivery system by the incorporation of a model drug. The drug delivery studies were carried out using chlorhexidine (CHX) as a drug and the antimicrobial efficiency of the CNC membrane loaded with CHX was examined against Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (S. Aureus). The release of CHX from the CNC membranes is determined by UV-Vis. The obtaining methodology of the membranes proved to be simple, and these early studies showed a potential use in antibiotic drug delivery systems due to the release kinetics and the satisfactory antimicrobial activity.

Project description:The emergence of "green" electronics is a response to the pressing global situation where conventional electronics contribute to resource depletion and a global build-up of waste. For wearable applications, green electronic textile (e-textile) materials present an opportunity to unobtrusively incorporate sensing, energy harvesting, and other functionality into the clothes we wear. Here, we demonstrate electrically conducting wood-based yarns produced by a roll-to-roll coating process with an ink based on the biocompatible polymer:polyelectrolyte complex poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The developed e-textile yarns display a, for cellulose yarns, record-high bulk conductivity of 36 Scm-1, which could be further increased to 181 Scm-1 by adding silver nanowires. The PEDOT:PSS-coated yarn could be machine washed at least five times without loss in conductivity. We demonstrate the electrochemical functionality of the yarn through incorporation into organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). Moreover, by using a household sewing machine, we have manufactured an out-of-plane thermoelectric textile device, which can produce 0.2 μW at a temperature gradient of 37 K.

Project description:Valorization of pineapple peel waste is an attractive research topic because of the huge quantities of this byproduct generated from pineapple processing industries. In this study, the extract from pineapple waste was collected to produce a hydrogel-like form containing bacterial cellulose fibers with a three-dimensional structure and nanoscale diameter by the Acetobacter xylinum fermentation process. The bacterial cellulose suspension was subsequently activated by freeze-drying, affording lightweight aerogels as potential adsorbents in wastewater treatment, in particular the adsorptive removal of organic dyes. Intensive tests were carried out with the adsorption of methylene blue, a typical cationic dye, to investigate the influence of adsorption conditions (temperature, pH, initial dye concentration, time, and experiment scale) and aerogel-preparation parameters (grinding time and bacterial cellulose concentration). The bacterial cellulose-based aerogels exhibited high adsorption capacity not only for methylene blue but also for other cationic dyes, including malachite green, rhodamine B, and crystal violet (28-49 mg/g). However, its activity was limited for most of the anionic dyes, such as methyl orange, sunset yellow, and quinoline yellow, due to the repulsion of these anionic dyes with the aerogel surface, except for the case of congo red. It is also an anionic dye but has two amine groups providing a strong interaction with the hydroxyl group of the aerogel via hydrogen bonding. Indeed, the aerogel has a substantially large congo red-trapping capacity of 101 mg/g. Notably, the adsorption process exhibited similar performances, upscaling the solution volume to 50 times. The utilization of abundant agricultural waste in the simple aerogel preparation to produce a highly efficient and biodegradable adsorbent is the highlight of this work.

Project description:Natural polymers provide a better alternative to synthetic polymers in the domain of drug delivery systems (DDSs) because of their renewability, biocompatibility, and low immunogenicity; therefore, they are being studied for the development of bulk/nanoformulations. Likewise, current methods for engineering natural polymers into micelles are in their infancy, and in-depth studies are required using natural polymers as controlled DDSs. Accordingly, in our present study, a new micellar DDS was synthesized using ethyl cellulose (EC) grafted with polyethylene glycol (PEG); it was characterized, its properties, cell toxicity, and hemocompatibility were evaluated, and its drug release kinetics were demonstrated using doxorubicin (DOX) as a model drug. Briefly, EC was grafted with PEG to form the amphiphilic copolymers EC-PEG1 and EC-PEG2 with varying PEG concentrations, and nano-micelles were prepared with and without the drug (DOX) via a dialysis method; the critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) were recorded to be 0.03 mg mL-1 and 0.00193 mg mL-1 for EC-PEG1 and EC-PEG2, respectively. The physicochemical properties of the respective nano-micelles were evaluated via various characterization techniques. The morphologies of the nano-micelles were analyzed via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the average size of the nano-micelles was recorded to be ∼80 nm. In vitro, drug release studies were done for 48 h, where 100% DOX release was recorded at pH 5.5 and 52% DOX release was recorded at pH 7.4 from the micelles. In addition, cytotoxicity studies suggested that DOX-loaded micelles were potent in killing MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cancer cells, and the blank micelles were non-toxic toward cancerous and normal cells. A cellular uptake study via fluorescence microscopy indicated the internalization of DOX-loaded micelles by cancer cells, delivering the DOX into the cellular compartments. Based on these studies, we concluded that the developed material should be studied further via in vivo studies to understand its potential as a controlled DDS to treat cancer.

Project description:In this study, the effects of the catalysis of heavy metals on the pyrolysis of waste polyester textiles (WPTs) and the adsorption behaviors of the pyrolysis products of WPTs for Cr(VI) were explored. TG-DTG analysis indicated that the metal ions catalyzed the pyrolysis process by reducing the temperature of the decomposition of WPTs. The surface morphology and pore structure of the carbons were analyzed using SEM and BET. The results demonstrated that Zn-AC possessed the largest specific surface area of 847.87 m2/g. The abundant acidic functional groups on the surface of the activated carbons were proved to be involved in the Cr(VI) adsorption process via FTIR analysis. Cr(VI) adsorption experiments indicated that the adsorption process was more favorable at low pH conditions, and the maximum adsorption capacities of Zn-AC, Fe-AC, and Cu-AC for Cr(VI) were 199.07, 136.25, and 84.47 mg/g, respectively. The FTIR and XPS analyses of the carbons after Cr(VI) adsorption, combined with the adsorption kinetics and isotherm simulations, demonstrated that the adsorption mechanism includes pore filling, an electrostatic effect, a reduction reaction, and complexation. This study showed that metal salts catalyze the pyrolysis processes of WPTs, and the activated carbons derived from waste polyester textiles are promising adsorbents for Cr(VI) removal.
