The Psychometric Properties of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale - Brief.

ABSTRACT: Previous psychometric analyses of the Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale and the abbreviated version (FMPS-Brief) have resulted in inconsistent findings regarding the scale's bidimensionality or unidimensionality. Different studies evaluating the scale with different statistical analyses and comparative samples report different results and recommendations. This study assessed the FMPS-B's psychometric properties by conducting both confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and pure bifactor modeling in order to address previous findings and guide future use of the scale. The results indicate that the two-factor model is the best fit. Going forward, the FMPS-B's subfactors "strivings" and "evaluative concerns" may be studied separately. Implications for future research and challenges in bifactor modeling are discussed.

Project description:The participants in the NIMH-MATRICS Consensus Development Conference on Negative Symptoms recommended that an instrument be developed that measured blunted affect, alogia, asociality, anhedonia, and avolition. The Brief Negative Symptom Scale (BNSS) is a 13-item instrument designed for clinical trials and other studies that measures these 5 domains. The interrater, test-retest, and internal consistency of the instrument were strong, with respective intraclass correlation coefficients of 0.93 for the BNSS total score and values of 0.89-0.95 for individual subscales. Comparisons with positive symptoms and other negative symptom instruments supported the discriminant and concurrent validity of the instrument.

The Multidimensional Assessment of Parenting Scale (MAPS): Development and Psychometric Properties.

Project description:The aim of the current study was to create a new measure of parenting practices, constituted by items from already established measures, to advance the measurement of parenting practices in clinical and research settings. Five stages were utilized to select optimal parenting items, establish a factor structure consisting of positive and negative dimensions of parenting, meaningfully consider child developmental stage, and ensure strong psychometric properties (reliability and validity) of the final measure. A total of 1,790 parents (44% fathers) were recruited online through Amazon's Mechanical Turk for three cohorts: Stages 1 (N = 611), 2 (N = 615), and 3 (N = 564). Each sample was equally divided by child developmental stage: Young childhood (3 to 7 years old), middle childhood (8 to 12 years old), and adolescence (13 to 17 years old). Through the five-stage empirical approach, the Multidimensional Assessment of Parenting Scale (MAPS) was developed, successfully achieving all aims. The MAPS factor structure included both positive and negative dimensions of warmth/hostility and behavioral control that were appropriate for parents of children across the developmental span. The MAPS demonstrated strong reliability and longitudinal analyses provided initial support for the validity of MAPS subscales.

Confirmatory factor structure and psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale.

Project description:The Multidimensional Peer Victimization Scale (MPVS; Mynard & Joseph, 2000) is a 16-item self-report scale that captures peer victimization across four dimensions: physical victimization, verbal victimization, social manipulation, and attacks on property. Performance of the scale has not been evaluated among older adolescents. We examined the factor structure, internal consistency reliability, and performance of the scale in two separate epidemiological U.S. samples representing different age groups: 9-14 year olds (N=610) and 15-17 year olds (N=524). The four-factor structure of the scale was affirmed in both samples, however; there was not metric invariance by gender in the younger age group. The scale and its subscales were found to have good internal consistency. Expected relationships between the MPVS and measures of irritability, anxiety, and depression were affirmed. Results support continued use of the MPVS among child and adolescent samples.

Psychometric Properties of a Multidimensional Scale of Sense of Community in the School.

Project description:Sense of community in the school has been associated with a range of important outcomes for students. However, there are currently no standard definitions of sense of community in the school with corresponding measures with established psychometric properties. To fill this gap, the main aim of the present study was to propose a model of sense of community in the school, its operationalization and to examine its key psychometric properties (factorial structure, reliability, differential item functioning, differential test functioning of the scale and discriminant, convergent, and criterion validity). Participants were 1,076 students from 22 public middle schools and 724 students from 22 public high schools located in the Italian city of Genoa and its province. To test the dimensionality of the scale, we conducted exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis under the Item Response Theory paradigm. Exploratory factor analysis confirmed three dimensions: Membership, Emotional connection, and Opportunities. A confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the bifactor model exhibited the largest improvement in fit. Cronbach's alpha, omega total, and omega hierarchical indicated a good reliability for the measure. Internal consistency was satisfactory, considering Cronbach's alpha and omega. Analysis of differential item/test functioning of the scale showed that girls and boys as well as students attending middle school and those attending high school responded in largely similar ways to the measure. Finally, the instrument demonstrated good discriminant, convergent, and criterion validity. Together, these findings indicate that our theory driven model of sense of community in the school is valid and that the instrument is a reliable measure for assessing sense of community in the school.

Development and Evaluation of the Psychometric Properties of a Brief Wisdom Development Scale.

Project description:This study was to develop an 18-item Brief Wisdom Development Scale, based on the original 66-item Wisdom Development Scale, and evaluate the psychometric properties of the proposed scale using a sample of older adults. This longitudinal study recruited 153 community-dwelling adults (mean = 72.55 years old; SD = 8.47) from older adult service centres. Using a repeated measures design, the study obtained four waves of data from the participants over 12 months. The Brief Wisdom Development Scale (BWDS) was developed based on the Stepwise Confirmatory Factor Analytical approach (SCOFA), with further verification of its factorial validity using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results suggest that the BWDS comprising 18 items with a six-factor structure is comparable with its full version and possesses good psychometric properties in internal consistency, concurrent validity, and factorial validity. The BWDS provides an efficient, reliable, and valid construct to measure wisdom. The implications for research development are discussed here.

