Data for photoluminescence spectra of natural Cr³⁺-doped MgAl₂O₄ spinel during order-disorder transition.

ABSTRACT: Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of natural Cr³⁺ doped MgAl₂O₄ spinel from Tanzania were taken during its order-disorder transition (ODT) process. Samples were changed their disordered degree by quenching treatment. PL spectra were taken at the liquid nitrogen (LN) temperature (∼77 K) using a 532 nm laser excitation. Spectra from different states were compared with each other and R-line and N-line ratio was used to illustrate the disordered degree of spinel during ODT process. It can be used as a reference for other similar researches, such as spinel PL characterization of the other members of this group, ordered degree of synthetic spinel single crystal or ceramics materials, thermal history of spinel, and non-destructive identification of natural and heated spinel gemstones, spinel original distinguishing, further PL spectra analysis and XRD relationship research.

Deep Red Photoluminescence from Cr3+ in Fluorine-Doped Lithium Aluminate Host Material.

Project description:Deep red phosphors have attracted much attention for their applications in lighting, medical diagnosis, health monitoring, agriculture, etc. A new phosphor host material based on fluorine-doped lithium aluminate (ALFO) was proposed and deep red emission from Cr3+ in this host material was demonstrated. Cr3+ in ALFO was excited by blue (~410 nm) and green (~570 nm) rays and covered the deep red to near-infrared region from 650 nm to 900 nm with peaks around 700 nm. ALFO was a fluorine-doped form of the spinel-type compound LiAl5O8 with slightly Li-richer compositions. The composition depended on the preparation conditions, and the contents of Li and F tended to decrease with preparation temperature, such as Al4.69Li1.31F0.28O7.55 at 1100 °C, Al4.73Li1.27F0.17O7.65 at 1200 °C, and Al4.83Li1.17F0.10O7.78 at 1300 °C. The Rietveld analysis revealed that ALFO and LiAl5O8 were isostructural with respect to the spinel-type lattice and in a disorder-order relationship in the arrangement of Li+ and Al3+. The emission peak of Cr3+ in LiAl5O8 resided at 716 nm, while Cr3+ in ALFO showed a rather broad doublet peak with the tops at 708 nm and 716 nm when prepared at 1200 °C. The broad emission peak indicated that the local environment around Cr3+ in ALFO was distorted, which was also supported by electron spin resonance spectra, suggesting that the local environment around Cr3+ in ALFO was more inhomogeneous than expected from the diffraction-based structural analysis. It was demonstrated that even a small amount of dopant (in this case fluorine) could affect the local environment around luminescent centers, and thus the luminescence properties.

Enhancing Photoluminescence Spectra for Doped ZnO Using Neutron Irradiation.

Project description:This study investigates the effect of neutron irradiation on zinc oxide (ZnO) crystal bulk substrates that have been ion-implanted with gadolinium (Gd) and iron (Fe) in different concentrations in the Zn-polar (0001) face of the crystal to produce Gd:ZnO and Fe:ZnO crystal bulk samples. The neutron beams of the 241Am-Be flux were moderated to be 7 × 104 n/s cm2 by a 4.5 cm-thick wax. The implanted face was left to face the neutron beams on top of the wax for 90 h. The results show that the nuclear reaction between thermal neutrons and the implanted material produced a large amount of heat, which significantly enhanced the photoluminescence spectra of the crystal bulk surface after the surface damage caused by ion implantation. This study provides insights into the benefits of having a doped material in the ZnO crystal after irradiation and highlights the potential of neutron irradiation as a method for enhancing the properties of implanted crystal bulk substrates.

Hydrogenation of CO to olefins over a supported iron catalyst on MgAl2O4 spinel: effects of the spinel synthesis method.

Project description:In the process of CO hydrogenation to olefins by the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTO), the support is a key factor in the activity, selectivity, and thermal and chemical stability of the catalysts, and magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) has recently been reported to be very effective. In this work, three methods, namely, citric acid solution combustion (MAC), EDTA sol-gel (MAG) and NH3-coprecipitation (MAP) have been employed to prepare the spinel with detailed characterization of the structure, specific surface area, porosity, and alkalinity properties of both the as-synthesized spinel and the supported catalysts. The results showed that MAC and MAG possessed stronger basicity with more homogeneous particle sizes and narrower distribution of the pore size due to the formation of the metal-nitrate-chelate-complex. This led to a large quantity of gas being released during calcination, however, stronger interactions between the active phase and MAC resulted in lower CO conversion. The catalyst supported on MAP (CMAP) exhibited the highest CO conversion, the highest selectivity of lower olefins, the shortest induction period of reaction, and the lowest AFS chain growth probability; thus, MAP was suggested as an applicable synthetic method. Based on the CMAP catalyst, the effects of the operational conditions were investigated and a 200 hour stability test was carried out with satisfactory performance.

