Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) is a commercially and culturally important species to the people that live along the northern Pacific Ocean coast. There are two main sockeye salmon ecotypes-the ocean-going (anadromous) ecotype and the fresh-water ecotype known as kokanee.
