The rice bacterial blight pathogen <i>Xanthomonas oryzae</i> pv. oryzae (<i>Xoo</i>) constrains production in major rice growing countries of Asia. <i>Xoo</i> injects transcription activator-like effectors (TALEs) that bind to and activate host "susceptibility" (<i>S</i>) genes that are important for disease.