The Impact of Cr3+ Doping on Temperature Sensitivity Modulation in Cr3+ Doped and Cr3+, Nd3+ Co-doped Y3Al5O12, Y3Al2Ga3O12, and Y3Ga5O12 Nanothermometers.

Project description:A new approach to enhance the sensitivity of transition metal ion based nanocrystalline luminescent thermometer is presented. It was shown that the increase of Cr3+ concentration in three types of garnet host namely Y3Al5O12, Y3Ga5O12, and Y3Al2Ga3O12 allows for significant enhancement of their performance in non-contact thermometry. This phenomenon is related to the weakening of the crystal field strength due to enlargement of average Cr3+-O2- distance at higher Cr3+ concentrations. By increasing Cr3+ concentration from 0.6 to 30%, the sensitivity increased by over one order of magnitude from S = 0.2%/°C to S = 2.2%/°C at 9°C in Y3Al2Ga3O12 nanocrystals. Moreover, it was found that due to the Cr3+ → Nd3+ energy transfer in the Cr3+, Nd3+ co-doped system, the usable Cr3+ concentration, for which its emission can be detected, is limited to 10% while the sensitivity at -50°C was doubled (from 1.3%/°C for Y3Al2Ga3O12:10%Cr3+ to 2.2%/°C Y3Al2Ga3O12:10%Cr3+, 1%Nd3+ nanocrystals).

Research on the photoluminescence properties of Cu2+-doped perovskite CsPbCl3 quantum dots.

Project description:CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, and I) quantum dots (QDs) and Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs with different Cu-to-Pb molar ratios were synthesized via a solvent-based thermal synthesis method. The photoluminescence (PL) properties of these Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs were also investigated in this study. The results showed that with the increase in the Cl- concentration the surface defects of CsPb(Cl/Br)3 QDs increased, which resulted in an increase in the non-radiative recombination of excitons and weakened the PL intensity. Moreover, Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs maintained the cubic crystal structure of the initial phases. Owing to the doping of Cu2+ ions, the surface defects of CsPbCl3 QDs were effectively eliminated, which facilitated the excitonic recombination via a radiative pathway. The PL quantum yields (PLQYs) of Cu2+-doped CsPbCl3 QDs were increased to 51%, showing great photostability. From the results, it is believed that Cu:CsPbCl3 QDs can be widely used in optoelectronic devices.

Ferroelectric order driven Eu3+ photoluminescence in BaZrxTi1-xO3 perovskite.

Project description:The ability to tune and enhance the properties of luminescent materials is essential for enlarging their application potential. Recently, the modulation of the photoluminescence emission of lanthanide-doped ferroelectric perovskites by applying an electric field has been reported. Herein, we show that the ferroelectric order and, more generally the polar order, has a direct effect on the photoluminescence of Eu3+ in the model BaZrxTi1-xO3 perovskite even in the absence of an external field. The dipole arrangement evolves with increasing x from long-range ferroelectric order to short-range order typical of relaxors until the non-polar paraelectric BaZrO3 is achieved. The cooperative polar interactions existing in the lattice (x < 1) promote the off-center displacement of the Eu3+ ion determining a change of the lanthanide site symmetry and, consequently, an abrupt variation of the photoluminescence emission with temperature. Each type of polar order is characterized by a distinct photoluminescence behaviour.

Photoluminescence properties of a ScBO3:Cr3+ phosphor and its applications for broadband near-infrared LEDs.

