The complete mitochondrial genomes of Parabotia lijiangensis (Cypriniformes: Botiidae).

ABSTRACT: In this study, we obtained the 16,579 base pair (bp) mitochondrial DNA sequence of Parabotia lijiangensis. The mitogenome encodes 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, a control region, and has a nucleotide composition of A: 30.8%, T: 25.2%, G: 16.1%, and C: 27.9% (AT content: 56.0%). The complete mitogenome of P. lijiangensis provides essential and important DNA molecular data for further phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis of the Botiidae family.

Project description:Parabotia kiangsiensis is an endemic species of genus Parabotia in China. In this study, we sequenced the complete mito-genome of P. kiangsiensis. The genome is 16,592 base pair (bp) in length, encoding 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes and one non-coding control region (D-loop). The nucleotide composition is A: 30.66%, T: 25.13%, G: 16.3%, and C: 27.92% (AT content:55.79%). The complete mitogenome of P. kiangsiensis provides basic data for the genetic diversity conservation of this species.

Two complete mitochondrial genomes of Paraleucogobio fishes (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae).

Project description:Freshwater fishes in the genus Paraleucogobio include two species, Paraleucogobio notacanthus and Paraleucogobio strigatus. In this study, we determined complete mitochondrial genomes of P. notacanthus and P. strigatus to clarify their phylogenetic positions. The two mitochondrial genomes showed similar gene arrangements, codon use, gene overlaps or gene intervals with the length of 16,596 bp and 16,598 bp. Our phylogeny revealed that P. notacanthus and P. strigatus were nested within Gnathopogon fishes. The findings indicate that Paraleucogobio is a junior synonym of Gnathopogon.

Four complete mitochondrial genomes of Saurogobio fishes (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae).

Project description:In this study, we determined complete mitochondrial genomes of Saurogobio gracilicaudatus, S. xiangjiangensis, S. gymnocheilus, and S. lissilabris so that these data could contribute to reconstruct interspecific phylogenetic relationships within the genus Saurogobio. The four mitochondrial genomes showed A + T bias (55.2-57.0%) of base compositions with the length from 16,594 to 16,608 bp. Phylogenetic relationships among Saurogobio fishes and their close relatives showed that the genus Saurogobio was a monophyletic group and it could be divided into two major groups.

Seven fish complete mitochondrial genomes of the Gastromyzontidae in Southern China (Teleostei: Cypriniformes).

Project description:Family of Gastromyzontidae originates from China and Southeast Asia, which is widely distributed in the southern part of the Yangtze River. In this study, we sequenced seven fish complete mitogenomes from three of all 18 genera in the Gastromyzontidae on the Illumina HiSeq platform. Lengths of seven complete mitochondrial genome sequences varied from 16,554 to 16,574 bp, with an AT bias of 53.6-54.9%. Maximum-likelihood phylogenetic tree was reconstructed using the connected protein sequences of 13 protein-coding genes of 34 species of fish. The phylogeny revealed that the genera Gastromyzon, Sewellia, and Erromyzon were monophyletic, and other genera Beaufortia, Vanmanenia, Formosania, and Pseudogastromyzon were paraphyletic or polyphyletic. Phylogeny corrected the taxonomic status of Metahomaloptera omeiensis, which should be categorized under the family of Gastromyzontidae rather than Balitoridae, denoting the significance of this study to the overall fisheries research.

Three complete mitochondrial genomes of freshwater fishes in the genus Abbottina (Cypriniformes: Gobionidae).

Project description:Abbottina binhi has been misidentified as Abbottina rivularis in China for a long time. In this study, we determined three mitochondrial genomes of A. rivularis and A. binhi such that these data should contribute to molecular identifications of the two species. The size of new mitochondrial genomes was 16,609 or 16,599 bp with A + T bias of 55.7-56.5% in the base compositions. Our reconstructed phylogeny showed that A. rivularis and A. binhi formed a sister taxon relationship, and they together were a monophyletic group.

Molecular Phylogeny of the Opsariichthys Group (Teleostei: Cypriniformes) Based On Complete Mitochondrial Genomes.

Project description:Shih-Pin Huang, Feng-Yu Wang, and Tzi-Yuan Wang (2017) The complete mitochondrial genomes of 76 species from 43 genera under Cyprinidae sensu lato were collected to reassess the molecular phylogeny of Opsariichthyinae sensu Liao et al. 2011. The mitogenomes of three species, Candidia barbata, Opsariichthys evolans, and Opsariichthys pachycephalus, were newly sequenced. Phylogenetic trees were reconstructed based on 13 concatenated multiple protein-coding genes with two ribosomal RNA genes. The concatenated dataset provided a new perspective on systematics and relationships. Tree topologies show that a monophyletic group containing Parazacco, Candidia, Nipponocypris, Zacco, and Opsariichthys should belong to the Opsariichthys group. In addition, the present results also strongly support that Candidia and Nipponocypris should be regarded as distinct genera within the Opsariichthys group. Aphyocypris, Yaoshanicus, Nicholsicypris, and Pararasbora form a monophyletic group within Xenocyprididae, distinct from the Opsariichthys group. Furthermore, Hemigrammocypris is nested with four species of Metzia, a genus of ex-Cultrinae in Xenocyprididae. In addition, two major types of distinct stripes - longitudinal and vertical - were observed among species of the Opsariichthys group and were highly correlated with molecular phylogenetic relationships. Such types of vertical and longitudinal stripes presented in the Opsariichthys group might have originated in an ancestor species, after which distinct vertical stripes might have been lost among these cyprinids but retained in the Opsariichthys group.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Schizothorax davidi (Teleostei: Cypriniformes: Cyprinidae).

Project description:This study provides a mitochondrial complete genome of Schizothorax davidi. The complete genome is 16,576 bp in length with an A + T content of 54.9%, which contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that S. davidi is closely related to Schizothorax lissolabiatus. These results contribute to explore the adaptation strategy of S. davidi on the conditions of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

Project description:Mitochondrial genomes of two individuals of Tachanovsky's gudgeon Ladislavia taczanowskii have been determined on the basis of Sanger dideoxy sequencing. The gene compositions of two genomes contain 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 1 control region with the same length 16,614 bp. The phylogenetic tree reveals that the monotypic genus Ladislavia is a sister group of the subfamily Gobioninae within the family Gobionidae.
