Project description:This study examines the hypothesis that social capital can be a foundation for community disaster resilience with an analysis of empirical findings from the August 2018 earthquake recovery on Gili Trawangan, Indonesia, a globally known coastal tourism destination. Positive links between community social capital and community disaster resilience are hypothesized, but the extent to which an iterative and interdependent relationship is co-shaping both is less understood. Social capital can enable collective action, providing self-organized social, psychological, financial and material resources following a disaster, that may otherwise need to be provided externally. In turn, disasters create collective action problems where collective response and recovery process are needed, creating an institutional space where the degree of usefulness, meaning and function of social capital can be shaped, recognized and drawn upon, often where external aid is insufficient. These relationships can be observed following disasters, because individuals and communities are often linked through emotive and meaningful sequences of common experiences, actions and activities. Findings descriptively detail Gili Trawangan's response and recovery process through the events and activities that occurred, and are then theoretically analyzed with a social capital framework including bonding (within group), bridging (between group) and linking (across power and institutional) ties. Three conclusions can be summarized. (1) Community social capital and disaster resilience are iteratively co-shaped through collective experiences, actions and activities. (2) Understanding context is critical for understanding if and to what degree this relationship exists. (3) The mechanism through which social capital enhances resilience is that it can enable collective action that can lead to the provision of needed aid and services.

Project description:IntroductionWe examined the extent to which the post-disaster deterioration of social support and social capital mediates the associations between disaster-related experiences and depressive symptoms among survivors to test the social support deterioration model.MethodsWe used unique natural experiment data (n = 3567) stemming from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The follow-up survey was conducted 2.5 years after the disaster. We examined associations between changes in depressive symptoms, disaster-related experiences (loss of loved ones, changes in household income, loss of job, drop in subjective economic status, and home loss), and post-disaster deterioration of four different types of social support (i.e., kin emotional, kin instrumental, non-kin emotional, and non-kin instrumental support), as well as two dimensions of individual-level social capital (i.e., informal socializing and social cohesion). We then performed causal mediation analysis.ResultsWe found that there was deterioration of social support and social capital among individuals with disaster-related experiences. We also found associations between deterioration of social support/capital and worsening of depressive symptoms for specific categories of disaster experiences (i.e., drop in subjective economic status, loss of job, and home loss). However, causal mediation analysis showed little evidence of mediation by post-disaster deterioration of social support/capital. There was some evidence to suggest exposure-mediator interaction such that the association between social support/capital deterioration and depressive symptoms was weaker among those with disaster experiences.DiscussionThe social support deterioration model was not empirically supported among older-adult disaster survivors of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, after accounting for exposure-mediator interactions.

Project description:OBJECTIVE:Developing an adequate disaster response capacity involves an assessment of available resources in areas that are vulnerable to disaster. Here, we sought to evaluate the gap between predicted damage in a foreseeable major earthquake versus existing municipality-level resources in Tokyo, Japan. METHODS:Our study focused on the 53 municipalities in Tokyo to evaluate the relationships between the predicted number of severe casualties per 1,000 population from a future earthquake, community characteristics, and inpatient bed supply in local hospitals. Correlation analysis and supply-demand balance estimations were carried out at the municipality level, and the results were geographically visualized using choropleth maps. RESULTS:The correlation analysis showed that higher casualties were correlated with municipalities with faster population increase, higher taxable incomes, lower unemployment rates, and higher bed volumes in disaster base hospitals. Under a maximal damage scenario in a future earthquake, we predict a shortage of 2,780 beds for the treatment of severe casualties across Tokyo. Even under a scenario of cooperation among neighboring municipalities, a shortage of 7,107 beds would remain. CONCLUSIONS:Tokyo is located in a zone where major earthquake damage is anticipated. Cooperation between neighboring municipalities may not suffice to address the undersupply of beds during the acute phase of a disaster. Hence, existing disaster preparedness plans require further reinforcement with a focus on local vulnerabilities.