Project description:The rapid extension of solid state lighting technologies offers the possibility to develop broadband near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted LEDs (pc-LEDs) as novel NIR light sources. In this paper, a new NIR-emitting phosphor ScBO3:Cr3+ was synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction method. Phase structure, spectroscopic properties, luminescent lifetime, quantum yield, emitter concentration influences and thermal quenching behavior of ScBO3:Cr3+, as well as its applications for NIR pc-LEDs, were systematically investigated. ScBO3:Cr3+ phosphors exhibit a broad absorption band ranging from 400 to 530 nm, which matches well with the characteristic emission of the blue LED chip. Moreover, Cr3+ ions occupy the Sc3+ sites with relatively low crystal field strength in the ScBO3 host, and therefore ScBO3:Cr3+ phosphors show intense broadband emission peaking at ∼800 nm upon excitation at 460 nm, originating from spin-allowed 4T2 → 4A2 transition of Cr3+ ions. The optimum Cr3+ concentration was determined to be ∼2 mol% with a quantum yield of ∼65%. A broadband NIR pc-LED prototype device was fabricated by the combination of ScBO3:Cr3+ phosphors and a blue LED chip, which showed a maximum NIR light output power of ∼26 mW and a corresponding energy conversion efficiency of ∼7%. The results indicate the great potential of ScBO3:Cr3+ phosphors for applications in broadband NIR pc-LEDs.

High-Performance Giant Dielectric Properties of Cr3+/Ta5+ Co-Doped TiO2 Ceramics.

Project description:The effects of the sintering temperature on microstructures, electrical properties, and dielectric response of 1%Cr3+/Ta5+ co-doped TiO2 (CrTTO) ceramics prepared using a solid-state reaction method were studied. The mean grain size increased with an increasing sintering temperature range of 1300-1500 °C. The dielectric permittivity of CrTTO ceramics sintered at 1300 °C was very low (ε' ∼198). Interestingly, a low loss tangent (tanδ ∼0.03-0.06) and high ε' (∼1.61-1.9 × 104) with a temperature coefficient less than ≤ ±15% in a temperature range of -60 to 150 °C were obtained. The results demonstrated a higher performance property of the acceptor Cr3+/donor Ta5+ co-doped TiO2 ceramics compared to the Ta5+-doped TiO2 and Cr3+-doped TiO2 ceramics. According to a first-principles study, high-performance giant dielectric properties (HPDPs) did not originate from electron-pinned defect dipoles. By impedance spectroscopy (IS), it was suggested that the giant dielectric response was induced by interfacial polarization at the internal interfaces rather than by the formation of complex defect dipoles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirmed the existence of Ti3+, resulting in the formation of semiconducting parts in the bulk ceramics. Low tanδ and excellent temperature stability were due to the high resistance of the insulating layers with a very high potential barrier of ∼2.0 eV.

Transition behaviors of γ-β0/β in V-, Cr-, Mn-doped TiAl alloys.

Project description:The behavior of γ-β/β0 phase transition in TiAl alloy doped with β stabilizers (V, Cr, Mn) are studied by using the first principles method. It is found that alloying addition as well as anharmonic lattice vibration and disordered atomic occupation contributes to enhance the stability of cubic structure and accordingly introduce the disordered β phase into the high-temperature microstructure. The formation of low-temperature β0 phase originates from not only the stabilization of cubic structure but also the destabilization of tetragonal structure. In particular, the latter is the main reason for the premature precipitation of the hard-brittle β0 phase in the room-temperature microstructure at low nominal doping concentrations. We also find a special doping region in which the γ and the β phases are stable, while the β0 phase is unstable. The existence of this region provides an opportunity for the regulation of the contents of β and β0 phases.

Power dependent photoacoustic and photoluminescence studies on a Ho3+/Yb3+ doped Y2O3 phosphor.

Project description:The Ho3+/Yb3+ doped Y2O3 phosphor samples were synthesized through a combustion method and then were annealed at 800 °C, 1000 °C, and 1200 °C. The cubic phase of the synthesized samples was confirmed by XRD analysis. The upconversion (UC) & photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopic studies were done on prepared samples and both spectra are compared. The samples have shown intense green upconversion emission at 551 nm due to the 5S2 → 5I8 transition of Ho3+ ion along with other bands. The maximum emission intensity is obtained for the sample annealed at 1000 °C for 2 hours. The authors have also measured the lifetime corresponding to 5S2 → 5I8 transition and found that lifetime values follow the trend of upconversion intensity. The maximum lifetime of 224 μs is observed for the sample annealed at 1000 °C. A photoacoustic cell & a pre-amplifier was fabricated and optimized for maximum sensitivity of the system. The PA signal was found to increase with increase of excitation power within the studied range, while UC emission was found to saturate after a certain pump power. The increase in PA signal is due to the increase in non-radiative transitions in the sample. The wavelength-dependent photoacoustic spectrum of sample has shown absorption bands around 445, 536, 649 and 945 (970) nm with maximum absorption at 945 (970) nm. This indicates its potential for photo-thermal therapy using infrared excitation.
