A Twelve-Hundred-Year Stable Oxygen Isotope Chronology Constructed Using Subfossil Wood from Schwarzensee Lake, Austrian Alps.

ABSTRACT: This study presents a new stable oxygen isotope chronology, covering the years 800-2000 AD, constructed using modern and subfossil wood derived from trees growing around Lake Schwarzensee in Austria. The climatic signal imparted in the chronology is conditioned mainly by the direct influence of environmental factors on the isotopic signature of source water, which in turn is regulated by evaporation and condensation mechanisms. The second driver of stable oxygen isotope is the physiological response of trees to changing weather conditions, most importantly rates of transpiration. The chronology of stable oxygen isotopes corresponds well with both temperature (r = 0.485; p < 0.05) and total precipitation (r = -0.548; p < 0.05) during the growing season (May-September). This mixed signal results from the fact that the relationship between the content of stable oxygen isotopes and the influence of climate is multifactorial. Moreover, the effect exerted by meteorological conditions on stable isotope ratio changes over time. This is most probably linked to interannual variation in climatic and environmental factors.

Project description:Cephalopod carbonate geochemistry underpins studies ranging from Phanerozoic, global-scale change to outcrop-scale paleoecological reconstructions. Interpreting these data hinges on assumed similarity to model organisms, such as Nautilus, and generalization from other molluscan biomineralization processes. Aquarium rearing and capture of wild Nautilus suggest shell carbonate precipitates quickly (35 μm/day) in oxygen isotope equilibrium with seawater. Other components of Nautilus shell chemistry are less well-studied but have potential to serve as proxies for paleobiology and paleoceanography. To calibrate the geochemical response of cephalopod δ15Norg, δ13Corg, δ13Ccarb, δ18Ocarb, and δ44/40Cacarb to modern anthropogenic environmental change, we analyzed modern, historical, and subfossil Nautilus macromphalus from New Caledonia. Samples span initial human habitation, colonialization, and industrial pCO2 increase. This sampling strategy is advantageous because it avoids the shock response that can affect geochemical change in aquarium experiments. Given the range of living depths and more complex ecology of Nautilus, however, some anthropogenic signals, such as ocean acidification, may not have propagated to their living depths. Our data suggest some environmental changes are more easily preserved than others given variability in cephalopod average living depth. Calculation of the percent respired carbon incorporated into the shell using δ13Corg, δ13Ccarb, and Suess-effect corrected δ13CDIC suggests an increase in the last 130 years that may have been caused by increasing carbon dioxide concentration or decreasing oxygen concentration at the depths these individuals inhabited. This pattern is consistent with increasing atmospheric CO2 and/or eutrophication offshore of New Caledonia. We find that δ44/40Ca remains stable across the last 130 years. The subfossil shell from a cenote may exhibit early δ44/40Ca diagenesis. Questions remain about the proportion of dietary vs ambient seawater calcium incorporation into the Nautilus shell. Values of δ15N do not indicate trophic level change in the last 130 years, and the subfossil shell may show diagenetic alteration of δ15N toward lower values. Future work using historical collections of Sepia and Spirula may provide additional calibration of fossil cephalopod geochemistry.

Project description:Recent advances in high-precision potassium (K) isotopic analysis have found considerable isotopic variation in rock samples of the Earth's continental and oceanic crusts; however, it is still uncertain whether there is any resolvable inter-mineral and mineral-melt K isotopic fractionation during igneous and metamorphic processes. Here, we report K isotope compositions of mineral separates from three extremely well preserved igneous rocks (intrusive/extrusive and mafic/intermediate/felsic) in order to investigate possible inter-mineral and mineral-melt K isotopic fractionation at magmatic temperatures. For the first time, we found large inter-mineral fractionation of K isotopes in natural samples (up to 1.072‰), where plagioclase displays a significant enrichment of heavier K isotopes compared to potassium feldspar and biotite in a granite. In addition, we also observed smaller but measurable K isotope fractionation (0.280‰±0.030‰) between ternary feldspar phenocrysts and matrix in a trachyandesite, as well as a comparable isotope fractionation (0.331‰±0.010‰) between plagioclase and the bulk in a gabbroic intrusive rock. We also evaluated such results by comparing the theoretically calculated equilibrium K isotope fractionation factors between relevant igneous minerals in literature and this study. In general, the measured inter-mineral fractionations are consistent with the theoretical calculations (i.e., plagioclase is enriched in heavier isotopes compared to potassium feldspar). Specifically, the measured K isotope fractionation between phenocryst rim and matrix in the trachyandesite agrees well with the calculated equilibrium isotope fractionation. However, the measured K isotope fractionations between phenocryst core and matrix as well as between plagioclase and K-feldspar are significantly larger (by a factor of ~2-3) than the calculated isotope fractionations, which suggest isotopic disequilibrium due to kinetic processes. Using a range of plagioclase-melt isotope fractionation factors inferred from the theoretical calculations in this study, we modeled the K isotopic fractionation during the formation of lunar anorthositic crust, and the result shows a negligible effect on the K isotopic compositions in both lunar crust and mantle. The K isotopic difference between Earth and Moon, therefore, cannot be the result of Lunar Magma Ocean differentiation. Finally, we evaluate the effect of observed inter-mineral fractionations on K-Ar and 40Ar-39Ar dating. This study indicates the variation of 40K/K ratio would contribute a maximum 0.08% error to the K-Ar and 40Ar-39Ar age uncertainties. We propose a refined 40K/total K ratio as 0.00011664±0.00000011 (116.64±0.11ppm) instead of the conventional value, 0.0001167(2) for the present Earth. Because some minerals fractionate K isotopes, ultrahigh precision age dating with the K-Ca-Ar dating systems must measure the K isotope fractionation in the same mineral fractions used for age dating.
