The complete mitochondrial genome of the millipede Epanerchodus koreanus Verhoeff, 1937 collected in limestone cave of Korea (Polydesmidae: Polydesmida).

ABSTRACT: We have determined the second mitochondrial genome of Epanerchodus koreanus Verhoeff, 1937 collected in limestone cave of Korea. The circular mitochondrial genome of E. koreanus is 15,581 bp long. It includes 13 protein-coding genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. Its gene order was different from the rest three Polydesmida mitochondrial genomes, resulted from relocation of tRNAs, rRNAs, and ND1. The base composition was AT-biased (75.1%). Phylogenetic trees displayed phylogenetic relationship, which is congruent to previous study, except Sphaerotheriidae sp. clustering with Helminthomorpha.

We have determined the second mitochondrial genome of Epanerchodus koreanus Verhoeff, 1937 collected in limestone cave of Korea. The circular mitochondrial genome of E. koreanus is 15,581 bp long. The relationships between the congeners and their distributions are briefly discussed. All 13 species of the genus are keyed.

A revision of the millipede genus Riukiupeltis Verhoeff, 1939 (Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Paradoxosomatidae), with comments on the status of related species.

Project description:The East Asian millipede genus Riukiupeltis Verhoeff, 1939 is revised, and is restricted to a single species, Riukiupeltis jamashinai Verhoeff, 1939. Examination of the type specimens and freshly collected material from the Ryukyu Archipelago and Vietnam show that both subsequently allocated species, Riukiupeltis uenoi Murakami, 1975, and Riukiupeltis falcatus (originally Haplogonosoma falcatum Attems, 1953, reallocated by Jeekel 1968), do not belong to this genus; moreover, they are not even congeneric with each other. According to our morphological observations, including the gonopods, Riukiupeltis uenoi is closer to the widespread Chamberlinius hualienensis Wang, 1956, hence we propose the new combination Chamberlinius uenoi (Murakami, 1975), comb. n.Riukiupeltis falcatus, on the other hand, represents a separate, as yet monotypic, genus Simplogonomorphagen. n., distinct both from Haplogonosoma Brölemann, 1916 sensu Golovatch et al. (1995), and from Verhoeff's original Riukiupeltis. Additionally, Simplogonomorpha falcata (Attems, 1953), comb. n is re-described here based on fresh material from Vietnam. A key and colour habitus-illustrations to all three species are also provided here.

Project description:The hitherto monotypic diplopod genus Annamina contains now four species, including the revised type-species A. xanthoptera Attems, 1937, as well as A. attemsisp. n., A. irinaesp. n. and A. mikhaljovaesp. n., all from central or southern Vietnam. The genus is rediagnosed and a key to its constituent species given.

The millipede family Cryptodesmidae in Indochina (Diplopoda, Polydesmida).

Project description:In addition to two species of the diplopod family Cryptodesmidae already reported from Indochina, Trichopeltis kometis (Attems, 1938) and Ophrydesmus anichkini Golovatch, 2015, the fauna of that region is supplemented by three species: Niponia nodulosa Verhoeff, 1931, a millipede hitherto known only from southern Japan and Taiwan, is now recorded from Vietnam; Trichopeltis cavernicola sp. n. from Laos, the sixth species in that tropical Asian genus, is the first presumed troglobite to be described amongst the Asian cryptodesmids and shows several distinct troglomorphic features; and Circulocryptus gen. n., monobasic, which joins the tribe Dyakryptini, but differs from all three contribal genera (two monobasic from Borneo, and another, oligotypic, from New Guinea) primarily in the gonopods of Circulocryptus faillei sp. n., from Vietnam, being especially elaborate and subcircular, the telopodites strongly twisted, and the solenomere lying much more basally.

Project description:The millipede genus Aponedyopus is endemic to Taiwan and contains three species. All previously described nominal species are considered to represent one species: Aponedyopus montanus Verhoeff, 1939 (the type species), including Aponedyopus reesi (Wang, 1957) and Aponedyopus maculatus Takakuwa, 1942, syn. n. Two further species are described as new: Aponedyopus similissp. n. and Aponedyopus latilobatussp. n. The genus is re-diagnosed, all of its three species are keyed, and their distributions mapped.

