The complete chloroplast genome of a medicinal plant, Abutilon theophrasti Medik. (Malvaceae).

ABSTRACT: Abutilon theophrasti Medik. is an annual weed, widely distributed in Asia and Europe. The complete chloroplast genome reported here is 160,446 bp in length, including two inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,064 bp, which are separated by a large single-copy (LSC) and a small single-copy (SSC) of 89,089 and 21,229 bp, respectively. The whole chloroplast genome of A. theophrasti contains 113 distinct genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 30 transfer RNA, and four ribosome RNA. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that A. theophrasti is located in the basal position in Malveae.

Dynamic morphological plasticity in response to emergence timing in Abutilon theophrasti (Malvaceae).

Project description:Selections on emergence time might be conflicting, suggesting the existence of the optimal emergence time for plants. However, we know little about this and how morphological plasticity contributes to the strategies of plants in response to emergence timing. To better understand this issue from a dynamic perspective, we conducted a field experiment by subjecting plants of Abutilon theophrasti to four emergence treatments (ET1 ~ ET4) and measuring a number of mass and morphological traits on them at different growth stages (I ~ IV). On day 50, 70, and/or final harvest, among all ET treatments, plants germinated in late spring (ET2) performed the best in total mass, spring germinants (ET1) and ET2 performed better in stem allocation, stem, and root diameters than later germinants (ET3 and ET4); summer germinants (ET3) had the highest reproductive mass and allocation, while late-summer germinants (ET4) had the greatest leaf mass allocation, with greater or canalized leaf number, and root length traits than others. Plants that emerged in late spring can maximize their growth potential, while those with either advanced or delayed emergence are still capable of adaptation via allocation and morphological plasticity. Early germinants (ET1 and ET2) preferred stem growth to leaf and reproductive growth, due to sufficient time for reproduction in the growth season. With limited time for growth, plants that emerged late may prefer to quicken leaf growth (indicated by increased leaf mass allocation and leaf number) at the cost of stem or root growth for the complete life cycle, reflecting both positive and negative effects of delayed emergence.

Complete chloroplast genome of a semi-mangrove plant Hibiscus tiliaceus (Malvaceae).

Project description:Hibiscus tiliaceus is a semi-mangrove species that is widely distributed in tropical and subtropical coastal areas around the world. Here, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of H. tiliaceus was assembled and characterized. The cp genome was 161,748 bp in length, consisting of a large single copy (LSC) region of 89,190 bp and a small single copy (SSC) region of 19,616 bp, which were separated by a pair of 26,471 bp inverted repeat (IR) regions. The overall GC content was 36.88%. A total of 131 genes, including 85 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes were identified. Phylogenetic tree reconstructed by 15 complete cp genomes revealed that H. tiliaceus was sister to the congeneric species H. cannabinus.

The complete chloroplast genome of Malvaviscus penduliflorus (Malvaceae)

Project description:Abstract In this study, we assembled the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Malvaviscus penduliflorus using high-throughput Illumina sequencing reads. The resulting plastome assembly displayed a typical quadripartite structure with a total length of 160,332 bp, containing a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 26,313 bp separated by a large single-copy region (LSC) of 88,750 bp and a small single-copy region (SSC) of 18,956 bp. The M. penduliflorus cp genome contained 128 genes, and its overall GC content was 36.96%. Phylogenetic analysis among M. penduliflorus and five other Malvaceae species demonstrated that M. penduliflorus was closely related to Urena procumbens and Hibiscus cannabinus. The M. penduliflorus cp genome presented in this study will lay a good foundation for further genetic and genomic studies of the genus Malvaviscus as well as Malvaceae.

Project description:Callianthe picta likes a warm and humid climate, is resistant to barrenness, and is easy to reproduce. Its petals and leaves can promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, and can also be used to relax the muscles and collaterals. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. picta to investigate its phylogenetic relationship in the family Abutilon. The complete chloroplast size of C. picta is 160,398 bp, including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 89,088 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 20,138 bp, a pair of invert repeats (IRs) regions of 25,586 bp. The GC content of the whole complete chloroplast genome is 37.0%. We annotated 128 genes in the genome in detail, including 84 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that C. picta was closely related to Abutilon theophrati.

Complete chloroplast genome sequence of Heritiera angustata (Malvaceae): an endangered plant species.

Project description:Heritiera angustata (Malvaceae) is an evergreen tree distributed in the Chinese provinces of Hainan and Yunnan and in Cambodia. In China, it is listed as 'Endangered' (EN) China Red List of Higher Plants, although it is not protected by law. The complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of this threatened species is reported in this study, based on high-throughput sequencing (Illumina). The complete cp genome is 168, 953 bp in length, containing a pair of inverted repeat regions (IRs) of 34,491 bp, a large single copy (LSC) region of 89,054 bp, and a small single copy (SSC) region of 10,917 bp. The cp genome contains 129 genes, consisting of 85 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes and eight rRNA genes. The overall AT content in the cp genome of H. angustata is 63.2%. The phylogenetic analyses indicate that there is a close relationship between H. angustata and Firmiana pulcherrima.

Complete Chloroplast Genome of Abutilon fruticosum: Genome Structure, Comparative and Phylogenetic Analysis.

Project description:Abutilon fruticosum is one of the endemic plants with high medicinal and economic value in Saudi Arabia and belongs to the family Malvaceae. However, the plastome sequence and phylogenetic position have not been reported until this study. In this research, the complete chloroplast genome of A. fruticosum was sequenced and assembled, and comparative and phylogenetic analyses within the Malvaceae family were conducted. The chloroplast genome (cp genome) has a circular and quadripartite structure with a total length of 160,357 bp and contains 114 unique genes (80 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes and 4 rRNA genes). The repeat analyses indicate that all the types of repeats (palindromic, complement, forward and reverse) were present in the genome, with palindromic occurring more frequently. A total number of 212 microsatellites were identified in the plastome, of which the majority are mononucleotides. Comparative analyses with other species of Malvaceae indicate a high level of resemblance in gene content and structural organization and a significant level of variation in the position of genes in single copy and inverted repeat borders. The analyses also reveal variable hotspots in the genomes that can serve as barcodes and tools for inferring phylogenetic relationships in the family: the regions include trnH-psbA, trnK-rps16, psbI-trnS, atpH-atpI, trnT-trnL, matK, ycf1 and ndhH. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that A. fruticosum is closely related to Althaea officinalis, which disagrees with the previous systematic position of the species. This study provides insights into the systematic position of A. fruticosum and valuable resources for further phylogenetic and evolutionary studies of the species and the Malvaceae family to resolve ambiguous issues within the taxa.
