Project description:BackgroundSince the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan in December 2019, lifestyle has been changing to an online-based learning and working environment rather than on-site, and improvisation training is no exception. However, no research compares the efficacy of online versus on-site training. Although we believed that the most effective way to learn improvisation is an on-site format, it is important to explore how format differences can affect learners.MethodWe offer three types of training such as on-site training (n = 6) (Consisting of 1 female with age ≥40 and <50, and 5 males with ages ≥20 and <50), hybrid training (Instructor participates from online and learners participate on-site) (n = 120) (Consisting of 55 female with age ≥15 and <20, and 65 males with ages ≥15 and <50), and online training (n = 20) (Consisting of 4 female with age ≥20 and <30, and 16 males with ages ≥20 and <50) We collected pretest, test, and posttest data by using the Kansei Analyzer, a simplified electroencephalograph (EEG) and Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire.ResultsAll formats of training displayed an increase in vigor and a decrease in depression, confusion, tension, anger, and fatigue. The online training displayed better results than the on-site training. Regardless of the format, all training displayed an increase in stress during the activities and a decrease in stress after the activity without changes in other indexes. Additionally, on-site training displayed an increase in sleepiness and stress during the activities. Some participants were tested twice but no significant differences were found between the initial results and the secondary results.ConclusionIn this study, we found evidence that online improvisation can lead to the prevention of depressive symptoms and can function as a method for the reduction of stress in conjunction with the increase of individual vigor. However, a future study is required due to the low number of participants and the absence of POMS data for the on-site training. Any future studies should account for these factors while examining other data such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and pulse.

Project description:BackgroundTo prepare key stakeholders for the global COVID-19 vaccination rollout, the World Health Organization and partners developed online vaccination training packages. The online course was launched in December 2020 on the OpenWHO learning platform. This paper presents the findings of an evaluation of this course.ObjectiveThe aim of this evaluation was to provide insights into user experiences and challenges, measure the impact of the course in terms of knowledge gained, and anticipate potential interest in future online vaccination courses.MethodsThe primary source of data was the anonymized information on course participants, enrollment, completion, and scores from the OpenWHO platform's statistical data and metric reporting system. Data from the OpenWHO platform were analyzed from the opening of the courses in mid-December 2020 to mid-April 2021. In addition, a learner feedback survey was sent by email to all course participants to complete within a 3-week period (March 19 to April 9, 2021). The survey was designed to determine the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the training packages and to understand barriers to access.ResultsDuring the study period, 53,593 learners enrolled in the course. Of them, 30,034 (56.0%) completed the course, which is substantially higher than the industry benchmark of 5%-10% for a massive open online course (MOOC). Overall, learners averaged 76.5% on the prequiz compared to 85% on the postquiz, resulting in an increase in average score of 9%. A total of 2019 learners from the course participated in the survey. Nearly 98% (n=1647 fully agree, n=308 somewhat agree; N=1986 survey respondents excluding missing values) of respondents fully or somewhat agreed that they had more confidence in their ability to support COVID-19 vaccination following completion of this course.ConclusionsThe online vaccine training was well received by the target audience, with a measurable impact on knowledge gained. The key benefits of online training were the convenience, self-paced nature, access to downloadable material, and ability to replay material, as well as an increased ability to concentrate. Online training was identified as a timely, cost-effective way of delivering essential training to a large number of people to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

Project description:BackgroundBlended learning, integrating face-to-face and virtual methods, has become essential in clinical education, enhancing student satisfaction, engagement and knowledge outcomes. Particularly, online case-based learning emerges as a promising pedagogy to foster clinical reasoning skills. Despite the well-documented clinical reasoning cultivation through face-to-face case-based learning, the ability of online case-based learning to cultivate clinical reasoning remains unexplored. This study investigates the role of online case-based learning in fostering clinical reasoning skills among clinical-year medical students.MethodsA mixed-methods sequential explanatory research study was adopted. In the first phase, quantitative data were gathered through a 16-item Likert scale questionnaire adapted from validated clinical reasoning questionnaires. In the second phase, focus group discussions were conducted to expand on the understanding of quantitative results.ResultsIn total, 160 students completed the questionnaire (45% response rate), and 26 participated in focus group discussions. Participants agreed that online case-based learning fostered clinical reasoning skills (mean = 2.94) through different formats, such as clinical role play, simulated ward rounds and virtual consultation. Compared to face-to-face clinical teaching, the focus group revealed that participants were allowed to practise giving explanations to patients, engage in more in-depth discussions, and receive more comprehensive feedback on their clinical reasoning skills during online case-based learning. The barriers to online clinical reasoning skills development were poorer communication skills development and reduced student engagement. The lack of patient complexities of cases and the inability to perform physical examinations hindered students' clinical reasoning ability. Suggestions to improve clinical reasoning cultivation include utilising actual patient cases, increasing case complexity and session interactivity.ConclusionThis study highlights how online case-based learning can support the development of clinical reasoning skills in medical students, encouraging future educators to adopt a blended learning approach. Future research should focus on objective assessments, long-term impacts and innovative methods to improve clinical reasoning skill development continuously.

