<h4>Background</h4>Deficiency of the thyroid hormone transporter monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) causes severe intellectual and motor disability and high serum tri-iodothyronine (T<sub>3</sub>) concentrations (Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome).
