Near-Complete Genome Sequence of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus from Colombia.

ABSTRACT: Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is an important pathogen of domestic and wild felids. Although serological tests suggest the presence of FIV in cats from Colombia, no molecular characterization has been reported. Here, we describe the near-complete genome of FIV subtype A from a Colombian domestic cat.

Nucleotide sequence analysis of feline immunodeficiency virus: genome organization and relationship to other lentiviruses.

Project description:We determined the complete nucleotide sequence of an infectious proviral molecular clone (FIV-14) of the feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). FIV-14 has a genome organization similar in complexity to other lentiviruses. In addition to three large open reading frames representing the gag, pol, and env genes, at least four small open reading frames are present in the pol-env intergenic, env, and env-3' long terminal repeat regions. Nucleotide and deduced amino acid sequence alignments of the FIV coding sequences with analogous sequences of other lentiviruses revealed significant identities only in the gag and pol genes. Phylogenetic tree analyses of gag and pol gene-encoded protein sequences demonstrate that FIV is more closely related to the ungulate lentiviruses, equine infectious anemia virus and visna virus, than to the primate lentiviruses, human and simian immunodeficiency viruses.

Project description:This full-length genome sequence of a feline leukemia virus Kawakami-Theilen strain (designated KT-FeLV-UCD-1), produced from the chronically infected FL74-UCD-1 cell line, was obtained using high-throughput sequencing. It consisted of 8,464 bp and had a genomic organization similar to that of other gammaretroviruses, containing long terminal repeats and open reading frames for Gag, Pol, and Env.

The closest relationship (71.2% amino acid similarity) was with Bean common mosaic necrosis virus.

Nucleotide sequence and genomic organization of feline immunodeficiency virus.

Project description:An infectious molecular clone of the Petaluma strain of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) was isolated from a recombinant bacteriophage library containing genomic DNA prepared from FIV-infected Crandall feline kidney (CRFK) cells. The integrated provirus has a total length of 9472 base pairs. Three long open reading frames corresponding to GAG, POL, and ENV gene coding frames are evident. In addition, an open reading frame overlaps the 3' end of POL, in the region that encodes viral infectivity factor in the primate viruses. Several short open reading frames are present in the intergenic region between POL and ENV and within ENV, which may serve as exons for production of TAT and REV equivalents in FIV. Alignment of the predicted amino acid sequences of the FIV proteins with those of other lentiviruses indicates that FIV did not arise recently from any other characterized lentivirus.

Project description:The first cell culture isolation and whole-genome sequence of a feline morbillivirus from Germany are described here. Phylogenetic analysis revealed highest similarity to isolates from Japan and a more distant relationship to strains from Italy, Hong Kong, and the United States. Therefore, feline morbilliviruses should be divided into two different genotypes.