Project description:BackgroundWe examined prospectively whether social capital mitigates the adverse effects of natural disaster on cognitive decline.MethodsThe baseline for our study was established seven months before the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in a survey of older community-dwelling adults who lived 80 kilometers west of the epicenter (59.0% response rate). Approximately two and a half years after the disaster, the follow-up survey gathered information about personal experiences of disaster as well as incidence of cognitive disability (82.1% follow-up rate). Our primary outcome was cognitive disability (measured on an 8-level scale) assessed by in-home assessment.FindingsThe experience of housing damage was associated with risk of cognitive impairment (coefficient = 0.04, 95% confidence interval: 0.02 to 0.06). Factor analysis of our analytic sample (n = 3,566) established two sub-scales of social capital: a cognitive dimension (perceptions of community social cohesion) and a structural dimension (informal socializing and social participation). Fixed effects regression showed that informal socializing and social participation buffered the risk of cognitive decline resulting from housing damage.InterpretationInformal socializing and social participation may prevent cognitive impairment following natural disaster.FundingNational Institutes of Health (R01AG042463-04), the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare and the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Project description:ImportanceWhile the association between economic connectedness and social mobility has now been documented, the potential linkage between community-level economic connectedness and population health outcomes remains unknown.ObjectiveTo examine the association between community social capital measures (defined as economic connectedness, social cohesion, and civic engagement) and population health outcomes (defined across prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, kidney disease, and obesity).Design, setting, and participantsThis cross-sectional study included communities defined at the zip code tabulation area (ZCTA) level in all 50 US states. Data were collected from January 2021 to December 2022.Main outcomes and measuresMultivariable regression analyses were used to examine the association between population health outcomes and social capital. Adjusted analyses controlled for area demographic variables and county fixed effects. Heterogeneities within the associations based on the racial and ethnic makeup of communities were also examined.ResultsIn this cross-sectional study of 17 800 ZCTAs, across 50 US states, mean (SD) economic connectedness was 0.88 (0.32), indicating friendship sorting on income; the mean (SD) support ratio was 0.90 (0.10), indicating that 90% of ties were supported by a common friendship tie; and the mean (SD) volunteering rate was 0.08 (0.03), indicating that 8% of individuals within a given community were members of volunteering associations. Mean (SD) ZCTA diabetes prevalence was 10.8% (2.9); mean (SD) high blood pressure prevalence was 33.2% (6.2); mean (SD) high cholesterol prevalence was 32.7% (4.2), mean (SD) kidney disease prevalence was 3.0% (0.7), and mean (SD) obesity prevalence was 33.4% (5.6). Regression analyses found that a 1% increase in community economic connectedness was associated with significant decreases in prevalence of diabetes (-0.63%; 95% CI, -0.67% to -0.60%); hypertension (-0.31%; 95% CI, -0.33% to -0.29%); high cholesterol (-0.14%; 95% CI, -0.15% to -0.12%); kidney disease (-0.48%; 95% CI, -0.50% to -0.46%); and obesity (-0.28%; 95% CI, -0.29% to -0.27%). Second, a 1% increase in the community support ratio was associated with significant increases in prevalence of diabetes (0.21%; 95% CI, 0.16% to 0.26%); high blood pressure (0.16%; 95% CI, 0.13% to 0.19%); high cholesterol (0.16%; 95% CI, 0.13% to 0.19%); kidney disease (0.17%; 95% CI, 0.13% to 0.20%); and obesity (0.08%; 95% CI, 0.06% to 0.10%). Third, a 1% increase in the community volunteering rate was associated with significant increases in prevalence of high blood pressure (0.02%; 95% CI, 0.01% to 0.02%); high cholesterol (0.03%; 95% CI, 0.02% to 0.03%); and kidney disease (0.02%; 95% CI, 0.01% to 0.02%). Additional analyses found that the strength of these associations varied based on the majority racial and ethnic population composition of communities.Conclusions and relevanceIn this study, higher economic connectedness was significantly associated with better population health outcomes; however, higher community support ratios and volunteering rates were both significantly associated with worse population health. Associations also differed by majority racial and ethnic composition of communities.

Project description:The ability of the public to remain psychologically resilient in the face of public health emergencies and disasters (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) is a key factor in the effectiveness of a national response to such events. Community resilience and social capital are often perceived as beneficial and ensuring that a community is socially and psychologically resilient may aid emergency response and recovery. This review presents a synthesis of literature which answers the following research questions: How are community resilience and social capital quantified in research?; What is the impact of community resilience on mental wellbeing?; What is the impact of infectious disease outbreaks, disasters and emergencies on community resilience and social capital?; and, What types of interventions enhance community resilience and social capital?A scoping review procedure was followed. Searches were run across Medline, PsycInfo, and EMBASE, with search terms covering both community resilience and social capital, public health emergencies, and mental health. 26 papers met the inclusion criteria.The majority of retained papers originated in the USA, used a survey methodology to collect data, and involved a natural disaster. There was no common method for measuring community resilience or social capital. The association between community resilience and social capital with mental health was regarded as positive in most cases. However, we found that community resilience, and social capital, were initially negatively impacted by public health emergencies and enhanced by social group activities.Several key recommendations are proposed based on the outcomes from the review, which include: the need for a standardised and validated approach to measuring both community resilience and social capital; that there should be enhanced effort to improve preparedness to public health emergencies in communities by gauging current levels of community resilience and social capital; that community resilience and social capital should be bolstered if areas are at risk of disasters or public health emergencies; the need to ensure that suitable short-term support is provided to communities with high resilience in the immediate aftermath of a public health emergency or disaster; the importance of conducting robust evaluation of community resilience initiatives deployed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Project description:Evidence in majority White and low-population areas suggest that community prevention systems can create social capital that is needed to support high-quality implementation and sustainability of evidence-based programs. This study expands prior work by asking the question: How does community social capital change during the implementation of a community prevention system in low-income, highly populated communities of color? Data were collected from Community Board members and Key Leaders in five communities. Linear mixed effect models analyzed data on reports of social capital over time, first as reported by Community Board members then by Key Leaders. Community Board members reported social capital improved significantly over time during the implementation of the Evidence2Success framework. Key Leader reports did not change significantly over time. These findings suggest that community prevention systems implemented in historically marginalized communities may help communities build social capital that is likely to support the dissemination and sustainability of evidence-based programs.

