Humidity-Mediated Anisotropic Proton Conductivity through the 1D Channels of Co-MOF-74.

ABSTRACT: Large Co-MOF-74 crystals of a few hundred micrometers were prepared by solvothermal synthesis, and their structure and morphology were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), IR, and Raman spectroscopy. The hydrothermal stability of the material up to 60 °C at 93% relative humidity was verified by temperature-dependent XRD. Proton conductivity was studied by impedance spectroscopy, using a single crystal. By varying the relative humidity (70-95%), temperature (21-60 °C), and orientation of the crystal relative to the electrical potential, it was found that proton conduction occurs predominantly through the linear, unidirectional (1D) micropore channels of Co-MOF-74, and that water molecules inside the channels are responsible for the proton mobility by a Grotthuss-type mechanism.

Anisotropic membrane with high proton conductivity sustaining upon dehydration.

Project description:In fuel cells and electrolyzers, suboptimal proton conductivity and its dramatic drop at low humidity remain major drawbacks in proton exchange membranes (PEMs), including current benchmark Nafion. Sustained through-plane (TP) alignment of nanochannels was proposed as a remedy but proved challenging. We report an anisotropic composite PEM, mimicking the water-conductive composite structure of bamboo that meets this challenge. Micro- and nanoscale alignment of conductive pathways is achieved by in-plane thermal compression of a mat composed of co-electrospun Nafion and poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers stabilizing the alignment. This translates to pronounced TP-enhanced proton conductivity, twice that of pure Nafion at high humidity, 13 times larger at low humidity, and 10 times larger water diffusivity. This remarkable improvement is elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations, which indicate that stronger nanochannels alignment upon dehydration compensates for reduced water content. The presented approach paves the way to overcoming the major drawbacks of ionomers and advancing the development of next-generation membranes for energy applications.

Trojan Horse Thiocyanate: Induction and Control of High Proton Conductivity in CPO-27/MOF-74 Metal-Organic Frameworks by Metal Selection and Solvent-Free Mechanochemical Dosing.

Project description:Proton-conducting metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been gaining attention for their role as solid-state electrolytes in various devices for energy conversion and storage. Here, we present a convenient strategy for inducing and tuning of superprotonic conductivity in MOFs with open metal sites via postsynthetic incorporation of charge carriers enabled by solvent-free mechanochemistry and anion coordination. This scalable approach is demonstrated using a series of CPO-27/MOF-74 [M2(dobdc); M = Mg2+, Zn2+, Ni2+; dobdc = 2,5-dioxido-1,4-benzenedicarboxylate] materials loaded with various stoichiometric amounts of NH4SCN. The modified materials are not achievable by conventional immersion in solutions. Periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by infrared (IR) spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction, provide structures of the modified MOFs including positions of inserted ions inside the [001] channels. Despite the same type and concentration of proton carriers, the MOFs can be arranged in the increasing order of conductivity (Ni < Zn < Mg), which strongly correlates with amounts of water vapor adsorbed. We conclude that the proton conductivity of CPO-27 materials can be controlled over a few orders of magnitude by metal selection and mechanochemical dosing of ammonium thiocyanate. The dosing of a solid is shown for the first time as a useful, simple, and ecological method for the control of material conductivity.

Project description:Pyridinol, a coordinating zwitter-ionic species serves as stoichiometrically loadable and non-leachable proton carrier. The partial replacement of the pyridinol by stronger hydrogen bonding, coordinating guest, ethylene glycol (EG), offers 1000-fold enhancement in conductivity (10(-6) to 10(-3) Scm(-1)) with record low activation energy (0.11 eV). Atomic modeling coupled with (13)C-SSNMR provides insights into the potential proton conduction pathway functionalized with post-synthetically anchored dynamic proton transporting EG moieties.

Palladium supported on mixed-metal-organic framework (Co-Mn-MOF-74) for efficient catalytic oxidation of CO.

Project description:Successful monometallic and bimetallic metal-organic frameworks with different Co/Mn ratios have been synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The as-synthesized MOFs followed by deposition of Pd nanoparticles with 0.5 to 7 wt%. The XRD, BET, SEM, TEM, EDAX and FT-IR characterization results reveal that bimetallic MOFs and Pd nanoparticles were finely dispersed on the prepared MOFs surfaces. XRD results confirm the formation of the desire MOFs and show the high degree of dispersion of Pd nanoparticles. TEM images show that Pd nanoparticles are nano-sized with almost uniform shape. EDAX shows that Pd nanoparticles successfully loaded on Co0.5-Mn0.5-MOF-74 catalyst. CO oxidation as a model reaction was then used to assess the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts. The catalytic activity results show enhancement in the catalytic activities of monometallic MOFs after introducing another metal in the same framework and show an excellent improvement in CO conversion after loading with Pd nanoparticles. Furthermore, the samples that contain Pd nanoparticles exhibits higher catalytic activities which raised with increasing the content of Pd nanoparticles.

Metal-Organic Framework Co-MOF-74-Based Host-Guest Composites for Resistive Gas Sensing.

Project description:Increasing demands in the field of sensing, especially for gas detection applications, require new approaches to chemical sensors. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can play a decisive role owing to their outstanding performances regarding gas selectivity and sensitivity. The tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-infiltrated MOF, Co-MOF-74, has been prepared following the host-guest concept and evaluated in resistive gas sensing. The Co-MOF-74-TTF crystal morphology has been characterized via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, while the successful incorporation of TTF into the MOF has been validated via X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, UV/vis, infrared (IR), and Raman investigations. We demonstrate a reduced yet ample uptake of CO2 in the pores of the new material by IR imaging and adsorption isotherms. The nanocomposite Co-MOF-74-TTF exhibits an increased electrical conductivity in comparison to Co-MOF-74 which can be influenced by gas adsorption from a surrounding atmosphere. This effect could be used for gas sensing.

