Stepwise Fabrication of Co-Embedded Porous Multichannel Carbon Nanofibers for High-Efficiency Oxygen Reduction.

ABSTRACT: A novel nonprecious metal material consisting of Co-embedded porous interconnected multichannel carbon nanofibers (Co/IMCCNFs) was rationally designed for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis. In the synthesis, ZnCo₂O₄ was employed to form interconnected mesoporous channels and provide highly active Co₃O₄/Co core-shell nanoparticle-based sites for the ORR. The IMC structure with a large synergistic effect of the N and Co active sites provided fast ORR electrocatalysis kinetics. The Co/IMCCNFs exhibited a high half-wave potential of 0.82 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and excellent stability with a current retention up to 88% after 12,000 cycles in a current-time test, which is only 55% for 30 wt% Pt/C.

Coherent nanoscale cobalt/cobalt oxide heterostructures embedded in porous carbon for the oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:Cost-effective and efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are crucial for fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a Co/CoO/Co3O4 heterostructure embedded in a porous carbon matrix by refluxing and annealing. This composite exhibits several structural merits for catalyzing the ORR: (1) the existence of metallic Co and graphitic carbon enhanced the electrical conduction; (2) the porous, loose carbon network facilitated the electrolyte permeation and mass transport; (3) more importantly, the nanosized coherent CoO/Co3O4 heterojunctions with structural defects and oxygen vacancies enhanced the charge transport/separation at the interface and adsorption affinity to O2, thus promoting the ORR kinetics and lowering the reaction barrier. Consequently, the composite electrode manifests high electrocatalytic activity, attaining a current density of 6.7 mA cm-2 at -0.8 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), which is superior to pure CoO nanoparticles (4.7 mA cm-2), and has good methanol tolerance. The present strategy based on heterostructure and vacancy engineering may pave the way for the exploration of more advanced, low-cost electrocatalysts for electrochemical reduction and evolution processes.

Porous Carbon Networks Derived From Graphitic Carbon Nitride for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Great efforts have been dedicated to finding economic and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cell technology. Among various catalysts, N-doped carbon-based nanomaterials have attracted much attention due to low-cost, noble metal free, and good durability. Herein, we developed a facile and economic strategy to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon networks for efficient ORR application. The g-C3N4 is used as the template and N source, and dopamine is used as the carbon source. By simple hydrothermal treatment and sintering, N-doped carbon network structures with high specific surface area, effective ORR activity, and superior durability could be acquired. The present strategy is free of involving generally multistep, poisonous reagents, and complication of removing template for fabrication of 3D carbon structures.

Hierarchical Porous Carbon-PtPd Catalysts and Their Activity toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:PtPd bimetallic catalysts supported on hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) with different porous sizes were developed for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) toward fuel cell applications. The HPC pore size was controlled by using SiO2 nanoparticles as a template with different sizes, 287, 371, and 425 nm, to obtain three HPC materials denoted as HPC-1, HPC-2, and HPC-3, respectively. PtPd/HPC catalysts were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The electrochemical performance was examined by cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammetry. PtPd/HPC-2 turned out to be the most optimal catalyst with an electroactive surface area (ESA) of 40.2 m2 g-1 and a current density for ORR of -1285 A g-1 at 2 mV s-1 and 1600 rpm. In addition, we conducted a density functional theory computational study to examine the interactions between a PtPd cluster and a graphitic domain of HPC, as well as the interaction between the catalyst and the oxygen molecule. These results reveal the strong influence of the porous size (in HPC) and ESA values (in PtPd nanoparticles) in the mass transport process which rules the electrochemical performance.

Ultrafine platinum nanoparticles supported on N,S-codoped porous carbon nanofibers as efficient multifunctional materials for noticeable oxygen reduction reaction and water splitting performance.

Project description:The design of highly active, stable and durable platinum-based electrocatalysts towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and hydrogen adsorption has a high and urgent demand in fuel cells, water splitting and hydrogen storage. Herein, ultrafine platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) supported on N,S-codoped porous carbon nanofibers (Pt-N,S-pCNFs) hybrids were prepared through the electrospinning method coupled with hydrothermal and carbonation processes. The ultrafine Pt NPs are sufficiently dispersed and loaded on pCNFs and codoped with N and S, which can improve oxygen adsorption, afford more active sites, and greatly enhance electron mobility. The Pt-N,S-pCNFs hybrid achieves excellent activity and stability for ORR with ∼70 mV positive shift of onset potential compared to the commercial Pt/C-20 wt% electrocatalyst. The long-term catalytic durability with 89.5% current retention after a 10 000 s test indicates its remarkable ORR behavior. Pt-N,S-pCNFs also exhibits excellent HER and OER performance, and can be used as an efficient catalyst for water splitting. In addition, Pt-N,S-pCNFs exhibits an excellent hydrogen storage capacity of 0.76 wt% at 20 °C and 10 MPa. This work provides novel design strategies for the development of multifunctional materials as high-performance ORR catalysts, water splitting electrocatalysts and hydrogen storage materials.