Development and psychometric properties of a brief generic cancer knowledge scale for patients (BCKS-10).

Project description:PurposeThis study aims to introduce the development and psychometric properties of a brief generic cancer knowledge scale for patients (BCKS-10) that includes different elements of knowledge and skills (terminology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and numeracy). Although cancer knowledge is a central dimension of cancer literacy, most previous studies either investigated cancer knowledge among the general population, or among patients with a specific cancer diagnosis.MethodsQualitative interviews (n = 11) and a quantitative survey (n = 267) among peer support group leaders were conducted to further develop the BCKS-10 after literature screening. n = 500 patients with cancer were recruited across Germany between October 2020 and February 2021. Construct validity, item discrimination and reliability were tested.ResultsANOVA revealed no significant differences of the knowledge score between various cancer sites, a significant positive association with education, and a negative association with migration background by trend supporting construct validity. In terms of item discrimination, the corrected item-total correlation of 8 out of 10 items were above the threshold of 0.3. Cronbach's alpha of about 0.68 revealed an acceptable internal consistency as the tool is brief and consists of different dimensions.ConclusionOverall, the findings show that the BCKS-10 is a suitable tool to briefly assess cancer knowledge among patients independent of cancer site. However, further surveys have to be conducted to validate the psychometric properties and enhance the BCKS-10.

Evaluating the Dimensionality and Psychometric Properties of the Brief Self-Control Scale Amongst Chinese University Students.

Project description:The aim of this study was to assess the dimensionality and psychometric properties of the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) using a sample of university students in mainland China. Nine hundred and three students from a Chinese university participated in this study. The internal consistency, criterion validity, factorial validity and construct validity of the scale were examined. The Chinese versions of the BSCS demonstrated good internal consistency with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.81. The BSCS also showed significant moderate correlations with other construct-related scales. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) suggested that only a modified 11-item BSCS with a four-factor structure was a good model fit in the sample of Chinese university students, as ?2 (106.626)/37 = 2.88, SRMR = 0.036, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.992, Tucker-Lewis fit index (TLI) = 0.989, RMSEA = 0.046. The implications for research and theoretical development are discussed.

Psychometric properties of the multidimensional health locus of control scale form C in a non-Western culture.

Project description:Form C of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scales (MHLC-C) was designed to investigate health-related control beliefs of persons with an existing medical condition. The aim of the present study was to examine the psychometric properties of this instrument in a culture characterized by external control beliefs and learned helplessness-contrary to the societal context of original test development. Altogether, 374 Hungarian patients with cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular and musculoskeletal disorders were enrolled in the study. Besides the MHLC-C, instruments measuring general control beliefs, anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, and health behaviors were also administered to evaluate the validity of the scale. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analytic techniques were used to investigate the factor structure of the scale. Our results showed that the Hungarian adaptation of the instrument had a slightly different structure than the one originally hypothesized: in the present sample, a three-factor structure emerged where the items of the Doctors and the Others subscales loaded onto a single common component. Internal reliability of all three subscales was adequate (alphas between .71 and .79). Data concerning the instrument's validity were comparable with previous results from Western countries. These findings may suggest that health locus of control can be construed very similarly to Western countries even in a post-communist society-regardless of the potential differences in general control beliefs.

A Psychometric Analysis of the Brief Self-Control Scale.

Project description:The Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) is a widely used measure of self-control, a construct associated with beneficial psychological outcomes. Several studies have investigated the psychometric properties of the BSCS but have failed to reach consensus. This has resulted in an unstable and ambiguous understanding of the scale and its psychometric properties. The current study sought resolution by implementing scale evaluation approaches guided by modern psychometric literature. Additionally, our goal was to provide a more comprehensive item analysis via the item response theory (IRT) framework. Results from the current study support both unidimensional and multidimensional factor structures for the 13-item version of the BSCS. The addition of an IRT analysis provided a new perspective on item- and test-level functioning. The goal of a more defensible psychometric grounding for the BSCS is to promote greater consistency, stability, and trust in future results.

Resilient Coping Levels and Psychometric Properties of the Brief Resilient Coping Scale Among Nursing Professionals in Saudi Arabia.

Project description:ObjectivesThis cross-sectional survey assessed resilient coping levels and their relationship with the sociodemographic characteristics of nursing professionals in Saudi Arabia.MethodsAdult (≥18 years) registered nurses who had been practicing for ≥1 year were included in the study. Resilient coping levels (as assessed via a 4-item Brief Resilience Coping Scale; BRCS) and the data of sociodemographic and other characteristics were collected. Descriptive analysis and ordinal logistic regression were used to analyze the data. Furthermore, the psychometric properties of the BRCS are also reported.ResultsOverall, 216 nursing professionals were included. The mean BRCS score was 14.6 (standard deviation = 3.6), with most nursing professionals (62.5%) reporting medium-to-high resilience coping levels. The ordinal logistic regression model demonstrated that nurses with increasing age (p = 0.002), best overall health (p = 0.001), and in the outpatient department (p = 0.049) and intensive care unit (p = 0.032) had significantly high resilient coping levels. The internal consistency of the BRCS was good (Cronbach's alpha = 0.80). The results of the exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis clearly indicate a unidimensional solution with one factor.ConclusionsIn summary, most nursing professionals in Saudi Arabia showed medium-to-high resilience coping levels. Moreover, this study suggests that the BRCS was found to be a psychometrically reliable and adequate tool for assessing resilience coping levels and provides valuable insights into the relationship between resilient coping levels and the sociodemographic characteristics of nursing professionals in Saudi Arabia.