Project description:Ammodesmidae are represented in western Africa by two species of a single genus, Ammodesmus Cook, 1896 (= Cenchrodesmus Cook, 1896, syn. n.). The type-species Ammodesmus granum Cook, 1896 (= Cenchrodesmus volutus Cook, 1896, syn. n.) is redescribed, based on neotype selection, as well as on additional samples, often containing numerous specimens, from Liberia, Guinea and the Ivory Coast. A new species is described from Mount Nimba, Guinea: Ammodesmus nimbasp. n.

A review of the Western Australian keeled millipede genus Boreohesperus (Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Paradoxosomatidae).

Project description:A taxonomic review of the endemic Western Australian millipede genus Boreohesperus Shear is presented in which six species are recognized: the type species, Boreohesperus capensis Shear, 1992, from North-West Cape, one new species, Boreohesperus dubitalis, from Barrow Island and four more new species from the Pilbara region, Boreohesperus curiosus, Boreohesperus delicatus, Boreohesperus furcosus and Boreohesperus undulatus. All six species have highly localized distributions, consistent with being short-range endemics. The nomenclature of the branches of the male gonopod is revised.

Topotypes of the millipede species Kronopolitesswinhoei (Pocock, 1895) reveal a new synonym with revalidation of Kronopolitessvenhedini (Verhoeff, 1934) (Diplopoda, Polydesmida, Paradoxosomatidae).

Project description:The millipede genus Kronopolites Attems, 1914 was originally described by monotypy with Strongylosomaswinhoei Pocock, 1895 as the type species, which was based on a single female specimen. Although this species has been believed to be widespread in China, there have been no confirmed reports of it from its type locality, leading to uncertainty about its taxonomic status. To address this issue, we newly sampled specimens from its type locality in Zhifu, Shandong Province, China. Our morphological analysis suggests that Kronopolitesswinhoei (Pocock, 1895) should be reclassified as Nedyopusswinhoei (Pocock, 1895) comb. nov. and is a senior synonym of Nedyopuspatrioticus Attems, 1898, syn. nov. The results also support the recovery of the name Kronopolitessvenhedini (Verhoeff, 1934) sp. reval., which was previously misidentified as a junior synonym under K.swinhoei. The former is now the genus type of Kronopolites.

Phylogenetic review of the millipede genus Cherokia Chamberlin, 1949 (Polydesmida, Xystodesmidae).

Project description:The millipede genus Cherokia Chamberlin, 1949 is a monospecific taxon, with the type species Cherokiageorgiana (Bollman, 1889). The last revision of the genus was made by Hoffman (1960) where he established three subspecies. Here we used molecular phylogenetics to assess the genus and evaluate whether it is a monophyletic group, and if the subspecies are each monophyletic. We included material from literature records and three natural history collections. Newly collected samples were obtained through a citizen science project. Morphological characters underlying subspecies groups-the shape of the paranota, body size, and coloration-were evaluated. A molecular phylogeny of the genus was estimated based on DNA sequences for seven gene loci, and a species delimitation analysis was used to evaluate the status of the subspecies. The documented geographical range of Cherokia in the United States was expanded to include a newly reported state record (Virginia) and about 160 new localities compared to the previously known range. Morphological characters, which included the shape of the paranota and body size that had been historically used to establish subspecies, showed clinal variation with a direct relationship with geographical distribution and elevation, but not with phylogeny. Coloration was highly variable and did not accord with geography or phylogeny. The phylogeny recovered Cherokia as a monophyletic lineage, and the species delimitation test supported the existence of a single species. The subspecies Cherokiageorgianaducilla (Chamberlin, 1939) and Cherokiageorgianalatassa Hoffman, 1960 have been synonymized with Cherokiageorgiana. The molecular and morphological evidence showed that Cherokia is a monospecific genus with the sole species, Cherokiageorgiana, being geographically widespread and highly variable in its morphology.