Project description:BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has become a global health issue and has significantly impacted university education. As a result, learning methods have been shifted to be delivered through online learning. Online learning has increased reliance on computer screens, which can cause visual discomfort and may cause or exacerbate headaches due to prolonged screen exposure. However, time spent using electronic devices has not yet been examined in relation to the online learning experience.PurposeThis study assessed the online learning experiences and reported headaches associated with screen exposure time among health sciences university students.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among a convenience sample of 353 students at Saudi University. Online learning experiences, screen time exposure, and reported headache questionnaires were used to collect the data.ResultsStudents were moderately satisfied with the online learning experience. Nevertheless, they faced many challenges with online learning that affected their communication efficacy, and they preferred that blended learning be continued. In addition, this study found a high prevalence of headache (65.72%) and a high screen exposure time among the studied students (52.69%). Increased screen time exposure is linked with increased headache and migraine reporting among students (p < 0.05).ConclusionHeadache is a common health issue among health professional students, and it can harm their academic performance and quality of life, especially related to online learning. Greater awareness of headaches, stress reduction and prevention programs, and ergonomic practices to deal with headaches are essential. Blended learning approaches can improve student learning and performance in health science courses.

Project description:Academically productive talk (APT) in classrooms has long been associated with significant gains in student learning and development. Yet, due to COVID-19 related restrictions, teachers around the world were forced to adapt their teaching to online, remote settings during the pandemic. In this investigation, we studied APT in junior high school during extended online, remote teaching spells. Specifically, we focused on the extent APT was a part of online teaching practices, what characterized teachers who tended to promote APT more in online, remote teaching, and associations between APT and teacher well-being, as well as student motivation and engagement. Findings from two survey studies (Study 1: 99 teachers, and 83 students; Study 2: 399 teachers) revealed the following patterns: Students and teachers agreed that APT was used to a lesser extent in remote, online classes, and associated with more interactive instructional formats (whole classroom discussion, peer group work, and questioning), but not with frontal teaching and individual task completion. Teachers with a higher sense of teaching self-efficacy, autonomous orientations, and higher empathy tended to promote APT in online, remote teaching more. More APT was associated with greater teachers' work-related (i.e., lower burnout, more commitment to teaching, and lower turnover intentions) and psychological well-being (i.e., less depressive and anxiety symptoms, and higher subjective well-being). Finally, student experiences with APT in online, remote learning was positively associated with learning motivation and engagement. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Project description:Online learning is currently adopted by educational institutions worldwide to provide students with ongoing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though online learning research has been advancing in uncovering student experiences in various settings (i.e., tertiary, adult, and professional education), very little progress has been achieved in understanding the experience of the K-12 student population, especially when narrowed down to different school-year segments (i.e., primary and secondary school students). This study explores how students at different stages of their K-12 education reacted to the mandatory full-time online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we conducted a province-wide survey study in which the online learning experience of 1,170,769 Chinese students was collected from the Guangdong Province of China. We performed cross-tabulation and Chi-square analysis to compare students' online learning conditions, experiences, and expectations. Results from this survey study provide evidence that students' online learning experiences are significantly different across school years. Foremost, policy implications were made to advise government authorises and schools on improving the delivery of online learning, and potential directions were identified for future research into K-12 online learning.

