Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the research environment and motivation of researchers in Japan.

ABSTRACT: The environment surrounding researchers has changed significantly in the face of COVID-19 restrictions. An online self-reported questionnaire was completed by 10,557 participants between June 15 and 19, 2020. The impact on work/research activities and harassments under COVID-19 conditions was higher among researchers (1963) compared to non-researchers (8572). We further examined the effect of COVID-19 restrictions on 300 researchers. Women were significantly more likely to report being harassed than males. The overall "decrease in research motivation" was higher in women. The restrictions on research activities because of COVID-19 restrictions caused future anxiety and a decrease in research motivation.

Perception of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on dental researchers.

Project description:Background/objectivesHistorical evidence shows a gender-based disproportionate effect of pandemics across different populations. In 2020, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic began spreading its devastating effects worldwide. The goal of the present study was to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on research productivity, work-life arrangements, and mental health of dental professionals worldwide with focus on gender differences.MethodsA 38-item survey, concerning demographics, career stage, employer support, family structure, mental health, and relationships, was distributed to 7692 active members of the International Association for Dental Research. Bivariate associations between independent variables and the primary outcome variable were tested using Spearman's correlation test. A logistic regression model was used to assess the simultaneous, independent associations between each variable and researcher productivity.ResultsA total of 722 responses were obtained, indicating a 9.4% response rate. Higher productivity was reported by male respondents (p = 0.021), and by those in senior career stages (p = 0.001). Institutional support was associated with higher productivity (p < 0.0001). Lower productivity was reported by younger researchers (p = 0.003). Remote work negatively affected productivity (p < 0.0001) and female respondents reported working more hours, regardless of work location (p = 0.004). Poor mental health was associated with low productivity (p < 0.0001).ConclusionsOur results showed that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected dental professionals' perceived productivity and mental health around the globe. Younger individuals and women were disproportionally affected, and institutional support had a significant influence to mitigate effects of the pandemic for dental researchers.

Tiered restrictions for COVID-19 in England: knowledge, motivation and self-reported behaviour.

Project description:ObjectivesTo test whether public knowledge and confidence in one's understanding of the local restrictions, motivation to adhere to local restrictions, and self-reported behaviour (going out for exercise, to work, socially) differed according to tier level.Study designCross-sectional, nationally representative, online survey of 1728 participants living in England (data collection: 26 to 28 October 2020).MethodsWe conducted logistic regression analyses to investigate whether knowledge of restrictions, confidence in knowledge of restrictions, motivation to adhere to restrictions, and self-reported behaviour were associated with personal characteristics and tier.ResultsBetween 81% (tier 2) and 89% (tier 3) of participants correctly identified which tier they lived in. Knowledge of specific restrictions was variable. 73% were confident that they understood which tier was in place in their local area, whereas 71% were confident they understood the guidance in their local area. Confidence was associated with being older and living in a less deprived area. 73% were motivated to adhere to restrictions in their local area. Motivation was associated with being female and older. People living in tiers with greater restrictions were less likely to report going out to meet people from another household socially; reported rates of going out for exercise and for work did not differ.ConclusionsAlthough recognition of local tier level was high, knowledge of specific guidance for tiers was variable. There was some indication that nuanced guidance (e.g. behaviour allowed in some settings but not others) was more poorly understood than guidance which was absolute (i.e. behaviour is either allowed or not allowed).

Impact of COVID-19 restrictions on alcohol consumption behaviours.

Project description:BackgroundWe aimed to evaluate how coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions had altered individual's drinking behaviours, including consumption, hangover experiences, and motivations to drink, and changing levels of depression and anxiety.MethodWe conducted an online cross-sectional self-report survey. Whole group analysis compared pre- versus post-COVID restrictions. A correlation coefficient matrix evaluated the associations between all outcome scores. Self-report data was compared with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) scores from the 2014 Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey. Multiple linear modelling (MLM) was calculated to identify factors associated with increasing AUDIT scores and post-restriction AUDIT scores.ResultsIn total, 346 individuals completed the survey, of which 336 reported drinking and were therefore analysed. After COVID-19 restrictions 23.2% of respondents reported an increased AUDIT score, and 60.1% a decreased score. AUDIT score change was positively correlated with change in depression (P < 0.01, r = 0.15), anxiety (P < 0.01, r = 0.15) and drinking to cope scores (P < 0.0001, r = 0.35). MLM revealed that higher AUDIT scores were associated with age, mental illness, lack of a garden, self-employed or furloughed individuals, a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis and smoking status.ConclusionsCOVID-19 restrictions decreased alcohol consumption for the majority of individuals in this study. However, a small proportion increased their consumption; this related to drinking to cope and increased depression and anxiety.

Have restrictions on human mobility impacted suicide rates during the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan?

Project description:During the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, various measures have been implemented to prevent the spread of infection, including restrictions on human mobility. A dynamic fluctuation in the number of suicides has been observed during this period. The question is whether the increase/decrease in suicides during the pandemic is related to changes in human mobility. To answer the same, we estimated incidence rate ratios (IRR) of suicide for changes in human mobility using the relative number of suicides by month from March 2020 to September 2021, based on the same months in 2019 as reference. The IRR of suicide during the pandemic were significantly lower in the months when mobility decreased-in both the previous and current month-than in the months when mobility was stable; the IRR of suicide were statistically higher in the months with increased mobility compared with the stable months. The burden from a decrease in one's mobility, which might lead to an increase in suicide, may not occur immediately, as seen in the delayed effects of unemployment. It may be important to investigate people's mental health and stress levels after pandemic restrictions were relaxed. The findings may help practitioners and families consider the timing of intervention.

