Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a pleiotropic ciliopathy caused by dysfunction of primary cilia. More than half of BBS patients carry mutations in one of eight genes encoding for subunits of a protein complex, the BBSome, which mediates trafficking of ciliary cargoes.
