The rediscovery of Uraria lacei Craib (Leguminosae) after 67 years from India.

ABSTRACT: Manipur is one of the biodiversity-rich states in the North-Eastern region of India, and it is also part of the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot with rich plant diversity and endemism. Recent field exploration in the area has resulted in the rediscovery of Uraria lacei Craib after 67 years from its last collection in 1952. The rediscovery of this beautiful species fills a gap in the current distribution knowledge and should pave the way for its immediate conservation and propagation.

The complete chloroplast genome and phylogenetic analysis of Piptanthus concolor Craib (Leguminosae).

Project description:In this study, we used high-throughput sequencing technology to sequence and functionally annotate the chloroplast genome of Piptanthus concolor. The total length of P. concolor chloroplast genome is 152,115 bp with the typical quadripartite structure. It contains two inverted repeats (IRa and IRb) of 26,233 bp each, which are separated by a large single-copy (LSC) region of 82,024 bp and a small single-copy (SSC) region of 17,625 bp. The cp genome contained 111 genes, including 77 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on the whole chloroplast genome showed that P. concolor was closely related to Ammopiptanthus.

Project description:A new species of Vigna Savi, subgenus Ceratotropis (Piper) Verdc., Vignayadavii S.P. Gaikwad, R.D. Gore, S.D. Randive & K.U. Garad, sp. nov. is described and illustrated here. It is morphologically close to Vignadalzelliana (Kuntze) Verdc. but differs in its underground obligate cleistogamous flowers on positively geotropic branches, hairy calyx, small corolla, linear style beak and dimorphic seeds with shiny seed coat.

Discovery of two new species of Crotalaria (Leguminosae, Crotalarieae) from Western Ghats, India.

Project description:Two new species of Fabaceae-Papilionoideae are described and illustrated. Crotalaria suffruticosa from Karul Ghat region of Maharashtra is morphologically close to C. albida and C. epunctata. C. multibracteata from Panhala region of Maharashtra resembles C. vestita. C. suffruticosa differs from C. albida and C. epunctata in its habit, leaf, inflorescence, callosity, keel type, stigma, style morphology and number of seeds/pod. To test if the new species differ from their morphologically most similar species, we measured various traits and performed a Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This analysis shows that the new species differs from similar species in gross morphology for several diagnostic traits and showed correlations between the variables or distance among groups and estimated the contribution of each character. Phylogenetic analyses were also conducted based on nuclear (ITS) and plastid (matK) markers. The analyses revealed nucleotide differences between the new species and their close allies attributing to their distinctiveness. A map and key including all species of Crotalaria from Maharashtra state are provided. Conservation status of the two new species have also been assessed.

Rediscovery of Angiopteris tonkinensis (Marattiaceae) after 100 years, and its revision.

Project description:The border area between south-eastern Yunnan, China and northern Vietnam is one of the regions with richest biological diversity including that of the fern genus Angiopteris (Marattiaceae). Based on the analysis of morphology and DNA sequences of multiple chloroplast regions (atpB, rbcL, rps4-trnS spacer and trnL-F spacer), we revised Angiopteris tonkinensis (Hayata) J.M.Camus and proposed a new combination Angiopteris tamdaoensis (Hayata) J.Y.Xiang & T.Wang, comb. nov., which was previously regarded as a synonym of A. tonkinensis. We found support for a monophyletic Angiopteris including Protomarattia. This discovery adds two new distribution sites of A. tonkinensis, one in China (Malipo, Yunnan) and one in Vietnam (Quan Ba, Ha Giang). We suggest A. tonkinensis should be categorised as Critically Endangered (CR) species according to the criteria of IUCN.

A new sesquilignan glucoside from Uraria sinensis.

Project description:A new sesquilignan glucoside, urariasinoside A (1), together with eight known compounds, including two lignans, a sesquilignan, a dilignan, and four flavonoid derivatives were isolated from the aerial parts of Uraria sinensis. Their structures were determined on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analyses and comparison with literature data. Compound 1 was evaluated for in vitro cytotoxicity activity against HL-60, SMMC-7721, A549, MCF-7, SW480, and BEAS-2B cell lines.

Development of unigene-derived SSR markers from RNA-seq data of Uraria lagopodioides (Fabaceae) and their application in the genus Uraria Desv. (Fabaceae).

Project description:BackgroundUraria Desv. belongs to the tribe Desmodieae (Fabaceae), a group of legume plants, some of which have medicinal properties. However, due to a lack of genomic information, the interspecific relationships, genetic diversity, population genetics, and identification of functional genes within Uraria species are still unclear.ResultsUsing RNA-Seq, a total of 66,026 Uraria lagopodioides unigenes with a total sequence content of 52,171,904 bp were obtained via de novo assembly and annotated using GO, KEGG, and KOG databases. 17,740 SSRs were identified from a set of 66,026 unigenes. Cross-species amplification showed that 54 out of 150 potential unigene-derived SSRs were transferable in Uraria, of which 19 polymorphic SSRs were developed. Cluster analysis based on polymorphisms successfully distinguished seven Uraria species and revealed their interspecific relationships. Seventeen samples of seven Uraria species were clustered into two monophyletic clades, and phylogenetic relationships of Uraria species based on unigene-derived SSRs were consistent with classifications based on morphological characteristics.ConclusionsUnigenes annotated in the present study will provide new insights into the functional genomics of Uraria species. Meanwhile, the unigene-derived SSR markers developed here will be invaluable for assessing the genetic diversity and evolutionary history of Uraria and relatives.

Rediscovery of four narrow endemic Didymocarpus species (Gesneriaceae) from Mizoram, India, with revised species descriptions and lectotypifications.

Project description:Here we report the rediscovery of four endemic gesneriads from the state of Mizoram, India, after a span of 86 to 90 years since their last collection. The four species belong to the genus Didymocarpus Wall. and they are: D. adenocarpus, D. lineicapsa, D. parryorum, and D. wengeri. We present revised morphological descriptions, photographs, and designate lectotypes for D. parryorum and D. wengeri. During our study we came across several discrepancies between morphological characters assigned to these four species in the protologue and morphological characters present (or absent) in the type specimens and in plants recollected by us. We list these discrepancies in a section titled 'amendments to protologue'. Based on the high endemicity and critical conservation status of all the four rediscovered species, we suggest that floristic studies along with large-scale biogeographic studies should be prioritized in the Indo-Burmese region.

The rediscovery of Caryapoilanei (Juglandaceae) after 63 years reveals a new record from China.

Project description:Despite having been first published in 1941, Caryapoilanei (A.Chev.) J.-F.Leroy is only known from three collections in Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It has not been recollected since then and was long suspected to have become extinct through repeated deforestation events. Here, we report the rediscovery, and meanwhile the first new record in China, of this extremely rare gigantic hickory species at Yunnan province 63 years after its last collection in 1958. Three small patchy subpopulations were found with a total of about 50 adult trees having diameter at breast height (DBH) larger than 60 cm, together with some seedlings and saplings, but the fruit set was low. Based on new and fresh material, we present a revised morphological description of C.poilanei, and an updated distribution map for the species. In addition, we also provide a key for the hickories in China. Lastly, we suggest C.poilanei should be listed as a Critically Endangered (CR) species according to the latest IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.
