Spectral measurement of daylights and surface properties of natural objects in Japan.

ABSTRACT: We present a spectral dataset of daylights and surface reflectances and transmittances of natural objects measured in Japan. Daylights were measured under the sun and under shadow from dawn to dusk on four different days to capture their temporal spectral transition. We separately measured daylight spectra at five different locations (including an open space and a forest) with minimum time difference to reveal whether a local environment alters daylight spectra reaching the ground. We found that colors of natural objects were spread in a limited area of color space, and data points were absent around saturated green regions. Daylight spectra were found to have a larger variation across time, weather, and local environments than previously thought. Datasets are made freely available, expanding past public datasets mainly collected in Northern America and Europe.

Spectral and mode properties of surface plasmon polariton waveguides studied by near-field excitation and leakage-mode radiation measurement.

Project description:We present a method to couple surface plasmon polariton (SPP) guiding mode into dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide (DLSPPW) devices with spectral and mode selectivity. The method combined a transmission-mode near-field spectroscopy to excite the SPP mode and a leakage radiation optical microscope for direct visualization. By using a near-field fiber tip, incident photons with different wavelengths were converted into SPPs at the metal/dielectric interface. Real-time SPP radiation images were taken through leakage radiation images. The wavelength-dependent propagation lengths for silver- and gold-based DLSPPWs were measured and compared. It confirms that silver-based SPP has a propagation length longer than a gold-based one by 1.25, 1.38, and 1.52 times for red, green, and blue photons. The resonant coupling as a function of wavelength in dual DLSPPWs was measured. The coupling lengths measured from leakage radiation images were in good agreement with finite-difference time domain simulations. In addition, the propagation profile due to multi-SPP modes interference was studied by changing position of the fiber tip. In a multimode DLSPPW, SPP was split into two branches with a gap of 2.237 μm when the tip was at the center of the waveguide. It became a zigzag profile when the SPP was excited at the corner of the waveguide.

Ideal spectral emissivity for radiative cooling of earthbound objects.

Project description:We investigate the fundamental limit of radiative cooling of objects on the Earth's surfaces under general conditions including nonradiative heat transfer. We deduce the lowest steady-state temperature attainable and highest net radiative cooling power density available as a function of temperature. We present the exact spectral emissivity that can reach such limiting values, and show that the previously used 8-13 μm atmospheric window is highly inappropriate in low-temperature cases. The critical need for materials with simultaneously optimized optical and thermal properties is also identified. These results provide a reference against which radiative coolers can be benchmarked.

An online surface water COD measurement method based on multi-source spectral feature-level fusion.

Project description:To overcome the shortcomings of single or multi-wavelength ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) absorbance spectroscopic methods, fluorescence spectroscopic or wet chemistry methods for chemical oxygen demand (COD) measurement, an online detection method based on multi-source spectral feature-level fusion was developed and evaluated. In this method, UV-Vis absorbance spectra (deuterium-halogen lamp as light source) and fluorescence emission spectra (405 nm wavelength laser as excitation source) were measured online by a spectrophotometer (PG2000-Pro-Ex, Ocean Optics). Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and a successive projections algorithm (SPA) were utilized to realize signal de-noising and feature extraction on the two types of spectra, respectively. Feature-level fusion and least-square support vector regression (LS-SVR) were used to establish the COD measurement model. Through comparison of experiments and results, it is shown that the proposed method has a good performance on both noise tolerance and measurement accuracy.

Motivational Objects in Natural Scenes (MONS): A Database of >800 Objects.

