Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome of Ajuga forrestii (Lamiaceae), a medicinal plant in southwest of China.

ABSTRACT: Ajuga forrestii is a medicinal plant commonly used in southwest of China. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of A. forrestii to investigate its phylogenetic relationship in the family Lamiaceae. The chloroplast genome of A. forrestii was 150,492 bp in length with 38.3% overall GC content, including a large single copy (LSC) region of 82,148 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 17,160 bp and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,592 bp. The cp genome contained 112 genes, including 79 protein coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated Ajuga was closely related to Scutellaria.

Project description:Leycesteria formosa is a frequently used medicinal plant (namely, 'Yi yao') in Southwest China. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast (cp) genome sequence of L. formosa to investigate its phylogenetic relationship in the family Caprifoliaceae. The chloroplast genome of L. formosa was 156,261 bp in length with 38.1% overall GC content, including a large single-copy (LSC) region of 90,353 bp, a small single-copy (SSC) region of 19,299 bp and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 23,287 bp. Project description:Plants classified to the genus Callicarpa L. have important medicinal and ornamental value. Here, we report and characterize the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of C. bodinieri to provide molecular basis for the further studies on the phylogeny analysis of this genus. The cp genome is 154,183 bp in length and is organized with a typical quadripartite structure, containing two inverted repeats of 25,701 bp separated by a large single-copy region of 84,956 bp and a small single-copy region of 17,825 bp. The cp genome of C. bodinieri contains 112 distinct genes, including 78 protein-coding, 30 tRNAs and 4 rRNAs genes. The phylogenetic analysis showed that C. bodinieri is fully resolved in a clade with C. nudiflora, sister to the clade of C. formosana and C. longifolia var. floccosa.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of the medicinal plant, Dracocephalum rupestre (Lamiaceae).

Project description:Dracocephalum rupestre (tribe Mentheae; Lamiaceae) is a perennial herb from Korea and China with high ornamental and medicinal value. Here, we report its complete chloroplast genome to provide insight into the phylogenetic relationships of Dracocephalum. The genome is 151,230 bp long, with two inverted repeat regions (25,643 bp each) that separate a large single-copy region (82,536 bp) and a small single-copy region (17,408 bp). It contains 133 genes that encode 88 proteins, eight rRNAs, and 37 tRNAs. The maximum-likelihood phylogenetic analysis strongly supported Dracocephalum monophyly, showing that the genus forms a sister group with the subtribe Menthinae in the tribe Mentheae.

Characterization of the complete plastid genome of Abies forrestii (Pinaceae) from southwest China.

Project description:Abies forrestii is endemic to southwest China and ecologically important as a major component of the cold temperate forests. This study was the first report complete chloroplast (cp) genome of A. forrestii. The complete chloroplast genome was 120,022 bp in size. In total, 114 genes were identified, including 68 peptide-encoding genes, 35 tRNA genes, four rRNA genes, six open reading frames and one pseudogene. Thirteen genes contain introns. In phylogenetic analysis, A. forrestii was found to be closely related with A. nukiangensis, A. fanjingshanensis and A. delavayi subsp. fansipanensis. Our study will provide potential genetic resources for further evolutionary studies of this ecologically important species.

Project description:Callicarpa integerrima var. chinensis is one of the traditional medical herbs which has the potential for multiple diseases' treatment. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. integerrima var. chinensis was sequenced and assembled. A typical quadripartite structure was observed in the chloroplast genome of C. integerrima var. chinensis which was 154179 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeat (IR) regions (each 51396 bp) separated by a large single-copy region (LSC) of 84927 bp and a small single-copy region (SSC) of 17856 bp, and the overall GC contents of the chloroplast genome was 38.08%. Additionally, we annotated 132 genes, including 86 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis was adopted which confirmed the position of C. integerrima var. chinensis was close to the congeneric C. formosana and C. siongsaiensis.

Project description:Crataegus scabrifolia (Franch.) Rehd is a medicinal and edible plant in Southwest China. The chloroplast genome of C. scabrifolia was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing technology, and its genetic relationship to related species was discussed. The chloroplast genome is 159,637 bp long, with two inverted repeat (IR) regions (26,384 bp each) that separate a large single-copy (LSC) region (87,730 bp) and a small single-copy (SSC) region (19,139 bp). A total of 127 genes were annotated, including 83 protein-coding genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 36 tRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree shows that C. hupehensis is closely related to C. scabrifolia with strong bootstrap support.

Complete chloroplast genome of Dactylicapnos torulosa (Hook. & Thoms.) Hutch., a medicinal plant from southwest China and its phylogeny.

Project description:Dactylicapnos torulosa (Hook. & Thoms.) Hutch. is a commonly used medicinal plant in southwest China. In this study, we sequenced the complete chloroplast genome of D. torulosa and explored phylogenetic relationship of the species and its related species. The genome size is 166,238 bp with typical quadripartite structure. A pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 37,115 bp are separated by a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,627 bp and a large single copy (LSC) region of 73,381 bp. In total, 107 genes are annotated, including 76 protein coding genes, 27 transport RNA, four ribosomal RNA. Moreover, 13 genes are found to contain introns. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Dactylicapnos torulosa formed a basal branch instead of gathering together with Corydalis, which was inconsistent with the traditional treatment on Fumarioideae. This study provides useful information for phylogeny and conservation of the species and its relatives.

The complete chloroplast genome of Ocimum gratissimum from India - a medicinal plant in the Lamiaceae.

Project description:Ocimum gratissimum L. is an important medicinal species with several therapeutic applications. It is used in traditional medicine as a single drug and in formulations. We generated the complete chloroplast genome sequence of O. gratissimum by using Illumina paired-end sequencing data. The O. gratissimum chloroplast genome is 152,469 bp in length, containing a large single copy (LSC) region of 83,614 bp and a small single copy region (SSC) of 17,607 bp, separated by a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 25,624 bp. The genome contains 138 unique genes, including 85 protein-coding, 45 tRNA, and eight rRNA genes. Among them, six genes have one intron each, and two genes contain two introns. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome is 37.8%, while the corresponding values of LSC, SSC, and IR regions are 35.6%, 31.7%, and 43.2%, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis with the complete chloroplast genomes of other related species revealed that O. gratissimum is fully resolved in a clade with other Ocimum species classified to the family Lamiaceae.

The cp genome contained 114 genes, including 80 protein coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and 4 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis indicated S. yunnanensis was closely related to S. miltiorrhiza, which afforded a scientific evidence that S. yunnanensis could be used as original species of Radix et Rhizoma Saliviae Miltiorrhizae (Danshen).