Natural iron embedded hierarchically porous carbon with thin-thickness and high-efficiency microwave absorption properties.

Project description:The traditional strategy for fabricating transition metal/carbon composite microwave absorbing materials (MAMs) is to combine different metallic salts and carbon precursors via various techniques, in which raw material waste and environmental pollution are inevitable. In this work, without addition of any metallic salts, natural iron embedded hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) composites are synthesized for the first time via facile pyrolysis and subsequent "reductive activation" with KOH. Using KOH to react with carbon to generate H2 can not only generate abundant nanoscale structures in the composites, but also in situ reduce the natural iron present in the bio-precursor to Fe nanoparticles, which facilitates the interfacial polarization and conductive loss of samples considerably. In turn, the modulation of graphitization degree could be realized by simply adjusting the ingredient ratio. Due to the synergistic effect between porosity and graphitization degree, the impedance matching of composites can be well regulated. The reflection loss of HPC-1 achieves -53.6 dB and the effective absorption bandwidth can cover the whole X and Ku bands with a thickness of only 1.4-2.4 mm. This study may pave a way to research on using bio-precursors rich in iron to synthesize high-efficiency and thin-thickness microwave absorbers and promote the diversified development of bio-derived materials in a gentle and facile way.

Alternative view of oxygen reduction on porous carbon electrocatalysts: the substance of complex oxygen-surface interactions.

Project description:Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important energy-related process requiring alternative catalysts to expensive platinum-based ones. Although recently some advancements in carbon catalysts have been reported, there is still a lack of understanding which surface features might enhance their efficiency for ORR. Through a detailed study of oxygen adsorption on carbon molecular sieves and using inelastic neutron scattering, we demonstrated here that the extent of oxygen adsorption/interactions with surface is an important parameter affecting ORR. It was found that both the strength of O2 physical adsorption in small pores and its specific interactions with surface ether functionalities in the proximity of pores positively influence the ORR efficiency. We have shown that ultramicropores and hydrophobic surface rich in ether-based groups and/or electrons enhance ORR on carbon electrocatalysts and the performance parameters are similar to those measured on Pt/C with the number of electron transfer equal to 4.

Spinach-Derived Porous Carbon Nanosheets as High-Performance Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:Biomass-derived porous carbon materials are effective electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), with promising applications in low-temperature fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we developed a synthesis procedure that used spinach as a source of carbon, iron, and nitrogen for preparing porous carbon nanosheets and studied their ORR catalytic performance. These carbon sheets showed a very high ORR activity with a half-wave potential of +0.88 V in 0.1 M KOH, which is 20 mV more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. In addition, they showed a much better long-term stability than Pt/C and were insensitive to methanol. The remarkable ORR performance was attributed to the accessible high-density active sites that are primarily from Fe-N x moieties. This work paves the way toward the use of metal-enriching plants as a source for preparing porous carbon materials for electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Carbon Supported Engineering NiCo₂O₄ Hybrid Nanofibers with Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Project description:The design of cheap and efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is of a significant importance in sustainable and renewable energy technologies. Therefore, ORR catalysts with superb electrocatalytic activity and durability are becoming a necessity but still remain challenging. Herein, we report C/NiCo₂O₄ nanocomposite fibers fabricated by a straightforward electrospinning technique followed by a simple sintering process as a promising ORR electrocatalyst in alkaline condition. The mixed-valence oxide can offer numerous accessible active sites. In addition, the as-obtained C/NiCo₂O₄ hybrid reveals significantly remarkable electrocatalytic performance with a highly positive onset potential of 0.65 V, which is only 50 mV lower than that of commercially available Pt/C catalysts. The analyses indicate that C/NiCo₂O₄ catalyst can catalyze O₂-molecules via direct four electron pathway in a similar behavior as commercial Pt/C catalysts dose. Compared to single NiCo₂O₄ and carbon free NiCo₂O₄, the C/NiCo₂O₄ hybrid displays higher ORR current and more positive half-wave potential. The incorporated carbon matrices are beneficial for fast electron transfer and can significantly impose an outstanding contribution to the electrocatalytic activity. Results indicate that the synthetic strategy hold a potential as efficient route to fabricate highly active nanostructures for practical use in energy technologies.

Solar-Powered Photodegradation of Pollutant Dyes Using Silver-Embedded Porous TiO2 Nanofibers.

Project description:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanomaterials have been ubiquitously investigated as a photocatalyst for organic contaminant treatment in wastewater due to their exemplary semiconductor properties. However, their huge band gap remains a barrier for visible light absorption, limiting their utility in practical applications. The incorporation of noble metals in the TiO2 scaffold would help mitigate the problem via plasmonic resonance enhancements. Silver (Ag) is the chosen noble metal as it is relatively cheap and has great plasmonic effects. In this study, the use of electrospun Ag-embedded TiO2 nanofibers as a photocatalyst is shown to be effective in decomposing rhodamine B and methyl orange dyes under a solar simulator in 3 h, which is more efficacious as opposed to pristine TiO2 nanofibers. This showcases the potential of a simple and economic wastewater treatment system for the removal of organic pollutants.
