Review of the mite genus Krantzolaspina Datta & Bhattacharjee (Mesostigmata, Parholaspididae) with re-description of K. angustatus comb. nov. (Ishikawa) from Indonesia.

ABSTRACT: Herein, we update the diagnosis and description of the genus Krantzolaspina Datta & Bhattacharjee and provide a list of the three valid species including new combinations and synonyms, as follows: 1) Krantzolaspina angustatus (Ishikawa, 1987) comb. nov. (= Indutolaelaps jiroftensisHajizadeh et al., 2017syn. nov.), 2) K. rebatii Datta & Bhattacharjee, 1989 and 3) K. solimani (Metwali, 1983) comb. nov. Finally, we re-describe K. angustatus (Ishikawa, 1987) comb. nov. based on the holotype from Japan, voucher specimens from Iran and additional females that we found in soil samples from oil palm plantations in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Project description:Phymatodiscidaefam. nov. is diagnosed, with Phymatodiscus as the type genus. A new genus, Bardizongen. nov., with Bardizoneotvosisp. nov. (from Indonesia) as the type species, is erected to accommodate the Phymatodiscus species with an eye-like dorsal depression. Six Phymatodiscus species are reclassified as Bardizon: B.aokii (Hiramatsu, 1985), comb. nov., B.haradai (Hiramatsu, 1985), comb. nov., B.oculatus (Hirschmann, 1977), comb. nov., B.kuni (Kontschán & Starý, 2011), comb. nov., B.insolitus (Kontschán & Ripka, 2016), comb. nov., and B.malayicus (Kontschán & Starý, 2012), comb. nov. The new species differs from the previously described congeners in the sculptural pattern, the shapes of the dorsal and ventral setae, and the sculptural pattern of the sternal shield of the male and the genital shield of the female. A list of all known phymatodiscid species is presented. Phymatodiscustitanicus (Berlese, 1905) is moved to the genus Bostocktrachys: B.titanicus (Berlese, 1905), comb. nov. (family Trachyuropodidae).

Review of the mite subfamily Arctoseiinae Evans with a key to its genera and description of a new genus and species from Siberia (Parasitiformes, Mesostigmata, Ascidae).

Project description:We redefine the subfamily Arctoseiinae of the family Ascidae, and describe a new genus, Maxiniagen. n., based on a new species, Maxinia arctomontanasp. n., whose adults display a combination of attri-butes uniquely different from other genera of the subfamily. The geographical range of Maxinia arctomontana is limited by arctic and mountain landscapes of Siberia. This description provides furtherdata on the arctic distribution and morphological diversity of the subfamily Arctoseiinae, which is unusually well represented in that region (26-83% in local gamasid mite faunas). Conceptual problems with the genus Iphidonopsis Gwiazdowicz, 2004 are reviewed, and a new combination, Iphidonopsis magnanalis (Ma & Yin, 1999) comb. n., is presented for Iphidozercon magnanalis Ma & Yin, 1999 from China. The genus Diseius Lindquist & Evans, 1965 is provisionally moved from the family Ascidae to the Digamasellidae. A new key to the genera of Arctoseiinae is presented.

Project description:Species of the genus Prosthecomicrobium are noted for their numerous cellular appendages or prosthecae that extend from the cells. This investigation confirms that the genus is polyphyletic based on an extensive analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequences of several named species of the genus. The analyses indicate that some Prosthecomicrobium species are more closely related to non-prosthecate genera, including Devosia, Labrenzia, Blastochloris, Methylosinus, Mesorhizobium and Kaistia, than they are to other species of the genus Prosthecomicrobium. For this reason, two of the Prosthecomicrobium clades which are polyphyletic with the type species, Prosthecomicrobium pneumaticum, are renamed as new genera. The currently named species Prosthecomicrobium enhydrum, Prosthecomicrobium mishustinii, Prosthecomicrobium consociatum and Prosthecomicrobium litoralum are reclassified in two new genera, Vasilyevaea gen. nov. and Bauldia gen. nov. with four new combinations: Vasilyevaea enhydra comb. nov. (the type species) and Vasilyevaea mishustinii comb. nov., and Bauldia consociata comb. nov. and Bauldia litoralis comb. nov. (the type species). The type strain of Vasilyevaea enhydra is strain 9b(T) (=ATCC 23634(T) =VKM B-1376(T)). The type strain of the other species in this genus is Vasilyevaea mishustinii strain 17(T) (=VKM B-2499(T) =CCM 7569(T)). The type strain of Bauldia litoralis is strain 524-16(T) (= NCIB 2233(T) =ATCC 35022(T)). The type strain of the other species in this genus is Bauldia consociata strain 11(T) (=VKM B-2498(T) =CCM 7594(T)).

Re-examination of the taxonomic status of Enterobacter helveticus, Enterobacter pulveris and Enterobacter turicensis as members of the genus Cronobacter and their reclassification in the genera Franconibacter gen. nov. and Siccibacter gen. nov. as Franconibacter helveticus comb. nov., Franconibacter pulveris comb. nov. and Siccibacter turicensis comb. nov., respectively.