Project description:In daily life, we are surrounded by objects with pre-existing motivational associations. However, these are rarely controlled for in experiments with natural stimuli. Research on natural stimuli would therefore benefit from stimuli with well-defined motivational properties; in turn, such stimuli also open new paths in research on motivation. Here we introduce a database of Motivational Objects in Natural Scenes (MONS). The database consists of 107 scenes. Each scene contains 2 to 7 objects placed at approximately equal distance from the scene center. Each scene was photographed creating 3 versions, with one object ("critical object") being replaced to vary the overall motivational value of the scene (appetitive, aversive, and neutral), while maintaining high visual similarity between the three versions. Ratings on motivation, valence, arousal and recognizability were obtained using internet-based questionnaires. Since the main objective was to provide stimuli of well-defined motivational value, three motivation scales were used: (1) Desire to own the object; (2) Approach/Avoid; (3) Desire to interact with the object. Three sets of ratings were obtained in independent sets of observers: for all 805 objects presented on a neutral background, for 321 critical objects presented in their scene context, and for the entire scenes. On the basis of the motivational ratings, objects were subdivided into aversive, neutral, and appetitive categories. The MONS database will provide a standardized basis for future studies on motivational value under realistic conditions.

Preverbal infants produce more protophones with artificial objects compared to natural objects.

Project description:Protophones are considered to be precursors of speech. These vocalizations have been notably discussed in relation to toys and their importance for developing language skills. However, little is known about how natural objects, compared to artificial objects, may affect protophone production, an approach that could additionally help reconstruct how language evolved. In the current study, we examined protophone production in 58 infants (4-18 months) while interacting with their caregivers when using natural objects, household items, and toys. The infants were recorded in their home environment, in a rural area in Zambia. The results showed that the infants produced significantly fewer protophones when using natural objects than when using household items or toys. Importantly, this pattern was found only for the younger preverbal infants, and there was no indication in the data that the level of caregiver responsiveness differed with regard to the object type. Furthermore, the infants of the present work selected primarily the household items when exposed to both natural objects and household items. These findings suggest that natural objects are less likely to promote protophone production and, consequently, language skill development than artificial objects in preverbal infants, who seem to favor the latter, perhaps due to their features designed for specific functional purposes. Furthermore, these findings provide empirical evidence that the use of complex tools in social interactions may have helped to promote the evolution of language among hominins.

Molecular Structures and Spectral Properties of Natural Indigo and Indirubin: Experimental and DFT Studies.

Project description:This paper presents a comparative study on natural indigo and indirubin in terms of molecular structures and spectral properties by using both computational and experimental methods. The spectral properties were analyzed with Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Raman, UV-Visible, and fluorescence techniques. The density functional theory (DFT) method with B3LYP using 6-311G(d,p) basis set was utilized to obtain their optimized geometric structures and calculate the molecular electrostatic potential, frontier molecular orbitals, FTIR, and Raman spectra. The single-excitation configuration interaction (CIS), time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), and polarization continuum model (PCM) were used to optimize the excited state structure and calculate the UV-Visible absorption and fluorescence spectra of the two molecules at B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level. The results showed that all computational spectra agreed well with the experimental results. It was found that the same vibrational mode presents a lower frequency in indigo than that in indirubin. The frontier molecular orbital analysis demonstrated that the UV-Visible absorption and fluorescence bands of indigo and indirubin are mainly derived from π → π* transition. The results also implied that the indigo molecule is more conjugated and planar than indirubin, thereby exhibiting a longer maximum absorption wavelength and stronger fluorescence peak.

Measurement of variant surface glycoprotein mRNA using RNAseq

Project description:Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427 bloodstream forms were cultured in HMI-11 medium. Total RNA was prepared using Qiagen RNAeasy kits for single sample RNAseq to estimate VSG mRNA abundance (and not to reconstruct the transcriptome). The cDNA libraries were prepared and sequenced at the Beijing Genomics Institute (Shenzhen, China). Polyadenylated RNA was purified from total RNA, converted to cDNA using random hexamer primers sheared and size selected for fragments ~200 bp in length using the Illumina TruSeq RNA Sample Preparation Kit v2. RNAseq of the resulting libraries was used for the determination of transcript abundances. Sequencing was performed on an Illumina Hiseq 2000 (Illumina, CA) platform and 90 base paired end reads obtained. Four samples were analysed: 1. Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427 expressing VSG2 2. Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427 expressing VSG6 3. Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427 expressing VSG6 and a VSG2 transgender located in the active bloodstream expression site 28 days after electroporation 4. Trypanosoma brucei Lister 427 expressing VSG6 and a VSG2 transgender located in the active bloodstream expression site 44 days after electroporation.