Project description:DivulgaMicro is a Brazilian science communication and outreach project run by three young female scientists. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we promoted the first virtual edition of the DivulgaMicro Workshop. Here, we describe adaptations implemented to deliver the virtual edition and its assessment by the participants. We offered a 3-day workshop addressing manuscript writing and publishing, poster design and oral presentations, and strategies for effectively communicating with the lay public on Days 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Each daily session was divided into short lectures and active learning through interactive and cooperative activities. We applied pre- and postsession surveys daily to assess participants' learning, with an opinion questionnaire at the end of the workshop. We selected 50 of 221 applicants, but only 38 of those selected participated in the workshop. Correct answers were significantly higher (p < 0.01) in the postsession surveys each day. Most of the 34 participants who answered the opinion questionnaire (97%) would recommend the workshop to their colleagues. Participants stated that the workshop content was transmitted in a clear and straightforward manner, and they considered the online format suitable for knowledge acquisition. Participants were satisfied with the organization, dynamics, and interactivity. Topics addressed on Day 3 (61.8%) and Day 1 (23.5%) were most liked and were considered most useful in the participants' careers. We believe that the overall success of the workshop is due to the combination of short lectures with active-learning activities, the use of virtual platforms that enabled effective communication between participants and instructors, and the support of our collaborators.

Project description:BackgroundBackground: To prepare medical students for their future, they must become acquainted with clinical practice, for example by means of simulations, clerkships and discussing patient cases. By connecting these different approaches, according to Kolb´s experiential learning cycle, the learning effect can be strengthened.MethodologyIn the development of a didactical program for students who are being prepared for their role as general practitioners, we have adopted a new didactic approach, in which educational formats are interlinked, according to Kolb´s experiential learning cycle. The content of these courses is determined by the Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for the clerkship in family medicine, combined with the most common chief complaints of patients in the GP's practice. In 2019, the first course was implemented at the Technical University of Munich, Germany, with 6 medical students. A first seminar discusses patients who the students have seen for themselves during their clerkship in family medicine. In addition, matching theory is discussed and skills are practiced. In the next seminar, students apply the acquired knowledge and skills in scenarios with standardized patients. Students evaluated the courses as positive. The evaluations show they find discussing personally experienced patient cases and the opportunity to practice very valuable.ConclusionsA course design according to Kolb's Experiential learning cycle, which integrates experience, theory and simulation, is a valuable addition to existing forms of teaching in medical education. Students appreciated both discussing personally experienced patient cases and the opportunity to re-practice similar cases in a simulated environment. To gain more insight into the learning effects, it is recommended to further explore this approach in a different context.

Project description:BackgroundAdvancement in medical education has led to the adoption of online learning platforms in the development and execution of learning modules. Online learning platforms are appraised and accessed regarding their capability of ensuring a seamless experience and enhancing satisfaction in users, especially students. In this study, the satisfaction and learning experience of medical students were studied with emphasis on their sociodemographic features.MethodData were collected using a structured questionnaires distributed to a group of medical students in a medical college in Eastern Nigeria. 300 undergraduate students from Enugu State University of Science and Technology participated in this survey from four departments: anatomy, medical laboratory, nursing, and medicine. The questionnaires included closed-ended questions divided into sociodemographic information, learning experience, and satisfaction with online learning.ResultResults from the survey indicate that sociodemographic factors like the course of study and sex of respondents show a noticeable relationship to the learning experience and satisfaction with online learning platforms while other factors have no impact. The majority of respondents (63.1%) strong agreed that online learning platform effectively delivers medical course content with a mean value of user learning experience of online learning platform as 4.15.ConclusionFeature perception, learning experience, and satisfaction level of medical students were dependent on their course of study and sex, thus independent course curriculum was relevant in determining satisfaction of students. The findings of this study add to the empirical and practical understanding of students' satisfaction with using online learning platforms as a success in medical education and its use is recommended by other medical institutions.

Project description:With the continuous development and application of online interactive activities and network transmission technology, online interactive behaviors such as online discussion meetings and online teaching have become indispensable in people's studies and work. However, the effectiveness of working with online discussions and feedback from participants on their conference performance has been a major concern, and this is the issue examined in this post. Based on the above issues, this paper designs an online discussion activity-level evaluation system based on voiceprint recognition technology. The application system developed in this project is divided into two parts; the first part is to segment the online discussion audio into multiple independent audio segments by audio segmentation technology and train the voiceprint recognition model to predict the speaker's identity in each separate audio component. In the second part, we propose a linear normalized online meeting activity-level calculation model based on the modified main indexes by traversing and counting each participant's speaking frequency and total speaking time as the main indexes for activity-level evaluation. To make the evaluation results more objective, reasonable, and distinguishable, the activity score of each participant is calculated, and each participant's activity-level in the discussion meeting is derived by combining the fuzzy membership function. To test the system's performance, we designed an experiment with 25 participants in an online discussion meeting, with two assistants manually recording the discussion and a host moderating the meeting. The results of the experiment showed that the system's evaluation results matched those recorded by the two assistants. The system can fulfill the task of distinguishing the level of activity of participants in online discussions.