Understanding impacts of COVID-19 restrictions on glycemic control for patients with diabetes in Japan.

Project description:ObjectiveThis study evaluated the changes in the status of glycemic control and lipid management in patients with diabetes under COVID-19 containment restrictions, in order to better understand the impacts of events causing lifestyle restrictions. Patient characteristics with worsened glycemic control were also assessed.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective and observational cohort study using the electronic health records of 5,169 patients with diabetes seeking medical care in two healthcare centers. Laboratory test results including glycemic and lipid goal attainment rates were compared between pre-COVID-19 (January to December 2019) and the first wave of COVID-19 (February to June 2020). Multiple regression models were used to evaluate the association between glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) at baseline and during the first wave with covariates such as concomitant medications and comorbidities.ResultsThe HbA1c goal achievement rate improved significantly from 39.0% to 43.1% (p < 0.0001) overall, and more patients reached their glycemic target during COVID-19 restrictions. No significant changes were observed in lipid control. An indexed change in HbA1c level showed that glycemic control improved in 2,230 patients and worsened in 1,619 patients. Administration of insulin, GLP-1, and sulfonylureas were each identified as factors correlated with elevated HbA1c, during the first wave of COVID-19.ConclusionAlthough the glycemic control in patients with diabetes improved overall under COVID-19 restrictions, those on insulin, GLP-1, or sulfonylureas worsened. These findings suggest the need to better understand what drives differences in glycemic control to better support people with diabetes for future epidemiological outbreaks.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s40200-023-01302-5.

Propensity-matched comparisons of factors negatively affecting research activities during the COVID-19 pandemic between nursing researchers working in academic and clinical settings in Japan.

Project description:AimTo determine the factors associated with reduced research activities during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 by comparing nursing researchers working in academic and clinical settings.MethodsThis was a secondary analysis of data collected by the Japan Academy of Nursing Sciences, which conducted a cross-sectional online survey when the pandemic began. We included respondents who worked in either academic or clinical settings and responded that the pandemic negatively affected their research activities. First, we computed a propensity score (PS) using a logistic regression model. Then we performed a one-to-one ratio matching between the groups based on the PS to control imbalances between the groups. We identified the factors negatively affecting research activities and who to consult about research concerns by comparing the groups using Chi-square or Fisher's exact tests.ResultsThere were 1,532 participants, with a response rate of 16.1%. After PS matching, 214 participants (107 for each group) were included. We identified three significant factors associated with reduced research activities: (i) time required for learning new information and communication technology (ICT) skills; (ii) time required for supporting colleagues with ICT issues; and (iii) time required for preparing and evaluating teaching materials. Approximately 20% of our participants in both settings had nobody to consult regarding research concerns.ConclusionWe found that the time spent on ICT-related issues negatively affected the research activities of nursing researchers when the pandemic began in Japan. In such an emergency, nursing researchers needed an opportunity to share their difficulties as a part of a support service.

Impact of COVID-19 Restrictions in Childbirth and Puerperium: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Project description:Introduction (1): The COVID-19 pandemic led to changes in healthcare during pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium. The objective of this study was to know the impact of visit restrictions, PCR performance and use of masks on delivery and puerperium care. Methods (2): A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out. A survey was used to assess the impact of COVID-19-related measures on women who had given birth in hospitals in the Region of Murcia, Spain, between March 2020 and February 2022. Results (3): The final sample size was 434 women. The average scores were 4.27 for dimension 1 (Visit restrictions), 4.15 for dimension 2 (PCR testing) and 3.98 for dimension 3 (Mask use). More specifically, we found that the restriction of visits was considered a positive measure for the establishment of the mother-newborn bond (mean score 4.37) and that the use of masks at the time of delivery should have been made more flexible (mean score 4.7). Conclusions (4): The policy of restricting hospital visits during the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has been considered beneficial by mothers, who expressed that they did not feel lonely during their hospital stay.

The impact of COVID-19 mobility restrictions on dengue transmission in urban areas.

Project description:During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments have been forced to implement mobility restrictions to slow down the spread of SARS-CoV-2. These restrictions have also played a significant role in controlling the spread of other diseases, including those that do not require direct contact between individuals for transmission, such as dengue. In this study, we investigate the impact of human mobility on the dynamics of dengue transmission in a large metropolis. We compare data on the spread of the disease over a nine-year period with data from 2020 when strict mobility restrictions were in place. This comparison enables us to accurately assess how mobility restrictions have influenced the rate of dengue propagation and their potential for preventing an epidemic year. We observed a delay in the onset of the disease in some neighborhoods and a decrease in cases in the initially infected areas. Using a predictive model based on neural networks capable of estimating the potential spread of the disease in the absence of mobility restrictions for each neighborhood, we quantified the change in the number of cases associated with social distancing measures. Our findings with this model indicate a substantial reduction of approximately 72% in dengue cases in the city of Fortaleza throughout the year 2020. Additionally, using an Interrupted Time Series (ITS) model, we obtained results showing a strong correlation between the prevention of dengue and low human mobility, corresponding to a reduction of approximately 45% of cases. Despite the differences, both models point in the same direction, suggesting that urban mobility is a factor strongly associated with the pattern of dengue spread.