Twist and sliding dynamics between interpenetrated frames in Ti-MOF revealing high proton conductivity.

Project description:We report the design and synthesis of a titanium catecholate framework, MOF-217, comprised of 2,4,6-tri(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TDHT) and isolated TiO6 clusters, with 2-fold interpenetrated srs topology. The dynamics of the organic linker, breaking the C 3h symmetry, allowed for reversible twist and sliding between interpenetrated frames upon temperature change and the inclusion of small molecules. Introduction of 28 wt% imidazole into the pores of MOF-217, 28% Im-in-MOF-217, resulted in four orders of magnitude increase in proton conductivity, due to the appropriate accommodation of imidazole molecules and their proton transfer facilitated by the H-bond to the MOF structure across the pores. This MOF-based proton conductor can be operated at 100 °C with a proton conductivity of 1.1 × 10-3 S cm-1, standing among the best performing anhydrous MOF proton conductors at elevated temperature. The interframe dynamics represents a unique feature of MOFs that can be accessed in the future design of proton conductors.

Polarizable Force Field for CO<sub>2</sub> in M-MOF-74 Derived from Quantum Mechanics.

Project description:On the short term, carbon capture is a viable solution to reduce human-induced CO2 emissions, which requires an energy efficient separation of CO2. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) may offer opportunities for carbon capture and other industrially relevant separations. Especially, MOFs with embedded open metal sites have been shown to be promising. Molecular simulation is a useful tool to predict the performance of MOFs even before the synthesis of the material. This reduces the experimental effort, and the selection process of the most suitable MOF for a particular application can be accelerated. To describe the interactions between open metal sites and guest molecules in molecular simulation is challenging. Polarizable force fields have potential to improve the description of such specific interactions. Previously, we tested the applicability of polarizable force fields for CO2 in M-MOF-74 by verifying the ability to reproduce experimental measurements. Here, we develop a predictive polarizable force field for CO2 in M-MOF-74 (M = Co, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Zn) without the requirement of experimental data. The force field is derived from energies predicted from quantum mechanics. The procedure is easily transferable to other MOFs. To incorporate explicit polarization, the induced dipole method is applied between the framework and the guest molecule. Atomic polarizabilities are assigned according to the literature. Only the Lennard-Jones parameters of the open metal sites are parameterized to reproduce energies from quantum mechanics. The created polarizable force field for CO2 in M-MOF-74 can describe the adsorption well and even better than that in our previous work.

Insights into the Mechanochemical Synthesis of MOF-74.

Project description:Mechanochemical synthesis has recently emerged as a scalable "green" approach for the preparation of MOFs, but current understanding of the underlying reaction mechanisms is limited. In this work, an investigation of the reaction pathway of the mechanochemical synthesis of MOF-74 from ZnO and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid (H4HDTA), using DMF as a liquid additive, is presented. The complex reaction pathway involves the formation of four short-lived intermediate phases, prior to the crystallization of MOF-74. The crystal structures of three of these intermediates have been determined using a combination of single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction methods and are described here. The initial stages of the reaction are very fast, with a DMF solvate of H4HDTA forming after only 2 min of milling. This is followed by crystallization, after only 4 min of milling, of a triclinic one-dimensional coordination polymer, Zn(H2DHTA)(DMF)2(H2O)2, which converts into a monoclinic polymorph on additional milling. Highly crystalline MOF-74 appears after prolonged milling, for at least 70 min.

Solvent-derived defects suppress adsorption in MOF-74.

Project description:Defects in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have great impact on their nano-scale structure and physiochemical properties. However, isolated defects are easily concealed when the frameworks are interrogated by typical characterization methods. In this work, we unveil the presence of solvent-derived formate defects in MOF-74, an important class of MOFs with open metal sites. With multi-dimensional solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigations, we uncover the ligand substitution role of formate and its chemical origin from decomposed N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent. The placement and coordination structure of formate defects are determined by 13C NMR and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The extra metal-oxygen bonds with formates partially eliminate open metal sites and lead to a quantitative decrease of N2 and CO2 adsorption with respect to the defect concentration. In-situ NMR analysis and molecular simulations of CO2 dynamics elaborate the adsorption mechanisms in defective MOF-74. Our study establishes comprehensive strategies to search, elucidate and manipulate defects in MOFs.

Ligand functionalization of defect-engineered Ni-MOF-74.

Project description:Incorporating functionality into the framework of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted substantial interest because the physical and chemical properties of MOFs can be tuned by functionalizing pores. The ligand functionalization of MOF-74 is challenging because of its pristine organic ligand and framework structure. Herein, we report a series of ligand-functionalized Ni-MOF-74 derivatives synthesized by defect engineering using a mixed-ligand approach. Defect generation and ligand functionalization of Ni-MOF-74 were simultaneously achieved by incorporation of fragmented organic ligands such as 5-formylsalicylic acid, 3-hydroxysalicylic acid, 2-hydroxynicotinic acid and 5-hydroxy-1H-benzimidazole-4-carboxylic acid. The resulting defect-engineered Ni-MOF-74 derivatives maintained relatively good crystallinity up to fragment incorporation levels of ∼20% and exhibited modified permanent porosity and CO2 adsorption properties depending on the functional groups and defect concentrations in the framework.
