The Longitudinal Revolution: Sociological research at the 50-year milestone of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics.

ABSTRACT: The U.S. Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) celebrated its 50^th anniversary in 2018. Initially designed to assess the nation's progress in combatting poverty, PSID's scope broadened quickly to a variety of topics and fields of inquiry. To date, sociologists are the second-most frequent users of PSID data after economists. Here, we describe the ways in which PSID's history reflects shifts in social science scholarship and funding priorities over half a century, take stock of the most important sociological breakthroughs it facilitated, in particular those relying on the longitudinal structure of the data, and critically assess the unique advantages and limitations of the PSID and surveys like it for today's sociological scholarship.

Project description:ImportanceCurrent estimates of productivity losses associated with heart disease and stroke in the US include income losses from premature mortality but do not include income losses from morbidity.ObjectiveTo estimate labor income losses associated with morbidity of heart disease and stroke in the US due to missed or lower labor force participation.Design, setting, and participantsThis cross-sectional study used 2019 Panel Study of Income Dynamics data to estimate labor income losses associated with heart disease and stroke by comparing labor income between persons with and without heart disease or stroke, after controlling for sociodemographic characteristics and other chronic conditions and considering the situation of zero labor income (eg, withdrawal from the labor market). The study sample included individuals aged 18 to 64 years who were reference persons or spouses or partners. Data analysis was conducted from June 2021 to October 2022.ExposureThe key exposure was heart disease or stroke.Main outcomes and measuresThe main outcome was labor income, measured for the year 2018. Covariates included sociodemographic characteristics and other chronic conditions. Labor income losses associated with heart disease and stroke were estimated using the 2-part model, in which part 1 is to model the probability that labor income is greater than zero and part 2 is to regress positive labor income, with both parts having the same set of explanatory variables.ResultsIn the study sample consisting of 12 166 individuals (6721 [52.4%] females) representing a weighted mean income of $48 299 (95% CI, $45 712-$50 885), the prevalence of heart disease was 3.7% and the prevalence of stroke was 1.7%, and there were 1610 Hispanic persons (17.3%), 220 non-Hispanic Asian or Pacific Islander persons (6.0%), 3963 non-Hispanic Black persons (11.0%), and 5688 non-Hispanic White persons (60.2%). The age distribution was largely even, from 21.9% for the age 25 to 34 years group to 25.8% for the age 55 to 64 years group, except for young adults (age 18-24 years), who made up 4.4% of the sample. After adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics and other chronic conditions, persons with heart disease would receive an estimated $13 463 (95% CI, $6993-$19 933) less in annual labor income than those without heart disease (P < .001), and persons with stroke would receive an estimated $18 716 (95% CI, $10 356-$27 077) less in annual labor income than those without stroke (P < .001). Total labor income losses associated with morbidity were estimated at $203.3 billion for heart disease and $63.6 billion for stroke.Conclusions and relevanceThese findings suggest that total labor income losses associated with morbidity of heart disease and stroke were far greater than those from premature mortality. Comprehensive estimation of total costs of CVD may assist decision-makers in assessing benefits from averted premature mortality and morbidity and allocating resources to the prevention, management, and control of CVD.

Project description:BackgroundIncreasing evidence shows that health inequalities exist between and within countries, and emphasis has been placed on strengthening the production and use of the global health inequalities research, so as to improve capacities to act. Yet, a comprehensive overview of this evidence base is still needed, to determine what is known about the global and historical scientific production on health inequalities to date, how is it distributed in terms of country income groups and world regions, how has it changed over time, and what international collaboration dynamics exist.MethodsA comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the global scientific production on health inequalities, from 1966 to 2015, was conducted using Scopus database. The historical and global evolution of the study of health inequalities was considered, and through joinpoint regression analysis and visualisation network maps, the preceding questions were examined.Findings159 countries (via authorship affiliation) contributed to this scientific production, three times as many countries than previously found. Scientific output on health inequalities has exponentially grown over the last five decades, with several marked shift points, and a visible country-income group affiliation gradient in the initiation and consistent publication frequency. Higher income countries, especially Anglo-Saxon and European countries, disproportionately dominate first and co-authorship, and are at the core of the global collaborative research networks, with the Global South on the periphery. However, several country anomalies exist that suggest that the causes of these research inequalities, and potential underlying dependencies, run deeper than simply differences in country income and language.ConclusionsWhilst the global evidence base has expanded, Global North-South research gaps exist, persist and, in some cases, are widening. Greater understanding of the structural determinants of these research inequalities and national research capacities is needed, to further strengthen the evidence base, and support the long term agenda for global health equity.

Project description:BackgroundCollecting longitudinal data during and shortly after pregnancy is difficult, as pregnant women often avoid studies with repeated surveys. In contrast, pregnant women interact with certain websites at multiple stages throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period. This digital connection presents the opportunity to use a website as a way to recruit and enroll pregnant women into a panel study and collect valuable longitudinal data for research. These data can then be used to learn new scientific insights and improve health care.ObjectiveThe objective of this paper is to describe the approaches applied and lessons learned from designing and conducting an online panel for health care research, specifically perinatal mood disorders. Our panel design and approach aimed to recruit a large sample (N=1200) of pregnant women representative of the US population and to minimize attrition over time.MethodsWe designed an online panel to enroll participants from the pregnancy and parenting website BabyCenter. We enrolled women into the panel from weeks 4 to 10 of pregnancy (Panel 1) or from weeks 28 to 33 of pregnancy (Panel 2) and administered repeated psychometric assessments from enrollment through 3 months postpartum. We employed a combination of adaptive digital strategies to recruit, communicate with, and build trust with participants to minimize attrition over time. We were transparent at baseline about expectations, used monetary and information-based incentives, and sent personalized reminders to reduce attrition. The approach was participant-centric and leveraged many aspects of flexibility that digital methods afford.ResultsWe recruited 1179 pregnant women-our target was 1200-during a 26-day period between August 25 and September 19, 2016. Our strategy to recruit participants using adaptive sampling tactics resulted in a large panel that was similar to the US population of pregnant women. Attrition was on par with existing longitudinal observational studies in pregnant populations, and 79.2% (934/1179) of our panel completed another survey after enrollment. There were 736 out of 1179 (62.4%) women who completed at least one assessment in both the prenatal and postnatal periods, and 709 out of 1179 (60.1%) women who completed the final assessment. To validate the data, we compared participation rates and factors of perinatal mood disorders ascertained from this study with prior research, suggesting reliability of our approach.ConclusionsA suitably designed online panel created in partnership with a digital media source that reaches the target audience is a means to leverage a conveniently sized and viable sample for scientific research. Our key lessons learned are as follows: sampling tactics may need to be adjusted to enroll a representative sample, attrition can be reduced by adapting to participants' needs, and study engagement can be boosted by personalizing interactions with the flexibility afforded by digital technologies.
