Integrative illustration for coronavirus outreach.

ABSTRACT: Two illustrations integrate current knowledge about severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronaviruses and their life cycle. They have been widely used in education and outreach through free distribution as part of a coronavirus-related resource at Protein Data Bank (PDB)-101, the education portal of the RCSB PDB. Scientific sources for creation of the illustrations and examples of dissemination and response are presented.

Project description:Data from genomics, proteomics, structural biology and cryo-electron microscopy are integrated into a structural illustration of a cross section through an entire JCVI-syn3.0 minimal cell. The illustration is designed with several goals: to inspire excitement in science, to depict the underlying scientific results accurately, and to be feasible in traditional media. Design choices to achieve these goals include reduction of visual complexity with simplified representations, use of orthographic projection to retain scale relationships, and an approach to color that highlights functional compartments of the cell. Given that this simple cell provides an attractive laboratory for exploring the central processes needed for life, several functional narratives are included in the illustration, including division of the cell and the first depiction of an entire cellular proteome. The illustration lays the foundation for 3D molecular modeling of this cell.

Broadening the impact of plant science through innovative, integrative, and inclusive outreach.

Project description:Population growth and climate change will impact food security and potentially exacerbate the environmental toll that agriculture has taken on our planet. These existential concerns demand that a passionate, interdisciplinary, and diverse community of plant science professionals is trained during the 21st century. Furthermore, societal trends that question the importance of science and expert knowledge highlight the need to better communicate the value of rigorous fundamental scientific exploration. Engaging students and the general public in the wonder of plants, and science in general, requires renewed efforts that take advantage of advances in technology and new models of funding and knowledge dissemination. In November 2018, funded by the National Science Foundation through the Arabidopsis Research and Training for the 21st century (ART 21) research coordination network, a symposium and workshop were held that included a diverse panel of students, scientists, educators, and administrators from across the US. The purpose of the workshop was to re-envision how outreach programs are funded, evaluated, acknowledged, and shared within the plant science community. One key objective was to generate a roadmap for future efforts. We hope that this document will serve as such, by providing a comprehensive resource for students and young faculty interested in developing effective outreach programs. We also anticipate that this document will guide the formation of community partnerships to scale up currently successful outreach programs, and lead to the design of future programs that effectively engage with a more diverse student body and citizenry.

Adapting an internet-delivered intervention for depression for a Colombian college student population: An illustration of an integrative empirical approach.

Project description:BackgroundCulturally adapted psychotherapy (CAP) studies are limited and until now there are few published examples that illustrate the process of cultural adaptation with internet-delivered treatments.AimThis paper aims to illustrate an integrative approach to the cultural adaptation of an evidence-based internet-delivered cognitive-behavioural therapy intervention for depression (Space from Depression programme).MethodMixed method approach utilising quantitative and qualitative methods to assist in the cultural adaptation of the Space from Depression programme was used. The adaptation involved a framework for cultural sensitivity (CSF), alongside an ecological validity framework (EVF) and principles from cross-cultural assessment research. The method included the development of a theory-informed measure, the Cultural Relevance Questionnaire (CRQ), designed specifically for this research.ResultsThe adaptation included an establishment of CSF, which included the incorporation of Colombian cultural expressions. College students' (n = 5) and experts' (n = 7) evaluated the EVF based on cross-cultural assessment principles of a preliminary adapted version through the CRQ, showing reliability in the sample (Cronbach's Alpha 0.744). Qualitative analysis supported the culturally sensitive changes or incorporations made to the programme, such as: personal stories and textual translations from English and these were considered ecologically valid and representative.ConclusionsThe research provided support for the idea that CAP can be conducted systematically for internet-delivered interventions.

Effect of Outreach Messages on Adolescent Well-Child Visits and Coronavirus Disease 2019 Vaccine Rates: A Randomized, Controlled Trial.

Project description:ObjectiveTo determine effectiveness of text/telephone outreach messages, with and without coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine information.Study designWe conducted an intent-to-treat, multiarm, randomized clinical trial with adolescents aged 12-17 years. Eligible patients did not have an adolescent well-care visit in the past year or scheduled in the next 45 days or an active electronic health record portal account. We randomized participants to the standard message, COVID-19 vaccine message, or no message (control) group and delivered 2 text messages or telephone calls (per family preference) to the message groups. The primary outcome was adolescent well-care visit completion within 8 weeks, and secondary outcomes were adolescent well-care visit scheduled within 2 weeks and receiving COVID-19 vaccine within 8 weeks.ResultsWe randomized 1235 adolescents (mean age, 14 ± 1.5 years; 51.6% male; 76.7% Black; 4.1% Hispanic/Latinx; 88.3% publicly insured). The standard message group had higher odds of scheduling an adolescent well-care visit compared with the control group (OR, 2.07; 95% CI, 1.21-3.52) and COVID-19 vaccine message group (OR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.00-2.74). The odds of completing an adolescent well-care visit did not differ significantly (standard message group vs control group; OR, 1.35; 95% CI, 0.88-2.06; COVID-19 vaccine message group vs control group, OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 0.87-2.03). In per-protocol analyses, adolescents in the standard message group were twice as likely as the control group to receive the COVID-19 vaccine (OR, 2.48; 95% CI, 1.05-5.86).ConclusionsOutreach messages were minimally effective. Efforts are needed to address widening disparities.Clinical trial registrationClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04904744.

Illustrate: Software for Biomolecular Illustration.

Project description:The small program Illustrate generates non-photorealistic images of biological molecules for use in dissemination, outreach, and education. The method has been used as part of the "Molecule of the Month," an ongoing educational column at the RCSB Protein Data Bank (http://rcsb.org). Insights from 20 years of application of the program are presented, and the program has been released both as open-source Fortran at GitHub and through an interactive web-based interface.

CellPAINT: Turnkey Illustration of Molecular Cell Biology.

Project description:CellPAINT is an interactive digital tool that allows non-expert users to create illustrations of the molecular structure of cells and viruses. We present a new release with several key enhancements, including the ability to generate custom ingredients from structure information in the Protein Data Bank, and interaction, grouping, and locking functions that streamline the creation of assemblies and illustration of large, complex scenes. An example of CellPAINT as a tool for hypothesis generation in the interpretation of cryoelectron tomograms is presented. CellPAINT is freely available at http://ccsb.scripps.edu/cellpaint.