Automated sulcal depth measurement on cortical surface reflecting geometrical properties of sulci.

Project description:Sulcal depth that is one of the quantitative measures of cerebral cortex has been widely used as an important marker for brain morphological studies. Several studies have employed Euclidean (EUD) or geodesic (GED) algorithms to measure sulcal depth, which have limitations that ignore sulcal geometry in highly convoluted regions and result in under or overestimated depth. In this study, we proposed an automated measurement for sulcal depth on cortical surface reflecting geometrical properties of sulci, which named the adaptive distance transform (ADT). We first defined the volume region of cerebrospinal fluid between the 3D convex hull and the cortical surface, and constructed local coordinates for that restricted region. Dijkstra's algorithm was then used to compute the shortest paths from the convex hull to the vertices of the cortical surface based on the local coordinates, which may be the most proper approach for defining sulcal depth. We applied our algorithm to both a clinical dataset including patients with mild Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 25 normal controls and a simulated dataset whose shape was similar to a single sulcus. The mean sulcal depth in the mild AD group was significantly lower than controls (p = 0.007, normal [mean±SD]: 7.29±0.23 mm, AD: 7.11±0.29) and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was relatively high, showing the value of 0.818. Results from clinical dataset that were consistent with former studies using EUD or GED demonstrated that ADT was sensitive to cortical atrophy. The robustness against inter-individual variability of ADT was highlighted through simulation dataset. ADT showed a low and constant normalized difference between the depth of the simulated data and the calculated depth, whereas EUD and GED had high and variable differences. We suggest that ADT is more robust than EUD or GED and might be a useful alternative algorithm for measuring sulcal depth.

A Spectral Encoding Simulator for Broadband Active Illumination and Reconstruction-Based Spectral Measurement.

Project description:Spectral reflectance or transmittance measurements provide intrinsic information on the material of an object and are widely used in remote sensing, agriculture, diagnostic medicine, etc. Most reconstruction-based spectral reflectance or transmittance measurement methods based on broadband active illumination use narrow-band LEDs or lamps combined with specific filters as spectral encoding light sources. These light sources cannot achieve the designed spectral encoding with a high resolution and accuracy due to their low degree of freedom for adjustment, leading to inaccurate spectral measurements. To address this issue, we designed a spectral encoding simulator for active illumination. The simulator is composed of a prismatic spectral imaging system and a digital micromirror device. The spectral wavelengths and intensity are adjusted by switching the micromirrors. We used it to simulate spectral encodings according to the spectral distribution on micromirrors and solved the DMD patterns corresponding to the spectral encodings with a convex optimization algorithm. To verify the applicability of the simulator for spectral measurements based on active illumination, we used it to numerically simulate existing spectral encodings. We also numerically simulated a high-resolution Gaussian random measurement encoding for compressed sensing and measured the spectral reflectance of one vegetation type and two minerals through numerical simulations. We reconstructed the spectral transmittance of a calibrated filter through an experiment. The results show that the simulator can measure the spectral reflectance or transmittance with a high resolution and accuracy.

Digitization of natural objects with micro CT and photographs.

Project description:In this paper, we present a three-dimensional (3D) digitization technique for natural objects, such as insects and plants. The key idea is to combine X-ray computed tomography (CT) and photographs to obtain both complicated 3D shapes and surface textures of target specimens. We measure a specimen by using an X-ray CT device and a digital camera to obtain a CT volumetric image (volume) and multiple photographs. We then reconstruct a 3D model by segmenting the CT volume and generate a texture by projecting the photographs onto the model. To achieve this reconstruction, we introduce a technique for estimating a camera position for each photograph. We also present techniques for merging multiple textures generated from multiple photographs and recovering missing texture areas caused by occlusion. We illustrate the feasibility of our 3D digitization technique by digitizing 3D textured models of insects and flowers. The combination of X-ray CT and a digital camera makes it possible to successfully digitize specimens with complicated 3D structures accurately and allows us to browse both surface colors and internal structures.
