Leucheria cantillanensis (Nassauvieae, Asteraceae), a new species endemic to Central Chile.

ABSTRACT: A new species, Leucheria cantillanensis sp. nov., endemic to the coastal mountain range of Central Chile, is described. By using both nDNA and cpDNA, phylogenetic relationships of the new species were investigated. This new species belongs to the acaulescent/subacaulescent clade of Leucheria, which is congruent with the morphology of the species. A detailed description, distribution map, insights about its habitat, conservation status, and illustrations are provided. An updated key for acaulescent/subacaulescent species of Leucheria from Central Chile is also given.

A new species of Diplostephium (Asteraceae, Astereae) from the Atacama Desert, Chile.

Project description:A new species, Diplostephiumpaposanum S.T.Ibáñez & Muñoz-Schick, sp. nov., is described for Chile, extending the southern distribution of the genus. Its position within the genus was confirmed by morphological and molecular data, discussed here. The new species was found in a coastal environment, new to the genus, and is geographically far removed from the other Chilean species, which are from the Andes. The formation where it occurs, known as lomas, acts as a biodiversity refuge in hyperarid environments. The presence of D.paposanum in this environment contributes to the evidence of a floristic connection between the Atacama Desert and the Neotropical Andes.

Townsendialemhiensis (Asteraceae, Astereae): A narrowly endemic new species from Idaho, USA.

Project description:Townsendialemhiensis (Asteraceae) is described from the Lemhi Valley of east-central Idaho. From a genus with weak intrinsic isolating barriers, T.lemhiensis remains distinct apparently due to apomixis and to its isolation and habitat specialization on spatially limited occurrences of ashy white soils in the Lemhi Valley. Despite similarities to T.spathulata, this new species differs in its persistent pappus, fewer series of phyllaries and sericeous rather than long woolly hairs.

This new species shows a unique set of characters that clearly distinguish it from other species of Leucheria. Phylogenetic analyses place this perennial species close to annual species found in the pre-Andean environments of Central Chile. Johnstonellapunensis (Boraginaceae), a new species endemic to the dry Puna of Chile.

Project description:In an earlier molecular phylogenetic study, a sample of what was originally identified as Cryptanthahispida (Boraginaceae) from Chile, grouped with species of the genus Johnstonella. This sample was subsequently shown not to be C.hispida, but an undescribed species, endemic to the dry Puna of Chile. This new species is described here as Johnstonellapunensis, along with a key to all South American species of the genus. Johnstonellapunensis resembles other members of that genus in having an ovate fruit shape, ovate nutlets and a long style that extends beyond the nutlets. It is unusual in the genus in having a non-tuberculate, dimpled to rugulose nutlet surface sculpturing. Its closest relative within the genus is likely the South American J.diplotricha.

Melanoserispenghuana (Lactucinae, Cichorieae, Asteraceae), a new species from North-central Yunnan, China.

Project description:In this paper, we describe a new species, Melanoserispenghuana, from Mt. Jiaozi Xueshan located in North-central Yunnan, China. Despite its morphological similarities to M.likiangensis, M.penghuana exhibits distinct differences in leaf texture, shape of terminal lobes, indumentum of leaves, peduncles, and involucres, as well as the length of the achenes. Additionally, the conservation status of this species is classified as Vulnerable through data analysis from two field surveys.

Taxonomic dissection based on molecular evidence of the Eriosycecurvispina complex (Cactaceae): identifying nine endemic species from Central Chile.

Project description:Chile's distinctive flora, geographical isolation, and complex topography collectively contribute to a notable endemic species diversity, particularly within central regions identified as critical areas for biodiversity conservation. The cactus genus Eriosyce, as currently circumscribed, encompasses seven sections, with Eriosycesect.Horridocatus presenting a notably complex species group. This study investigates the E.curvispina complex, a member of the Notocacteae tribe common in central Chile, by incorporating new populations and examining phylogenetic relationships using four plastid and one nuclear molecular marker. The phylogenetic analysis of sampled individuals identified nine independent lineages, each warranting recognition at the species rank. Despite minimal morphological differences among taxa, morphological characters were utilized to support and stabilize the DNA-based phylogenetic hypothesis. The results highlight the high taxonomic diversity in these cactus lineages and have implications for the classification of the E.curvispina complex, including new combinations and proposals of conservation status.

Development of microsatellite markers in Robinsonia (Asteraceae) an endemic genus of the Juan Fernandez Archipelago, Chile.

Project description:Ten microsatellite markers were developed for Robinsonia (Asteraceae), a genus endemic to the Juan Fernández Archipelago, Chile. Polymorphisms of these markers were tested using one population each of R. evenia, R. gayana, and R. gracilis. The number of alleles for these markers ranged from 2 to 17 per locus, and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0 to 0.847 by population. A significant deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was observed in zero to two markers in each population, and no significant linkage disequilibrium between markers was detected. The markers reported here would be useful for evolutionary studies and conservation strategies in Robinsonia.
