Adrenocortical attunement, reactivity, and potential genetic correlates among parent-daughter dyads from low-income families.

ABSTRACT: Examining the multitude of influences on the development of adolescent stress responses, especially among low-income families, is a critical and understudied topic in the field. The current study examined cortisol attunement between adolescent girls and parents (mostly mothers) from predominantly low-income, single parent, ethnic minority families before and after an in-laboratory disagreement discussion task. The sample consisted of 118 adolescents (M_age = 13.79 years, 76.3% ethnic minorities, 23.7% European Americans) and primary caregivers (M_age = 40.62 years; Mdn yearly income = $24,000; 43.2% single parents; 50% living below poverty line). We investigated oxytocin receptor (OXTR rs53576) gene variations as a potential contributor to attunement within the dyad. Results showed that parents and adolescents showed stress system attunement across the disagreement task, but that parent and adolescent oxytocin receptor genotype did not impact attunement. Future studies should detail biological factors that contribute to the calibration of stress response systems of adolescents across a variety of samples, particularly those experiencing a combination of stressors.

Project description:BackgroundParent feeding styles have been linked to child weight status across multiple studies. However, to our knowledge, the link between feeding styles and children's dietary quality, a more proximal outcome, has not been investigated.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to examine the relation between parent feeding styles and dietary quality of Head Start preschoolers' dinner meals.DesignThe amount of food served and consumed by children was measured by using a standardized digital photography method during 3 in-home dinner observations of low-income minority families in Houston, Texas. Trained dietitians entered food served and consumed into the Nutrient Data System for Research 2009 for nutrient analysis. Overall dietary quality of the food served and consumed at dinner was evaluated by using the Healthy Eating Index 2010 (HEI-2010). Parent feeding style was assessed with the use of the Caregiver's Feeding Style Questionnaire (CFSQ). On the basis of a parent's level of demandingness and responsiveness to his or her child during feeding, the CFSQ categorizes parent feeding into 4 styles: authoritative (high demandingness and high responsiveness), authoritarian (high demandingness and low responsiveness), indulgent (low demandingness and high responsiveness), or uninvolved (low demandingness and low responsiveness).ResultsFor the overall sample, the mean ± SD HEI score for dinner served was 44.2 ± 8.4, and the mean ± SD HEI score for dinner consumed was 43.4 ± 7.0. In the fully adjusted model, ANCOVA indicated that the authoritative parent feeding style was associated with significantly higher child dietary quality compared with the authoritarian feeding style (mean ± SEE HEI consumed-authoritative 45.5 ± 0.9; authoritarian: 41.9 ± 0.7; P = 0.001).ConclusionsParent feeding style contributes to the overall dietary quality of children, and among low-income minority preschoolers an authoritative feeding style was associated with the highest dietary quality of the 4 feeding styles. Interventions to promote feeding practices that contribute to authoritative feeding are needed to improve the dietary quality of preschool children at dinner. Project description:IntroductionIt is unclear what role daughters play in the decision-making process regarding HPV vaccination. Therefore, we explored the impact of HPV vaccination intention among parents and their 12-13 year-old daughters on HPV vaccination uptake.MethodsIn February 2014 parents/guardians and their 12-13 year-old daughters were invited to complete a questionnaire about socio-psychological determinants of the decision-making process regarding HPV vaccination. Vaccination status of the daughter was retrieved from the national vaccination database after the last possible vaccination date in 2014. The association between HPV vaccination uptake and intention, and determinants of intention, was jointly assessed using a generalized structural equation model, stratified by origin of parents (Dutch versus non-Dutch).ResultsIn total, 273 Dutch parent-daughter dyads and 165 non-Dutch dyads were analyzed for this study. HPV vaccination uptake was 90% (246/273) and 84% (139/165) in the Dutch and non-Dutch group, respectively. In the Dutch group, high parental intention (β = 2.3, 95%CI 1.2-3.3) and high daughters' intention (β = 1.5, 95%CI 0.41-2.6) were significantly associated with HPV vaccination uptake. In the non-Dutch group, high daughters' intention (β = 1.2, 95%CI 0.16-2.2) was significantly associated with HPV vaccination, but high parental intention was not (β = 0.52, 95%CI -0.47-1.5). Attitude was the most prominent socio-psychological determinant associated with vaccination intention among all groups.ConclusionIn the non-Dutch group, only daughters' intention was significantly associated with HPV vaccination uptake, whereas in the Dutch group both the parents' and the daughters' intention were significantly associated with uptake. The role of the child in the decision-making process might need to be taken into account when developing new interventions focused on increasing HPV vaccination uptake, especially among individuals of non-Dutch origin.