Project description:Recently, a taxonomical re-evaluation of the genus Enterobacter, based on multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) analysis, has led to the proposal that the species Enterobacter pulveris, Enterobacter helveticus and Enterobacter turicensis should be reclassified as novel species of the genus Cronobacter. In the present work, new genome-scale analyses, including average nucleotide identity, genome-scale phylogeny and k-mer analysis, coupled with previously reported DNA-DNA hybridization values and biochemical characterization strongly indicate that these three species of the genus Enterobacter are not members of the genus Cronobacter, nor do they belong to the re-evaluated genus Enterobacter. Furthermore, data from this polyphasic study indicated that all three species constitute two new genera. We propose reclassifying Enterobacter pulveris and Enterobacter helveticus in the genus Franconibacter gen. nov. as Franconibacter pulveris comb. nov. (type strain 601/05(T) = LMG 24057(T) = DSM 19144(T)) and Franconibacter helveticus comb. nov. (type strain 513/05(T) = LMG 23732(T) = DSM 18396(T)), respectively, and Enterobacter turicensis in the genus Siccibacter gen. nov. as Siccibacter turicensis comb. nov. (type strain 508/05(T) = LMG 23730(T) = DSM 18397(T)).

Project description:Spirochaeta caldaria Pohlschroeder et al. 1995 is an obligately anaerobic, spiral-shaped bacterium that is motile via periplasmic flagella. The type strain, H1(T), was isolated in 1990 from cyanobacterial mat samples collected at a freshwater hot spring in Oregon, USA, and is of interest because it enhances the degradation of cellulose when grown in co-culture with Clostridium thermocellum. Here we provide a taxonomic re-evaluation for S. caldaria based on phylogenetic analyses of 16S rRNA sequences and whole genomes, and propose the reclassification of S. caldaria and two other Spirochaeta species as members of the emended genus Treponema. Whereas genera such as Borrelia and Sphaerochaeta possess well-distinguished genomic features related to their divergent lifestyles, the physiological and functional genomic characteristics of Spirochaeta and Treponema appear to be intermixed and are of little taxonomic value. The 3,239,340 bp long genome of strain H1(T) with its 2,869 protein-coding and 59 RNA genes is a part of the G enomic E ncyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea project.

Transfer of Erwinia toletana and Erwinia iniecta to a novel genus Winslowiella gen. nov. as Winslowiella toletana comb. nov. and Winslowiella iniecta comb. nov. and description of Winslowiella arboricola sp. nov., isolated from bleeding cankers on broadleaf hosts.

Project description:Following a screening campaign of bleeding cankers of broadleaf hosts in Great Britain, numerous bacterial strains were isolated, identified by 16S rRNA and protein-coding gene sequencing and ultimately classified. During the course of the study, several Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic strains were isolated from bleeding Platanus x acerifolia (London plane) and Tilia x europaea (common lime) cankers that could not be assigned to an existing species. Partial 16S rRNA gene sequencing placed these strains in the genus Erwinia, as a close phylogenetic relative of Erwinia toletana. In an effort to determine the taxonomic position of the strains, a polyphasic approach was followed including genotypic, genomic, phenotypic, and chemotaxonomic assays. Multilocus sequence analysis based on four protein-coding genes (gyrB, rpoB, infB, and atpD) confirmed the phylogenetic position of the strains as a novel taxon of subgroup 3 of the genus Erwinia, along with E. toletana and E. iniecta, and furthermore, provided support for their reclassification in a novel genus. Whole genome comparisons allowed the delimitation of the novel species and also supported the proposed transfer of subgroup 3 species to a novel genus in the Erwiniaeae. Phenotypically the novel species could be differentiated from E. toletana and E. iniecta, and the novel genus could be differentiated from the closely related genera Erwinia and Mixta. Therefore, we propose (1) the reclassification of E. toletana and E. iniecta in a novel genus, Winslowiella gen. nov., as Winslowiella toletana comb. nov. and Winslowiella iniecta comb. nov., with W. toletana comb. nov. as the type species (type strain A37T = CFBP 6631T = ATCC 700880T = CECT 5263T), and (2) classification of the novel strains as Winslowiella arboricola sp. nov. (type strain BAC 15a-03bT = LMG 32576T = NCPPB 4696T).

Revising the Freshwater Thelohania to Astathelohania gen. et comb. nov., and Description of Two New Species.

Project description:Crayfish are common hosts of microsporidian parasites, prominently from the genus Thelohania. Thelohania is a polyphyletic genus, with multiple genetically distinct lineages found from freshwater and marine environments. Researchers have been calling for a revision of this group for over a decade. We provide evidence that crayfish-infecting freshwater Thelohania are genetically and phylogenetically distinct from the marine Thelohania (Clade V/Glugeida), whilst also describing two new species that give further support to the taxonomic revision. We propose that the freshwater Thelohania should be transferred to their own genus, Astathelohania gen. et comb. nov., in a new family (Astathelohaniidae n. fam.). This results in the revision of Thelohania contejeani (Astathelohania contejeani), Thelohania montirivulorum (Astathelohania montirivulorum), and Thelohania parastaci (Astathelohania parastaci). We also describe two novel muscle-infecting Astathelohania species, A. virili n. sp. and A. rusti n. sp., from North American crayfishes (Faxonius sp.). We used histological, molecular, and ultrastructural data to formally describe the novel isolates. Our data suggest that the Astathelohania are genetically distinct from other known microsporidian genera, outside any described family, and that their SSU rRNA gene sequence diversity follows their host species and native geographic location. The range of this genus currently includes North America, Europe, and Australia.
