Exploring the Influences of Nurses' Partnership with Parents, Attitude to Families' Importance in Nursing Care, and Professional Self-Efficacy on Quality of Pediatric Nursing Care: A Path Model.

ABSTRACT: This study examined the effects of nurse-parent partnership, nurses' attitude to families' importance in nursing care, and nursing professional self-efficacy on the quality of pediatric nursing care. BACKGROUND:The quality of pediatric nursing care based on family-centered care is defined by the qualitative care behavior of nurses from the perspective of hospitalized children and their families. METHODS:The participants were 218 nurses in pediatric wards in hospitals. Data were collected using self-report questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and path analysis. RESULTS:Among the factors influencing the perceived quality of respect, explanation, and skillfulness, nurse experience showed the greatest total effect. The nurse-parent partnership had the greatest direct effect on the quality of respect and the greatest total effect on kindness. Nursing professional self-efficacy showed the greatest direct effect on explanation and the largest total effect on nurse-parent partnership and nurses' attitude to families' importance in nursing care. CONCLUSIONS:To improve the quality of pediatric nursing care, it is necessary to provide a working environment in which pediatric nurses can work continuously. Hospitals should also develop a program that enables proper collaboration between nurses and parents of hospitalized children and improves nursing professional self-efficacy.

Project description:AimTo map the factors associated with nurses' positive attitudes towards families' involvement in nursing care and to identify any existing gaps in knowledge.BackgroundSeveral tools have been proposed to assess the attitudes, beliefs and practices of nurses towards families in different care contexts. However, there is a knowledge gap on how the results of these tools can identify the factors that are associated with more positive attitudes of nurses.DesignA scoping review based on the steps proposed by the Joanna Briggs Institute.MethodsThree independent reviewers searched the databases: PUBMED/Medline; LILACS; Virtual Health Library; PsycInfo; Google Scholar; SCOPUS and CINAHL, from 2006 to August 2021, guided by the question: What are the factors associated with nurses' positive attitudes towards families´ involvement in nursing care, in studies that used one or both of the following two scales 'Families' Importance in Nursing Care- Nurses' Attitudes' and 'Family Nursing Practice Scale'? This review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR.ResultsTwenty-six primary studies were identified, in which 9,620 nurses participated. Positive attitudes were associated with three types of variables: (a) personal-longer working career (42.3%) and older age (26.9%); (b) educational-higher level of academic education (30.8%) and family nursing education (23.0%); and (c) workplace-working in primary health care and/or outpatient clinics (34.6%) or in a unit with philosophy/approach to families (23.0%).ConclusionsPersonal variables such as age and time of service are non-modifiable aspects, but educational and workplace variables are subject to intervention to improve nurses' attitudes towards families' involvement in nursing care. Continuing development programmes about family care can constitute important strategies to improve positive attitudes of nurses towards families in practice.Relevance to clinical practiceRecognising the characteristics associated with nurses´ positive attitudes towards families may enable the development of tailored interventions that promote family-focused care.

Project description:The Taiwanese government has promoted palliative care consultation services (PCCS) to support terminally ill patients in acute ward settings to receive palliative care since 2005. Such an intervention can enhance the quality of life and dignity of terminally ill patients. However, research focusing on the relationship between the knowledge, attitude and practice of a PCCS using path modelling in nursing staff is limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of path modeling on the knowledge, attitude and practice toward PCCS in Taiwanese nursing staff.This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study design using convenience sampling. Data collected included demographics, knowledge, attitude and practice as measured by the PCCS inventory (KAP-PCCSI). Two hundred and eighty-four nursing staff from a medical center in northern Taiwan participated in the study in 2013. We performed descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and path modeling using SPSS 19.0 and set p < 0.05 as the statistical significance threshold.The results showed that the identical factor significantly associated with knowledge, attitude, and practice toward PCCS among nurses was the frequency of contact with PCCS. In addition, higher level of knowledge toward PCCS was associated with working in haematology and oncology wards, and participation in education related to palliative care. A more positive attitude toward PCCS was associated with working in a haematology and oncology ward, and experience of friends or relatives dying. Higher level of practice toward PCCS was associated with nurses who participated in education related to palliative care. In the path modeling, we found that holders of a master's degree indirectly positive affected practice toward PCCS. Possession of a bachelor degree or above, being single, working within a haematology and oncology ward, and frequency of contact with PCCS positively affected practice toward PCCS.Based on this study, it is proposed that consultation with PCCS has a positive impact on the care of terminally ill patients. Encouragement of staff to undertake further education can improve the practice of ward staff providing palliative care.

Project description:AimTo know the nurses' attitudes toward family involvement in nursing care and factors that can influence it.DesignA cross-sectional design study was carried out on 253 clinical nurses.MethodsData was collected from 253 clinical nurses using the Families' Importance in Nursing Care-Nurses' Attitudes Scale, the Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire (DCSQ) and the Iceland Health Care Practitioner Illness Beliefs Questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, analysis of variance, Pearson's and Spearman's correlations, and multiple linear regression.ResultsNurses generally had a positive attitude toward the importance of involving families in nursing care (M = 106.0; SD 11.9). Nurses who work in outpatient consultation, held a master's degree, and have a family-oriented approach in their work unit showed more supportive attitudes. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that personal factors, including nurses' beliefs, and work-related factors, including control over work, and job satisfaction, were the more influencing factors on nurses' attitudes toward family.ConclusionThis study offers valuable knowledge for understanding the attitudes of nurses toward family involvement in nursing care. Nurses have a positive attitude toward families. However, nurses' beliefs about family and illness, control over work, and perceived job satisfaction are key factors that influence these attitudes.Implications for the patient careUnderstanding the factors linked to nurses' favourable attitudes toward families can facilitate the adoption of a family-centered approach in healthcare settings, ultimately enhancing the quality of care delivered to both the patient and their family.ImpactThe results may inform the development and implementation of strategies that facilitate working with a more family-focused approach in daily nursing practice.Reporting methodThis paper is reported according to the STROBE Statement.Patient or public contributionNo patient or public contribution.
