Surgery for limited stage small cell lung cancer.

ABSTRACT: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive tumor type characterized by rapid growth and overall poor prognosis. For the past several decades, chemotherapy and radiotherapy have served as the cornerstone of treatment. Recently, however, the role of surgery for early stage disease has gained considerable interest. Multiple retrospective and observational studies have shown excellent survival for early stage SCLC treated with surgical resection. We herein review the past and present evidence regarding surgical options for limited stage SCLC.
