Perception and experience of academic Jordanian ophthalmologists with E-Learning for undergraduate course during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Electronic-learning (e-Learning) is a form of education that utilizes information and communications technology to access online teaching and learning. This study aims to evaluate the e-Learning experience among Jordanian academic ophthalmologists during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Material and methods

A cross-sectional survey was applied by using a questionnaire that was distributed among 23 academic ophthalmologists working at 6 medical schools in Jordan during the lockdown. The questionnaire included questions about the ophthalmologists' experience with e-Learning, advantages and disadvantages of e-Learning, interactions of medical students for the e-Learning and the expectations of e-Learning for the future.

Results

A total of 22 out of 23 academic ophthalmologists responded. Flexibility of e-Learning to time and place was a major advantage (95.5%), whereas lack of skills was the main obstacle for e-Learning (77.3%). Nineteen participants (86.4%) were not satisfied with e-Learning as the sole method for undergraduate teaching. To improve the original on-campus two-week ophthalmology course, 12 (54.5%) suggested integrating e-Learning into the curriculum, 3 (13.6%) preferred extending the period of training, and 7 (31.8%) reported that their tight schedule does not allow for more tasks.

Conclusion

The experience of e-Learning was positive. Most believed that e-Learning would have a prominent role in the future of medical education and proposed blended learning programs.

Project description:Objective Evaluate undergraduate students’ experience in a synchronous online course that utilized flipped learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. Use of Theory or Research In studies using face-to-face courses, flipped learning has helped students become independent learners compared to traditional, lecture-based courses. However, studies investigating flipped learning rely on face-to-face courses and it is unknown if this model can be effectively applied to the online, synchronous learning environment. Target Audience Upper-level undergraduate students (n = 12) in an advanced nutrition synchronous online course at a midsize, private Midwestern university using Zoom software Course/Curriculum Description In this online, synchronous flipped class, students read textbook chapters and/or watched videos prior to coming to class. Synchronous online classes conducted via zoom were utilized for applying material. Breakout rooms were utilized for team-based learning activities. Example topics covered in class include macronutrient and micronutrient metabolism. Evaluation Methods Students completed 5 learning reflections throughout the semester. Content analysis was applied to these reflections to discover themes by two investigators. Results Five themes were discovered from the reflections: dependency, peer support, metacognition, asking questions, and effort. Overall, students did not become independent learners and depended on the instructor to explain things to them; however, students did recognize they had room for growth in their efforts to learn on their own. Peer support using breakout rooms during class provided a safe space and much needed support and interaction, especially during a socially isolated time. While students valued the learning moments that came from asking questions, they largely relied on others to ask questions. Conclusions Even though students were able to grow and make strides as learners during the flipped, remote course, they never became fully independent learners. Utilizing breakout rooms for team-based learning may help students develop the confidence in asking questions and learning from mistakes. Additionally, compared to previous studies, students in this remote course emphasized the benefits of the team-based learning for social support and interaction. Funding None

Project description:ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the lived experience of Jordanian front-line healthcare workers (FHCWs), including their experienced challenges and adaptations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.DesignA phenomenological qualitative design was used to highlight the experiences of a sample Jordanian FHCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic. Qualitative interviews were conducted using a semistructured guide with open-ended questions, audiotaped and then transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis of the transcribed narratives was conducted using an open coding line by line to develop themes and related subthemes.SettingMobile COVID-19 testing and contact tracing units during an active surge of cases in Jordan between May and September 2020.ParticipantsParticipants were recruited using purposive sampling method and consisted of 15 FHCWs (2 physicians, 10 nurses, 2 paramedics and 1 laboratory technician) who have worked in testing and contact tracing teams in the community and have dealt with suspected or confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection.ResultsParticipant narratives were classified into two main overarching themes; challenges and adaptation themes. The challenges theme was exhibited as follows: (1) an excruciating encounter with an invisible enemy, (2) distorted knowledge about COVID-19 and (3) organisational and administrative challenges. The adaptation theme was exhibited as follows: (1) seeking relevant knowledge about the disease and (2) seeking more connectedness.ConclusionsThe COVID-19 pandemic exerted many challenges for FHCWs at multiple levels; intrapersonal and interpersonal, organisational and societal levels. Nevertheless, a number of adaptation strategies within these levels have been reported. This study helps to provide the base on which healthcare officials and public health personnel can formulate preparedness plans that tackle challenges faced by front-line workers, which ultimately enhance the resilience of healthcare systems to withstand future pandemics.