Project description:Social capital-the strength of an individual's social network and community-has been identified as a potential determinant of outcomes ranging from education to health1-8. However, efforts to understand what types of social capital matter for these outcomes have been hindered by a lack of social network data. Here, in the first of a pair of papers9, we use data on 21 billion friendships from Facebook to study social capital. We measure and analyse three types of social capital by ZIP (postal) code in the United States: (1) connectedness between different types of people, such as those with low versus high socioeconomic status (SES); (2) social cohesion, such as the extent of cliques in friendship networks; and (3) civic engagement, such as rates of volunteering. These measures vary substantially across areas, but are not highly correlated with each other. We demonstrate the importance of distinguishing these forms of social capital by analysing their associations with economic mobility across areas. The share of high-SES friends among individuals with low SES-which we term economic connectedness-is among the strongest predictors of upward income mobility identified to date10,11. Other social capital measures are not strongly associated with economic mobility. If children with low-SES parents were to grow up in counties with economic connectedness comparable to that of the average child with high-SES parents, their incomes in adulthood would increase by 20% on average. Differences in economic connectedness can explain well-known relationships between upward income mobility and racial segregation, poverty rates, and inequality12-14. Project description:BackgroundSocial capital has long been recognized as a determinant of various health outcomes. However, the existence and magnitude of these associations may vary across different health conditions, different communities, and periods. This study aimed to investigate the association between social capital and major depressive disorder (MDD) among participants of the Persian Youth Cohort (PYC) study.MethodsThe PYC study enrolled 11,592 participants aged 15-34 years, from four cities in Iran representing a range of geographic areas. Baseline assessments included measuring lifetime MDD using the Persian version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI-2.1) and a 27-item social capital questionnaire to evaluate voluntary participation, trust, and sense of cohesion. We analyzed the baseline data using logistic regression to identify potential associations.ResultsThe prevalence of lifetime MDD was 18.3%. The mean social capital-total score was 73.93 (SD = 13.93). A higher social capital-total score was inversely associated with the likelihood of MDD (AOR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.66-0.74). Moreover, participants with higher scores in voluntary participation (AOR: 0.88, 95% CI: 0.83-0.92), trust (AOR: 0.65, 95% CI: 0.62-0.68), and sense of cohesion (AOR: 0.72, 95% CI: 0.68-0.75) were less probable to suffer from MDD.ConclusionOur study corroborates the existing evidence of the association between MDD and the three dimensions of social capital- participation, trust, and sense of cohesion- highlighting the consistency of these findings across diverse settings including young adults in Iran. The use of a valid diagnostic tool for assessing MDD adds robustness to our results, offering valuable insights for regions with similar social and cultural contexts. These findings suggest that interventions fostering social capital, particularly trust and cohesion, may help reduce the burden of MDD in youth.

Project description:Social capital has been shown to positively influence a multitude of economic, political, and social outcomes. Yet the factors that affect long-run social capital formation remain poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests that early state formation, especially investments in state capacity, are positively associated with higher levels of contemporary social capital and other prosocial attitudes. The channels by which early state capacity leads to greater social capital over time are even less understood. We contribute to both questions using the spatial and temporal expansion of the US postal network during the 19th century. We first show that county-level variation in post office density is highly correlated with a bevy of historical and contemporary indicators of social capital (e.g., associational memberships, civic participation, health, and crime). This finding holds even when controlling for historical measures of development and contemporary measures of income, inequality, poverty, education, and race. Second, we provide evidence of an informational mechanism by which this early investment in infrastructural capacity affected long-run social capital formation. Namely, we demonstrate that the expansion of the postal network in the 19th century strongly predicts the historical and contemporary location of local newspapers, which were the primary mode of impersonal information transmission during this period. Our evidence sheds light on the role of the state in both the origins of social capital and the channels by which it persists. Our findings also suggest that the consequences of the ongoing decline in local newspapers will negatively affect social capital.
