Complete mitochondrial genome of Halocynthia hilgendorfi ritteri (Pyuridae) from Korea.

ABSTRACT: Halocynthia hilgendorfi ritteri is an ascidian distributed on the coast of Geoje Island in Korea and found on rocks. The mitochondrial genome of Halocynthia hilgendorfi ritteri consists of 15,181 bp with 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNAs, 23 transfer RNA genes. The overall base composition of the complete genome is 22.94% A, 43.32% T, 25.72% G, and 8.02% C, with a high A + T content of 66.26%.

Project description:Halocynthia aurantium (Stolidobranchia: Pyuridae) is a species of tunicate of commercial value that is commonly found in the northern Pacific Ocean and in the Bering Sea. Here, we determined the complete mitogenome of sea peach H. aurantium using 150 PE high-throughput sequencing. The assembled mitogenome is 14,979 bp in length (overall A + T contents 56.2%), and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 21 transfer RNAs, two ribosomal RNAs. Phylogenetic analysis of the mitogenome sequence of H. aurantium fully resolved it in a clade with H. roretzi. These data and results will be useful for future studies on the evolution of the Halocynthia and the Pyuridae.

Complete DNA sequence of the mitochondrial genome of the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi (Chordata, Urochordata).

Project description:The complete nucleotide sequence of the 14,771-bp-long mitochondrial (mt) DNA of a urochordate (Chordata)-the ascidian Halocynthia roretzi-was determined. All the Halocynthia mt-genes were found to be located on a single strand, which is rich in T and G rather than in A and C. Like nematode and Mytilus edulis mtDNAs, that of Halocynthia encodes no ATP synthetase subunit 8 gene. However, it does encode an additional tRNA gene for glycine (anticodon TCT) that enables Halocynthia mitochondria to use AGA and AGG codons for glycine. The mtDNA carries an unusual tRNA(Met) gene with a TAT anticodon instead of the usual tRNA(Met)(CAT) gene. As in other metazoan mtDNAs, there is not any long noncoding region. The gene order of Halocynthia mtDNA is completely different from that of vertebrate mtDNAs except for tRNA(His)-tRNA(Ser)(GCU), suggesting that evolutionary change in the mt-gene structure is much accelerated in the urochordate line compared with that in vertebrates. The amino acid sequences of Halocynthia mt-proteins deduced from their gene sequences are quite different from those in other metazoans, indicating that the substitution rate in Halocynthia mt-protein genes is also accelerated.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Gloydius saxatilis (Viperidae: Crotalinae) from Korea.

Project description:In this study, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genome of Gloydius saxatilis using Illumina next-generation sequencing. The total length of the mitogenome was 17,223 bp, and contained 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), two non-coding control regions (CRs), and the origin of light (OL)-strand replication. The genome structure and order of the genes were similar to other Crotalinae species. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 13 concatenated PCGs indicated that G. saxatilis closely related to G. intermedius and, G. shedaoensis.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Acanthochitona defilippii (Polyplacophora: Chitonida) from South Korea.

Project description:The chiton (Polyplacophora) occupies a significant position in molluscan evolutionary history as one of the most primitive groups within the phylum Mollusca. Acanthochitona defilippii (Tapparone-Canefri 1874) (Chitonida: Acanthochitonidae) is a commonly found intertidal chiton species in South Korea. In this study, we characterized the complete mitochondrial genome of A. defilippii (14,999 bp long), comprising 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and an A + T rich region (166 bp). The base composition is as follows: 31.82% for A, 11.63% for C, 16.69% for G, and 39.86% for T. We reconstructed a maximum likelihood (ML) tree to elucidate phylogenetic relationships among the eight chitonid families using the nucleotide sequences of all PCGs. The ML tree revealed that A. defilippii clustered with Acanthochitona avicula (BP 100) within the family Acanthochitonidae. Acanthochitonidae formed a sister group with Mopaliidae. The results could provide a valuable understanding the phylogenetic relationships of chitonid species.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Ricania shantungensis (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) in Korea.

Project description:In this study, we have sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of Ricania shantungensis (Hemiptera: Ricaniidae) for the first time. The circular mitogenome of R. shantungensis was 15,789 bp, including 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNAs, and a single control region of 1,363 bp. Its AT ratio was 74.6%. According to the phylogenetic tree, R. shantungensis was clustered with the genus Ricania.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Buccinum bayani (Gastropoda: Buccininae) in Korea.

Project description:This study is the first to report the complete 15,262 base pair mitochondrial genome of Buccinum bayani, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a control region (D-loop). The overall base composition of the complete genome is A (29.87%), T (39.11%), G (15.86%), and C (15.16%), with a high AT content of 68.98%. Phylogenetic analysis showed that B. bayani was most closely related to B. undatum. The mitogenome of B. bayani will provide helpful information to further our phylogenetic and evolutionary understanding of the family Buccininae.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Chironomus flaviplumus (Diptera: Chironomidae) collected in Korea.

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of Chironomus flaviplumus was sequenced. The circular mitochondrial genome is 15,739 bp and consists of 13 protein-coding, two ribosomal RNAs, and 22 transfer RNA genes (GenBank accession no. MW770891). Results of phylogenetic analysis indicate that the species clustered with other species of the family Chironomidae. This study is helpful to the identification of C. flaviplumus larvae, which is difficult to be identified by morphology.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the Asian badger Meles leucurus (Mustelidae) from Korea.

Project description:The mitogenome of the Asian badger Meles leucurus from Korea is a circular molecule of 16,529 bp, consisting of a control region and a conserved set of 37 genes containing 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes (12S rRNA and 16S rRNA). The mitogenome of M. leucurus is AT-biased, with a nucleotide composition of 33.1% A, 27.9% T, 25.4% C, and 13.5% G. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the badger M. leucurus from Korea is well grouped with that from China, forming a sister clade to M. meles from Japan.

Complete mitochondrial genome of Asiagomphus coreanus (Odonata: Gomphidae), which is endemic to South Korea.

Project description:Asiagomphus coreanus (Doi & Okumura, 1937) belongs to the family Gomphidae in the order Odonata, and has been listed as an endemic species in South Korea. Here, we assembled its complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) which is 15,649 base pairs (bp) in length. The A. coreanus mitogeneome consists of a typical set of genes [13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes] and one major non-coding A + T-rich region which is 846 bp long. The gene arrangement of the species was identical to that of commonly found in the majority of the insects. Phylogenetic analyses using the concatenated sequences of 13 PCGs and two rRNA genes of the representative odonate mitogenomes by Bayesian inference method revealed that A. coreanus belongs to the Gomphidae family with a strong nodal support (Bayesian posterior probabilities = 1). Unlike previous phylogenetic analyses (with regards to suborder relationships) the suborder Anisozygoptera-which was represented by a single species, Epiophlebia superstes-was placed as the sister to Zygoptera.
