Experimental study of superheating of tin powders.

ABSTRACT: An unstable energy-unbalanced state such as superheating or supercooling is often unexpectedly observed because a factor of energy depends not only on the temperature but is a product of temperature (T) and entropy (S). Thus, at the same temperature, if the entropy is different, the total energy of the system can be different. In such cases, the temperature-change-rate cannot match the entropy-change-rate, which results in a hysteresis curve for the temperature/entropy relationship. Due to the difference between the temperature- and entropy-change-rates, properties of a material, such as the boiling and freezing points, can be extended from point to area. This study confirmed that depending on the heating rate, tin powders exhibit different melting points. Given the contemporary reinterpretation of many energy-non-equilibrium phenomena that have only been discussed on the basis of temperature, this study is expected to contribute to the actual expansion of scientific/engineering applications.

Superheating of grain boundaries within bulk colloidal crystals.

Project description:Whether grain boundaries (GBs) premelt is a longstanding question, because of the difficulty of direct experimental tests. Here, we focused an optical beam to locally heat single GBs within bulk hard-sphere colloidal crystals, observing the melting dynamics at single-particle resolution by video microscopy. The melting point is determined by analysing both the Lindemann parameter and the critical nucleus size for homogeneous nucleation. We found that all the GBs, including the high-energy GBs, can be superheated and melt via a heterogeneous nucleation mechanism. Based on the classical nucleation theory of GBs, we measured the incubation time and contact angle of the critical nucleus to compute all relevant kinetic factors, as well as the energy barrier, nucleation rate and the diffusion coefficient at the solid-liquid interface under weak superheating. The superheat limits of GBs with various misorientations have also been measured to further explore the instability mechanism. Under traditional uniform heating, premelting occurs only at triple junctions, whereas GBs retain their original structures up to the melting point. The premelted regions at triple junctions further interrupt high-energy GBs from superheating, through intrusion by uniform liquid layers. Overall, our experiments confirm the existence of superheating of GBs.

Superheating of ice crystals in antifreeze protein solutions.

Project description:It has been argued that for antifreeze proteins (AFPs) to stop ice crystal growth, they must irreversibly bind to the ice surface. Surface-adsorbed AFPs should also prevent ice from melting, but to date this has been demonstrated only in a qualitative manner. Here we present the first quantitative measurements of superheating of ice in AFP solutions. Superheated ice crystals were stable for hours above their equilibrium melting point, and the maximum superheating obtained was 0.44 degrees C. When melting commenced in this superheated regime, rapid melting of the crystals from a point on the surface was observed. This increase in melting temperature was more appreciable for hyperactive AFPs compared to the AFPs with moderate antifreeze activity. For each of the AFP solutions that exhibited superheating, the enhancement of the melting temperature was far smaller than the depression of the freezing temperature. The present findings clearly show that AFPs adsorb to ice surfaces as part of their mechanism of action, and this absorption leads to protection of ice against melting as well as freezing.

Contactless steam generation and superheating under one sun illumination.

Project description:Steam generation using solar energy provides the basis for many sustainable desalination, sanitization, and process heating technologies. Recently, interest has arisen for low-cost floating structures that absorb solar radiation and transfer energy to water via thermal conduction, driving evaporation. However, contact between water and the structure leads to fouling and pins the vapour temperature near the boiling point. Here we demonstrate solar-driven evaporation using a structure not in contact with water. The structure absorbs solar radiation and re-radiates infrared photons, which are directly absorbed by the water within a sub-100 μm penetration depth. Due to the physical separation from the water, fouling is entirely avoided. Due to the thermal separation, the structure is no longer pinned at the boiling point, and is used to superheat the generated steam. We generate steam with temperatures up to 133 °C, demonstrating superheated steam in a non-pressurized system under one sun illumination.

Superheating and homogeneous single bubble nucleation in a solid-state nanopore.

Project description:We demonstrate extreme superheating and single bubble nucleation in an electrolyte solution within a nanopore in a thin silicon nitride membrane. The high temperatures are achieved by Joule heating from a highly focused ionic current induced to flow through the pore by modest voltage biases. Conductance, nucleation, and bubble evolution are monitored electronically and optically. Temperatures near the thermodynamic limit of superheat are achieved just before bubble nucleation with the system at atmospheric pressure. Bubble nucleation is homogeneous and highly reproducible. This nanopore approach more generally suggests broad application to the excitation, detection, and characterization of highly metastable states of matter.

TiN nanotube supported Ni catalyst Ni@TiN-NTs: experimental evidence of structure-activity relations in catalytically hydrolyzing ammonia borane for hydrogen evolution.

Project description:With commercial TiO2 as the precursor, titanium nitride nanotubes (TiN-NTs) were fabricated through a hydrothermal - ammonia nitriding route, and next non-noble metal nanosized Ni particles were evenly and firmly anchored on the surface of the TiN-NTs via a PVP-mediated non-aqueous phase reduction-deposition strategy, to obtain the supported catalyst Ni@TiN-NTs. The X-ray powder diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy (FE-SEM/TEM) and specific surface area measurements were used to characterize and analyze the phase composition, surface microstructure and morphological features of the product. The catalytic activity of the Ni@TiN-NTs for hydrolyzing ammonia borane to generate hydrogen (H2) under different conditions was evaluated systematically. The results reveal that the as-fabricated TiN-NTs are composed of TiN and a small amount of TiN x O y with the approximate molar atomic ratio of Ti to N at 1 : 1, existing as hollow microtubules with mean tube diameter of 130 nm and length of about 1 μm. Via in situ reduction and deposition, Ni nanoparticles can be uniformly anchored on the surface of TiN-NTs. The catalytic activities of Ni(x)@TiN-NTs with different Ni loading amounts are all higher than that of single metal Ni nanoparticles. The temperature has a positive effect on the catalytic activity of Ni(20)@TiN-NTs, and its total turnover frequency for hydrolyzing ammonia borane is 11.73 mol(H2) (mol Ni)-1 min-1, with an apparent activation energy of 52.05 kJ mol-1 at 303 K. After 5 cycles, the Ni(20)@TiN-NTs catalyst still maintains 87% of the initial catalytic activity. It could be suggested that these tactics can also be extended to the fabrication of other metal or alloy catalysts supported by TiN-NTs, with great application potential and development prospects.

Experimental and Numerical Study of Al2219 Powders Deposition on Al2219-T6 Substrate by Cold Spray: Effects of Spray Angle, Traverse Speed, and Standoff Distance.

Project description:Cold spray (CS) is an emerging technology for repairing and 3D additive manufacturing of a variety of metallic components using deformable metal powders. In CS deposition, gas type, gas pressure, gas temperature, and powder feed rate are the four key process parameters that have been intensively studied. Spray angle, spray gun traverse speed, and standoff distance (SoD) are the other three process parameters that have been less investigated but are also important, especially when depositing on uneven substrates or building up 3D freeform structures. Herein, the effects of spray angle, traverse speed, and SoD during CS deposition have been investigated holistically on a single material system (i.e., Al2219 powders on Al2219-T6 substrate). The coatings' mass gain, thickness, porosity, and residual stress have been characterized, and the results show that spray angle and traverse speed exercise much more effects than SoD in determining coatings' buildup. Finite element method (FEM) modeling and computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulation have been carried out to understand the effects of these three parameters for implementing CS as repairing and additive manufacturing using aluminum-based alloy powders.
