Gratitude Questionnaire-20 Items (G20): A Cross-Cultural, Psychometric and Crowdsourcing Analysis.

ABSTRACT: The use in psychology of crowdsourcing platforms as a method of data collection has been increasing in popularity because of its relative ease and versatility. Our goal is to adapt the Gratitude Questionnaire-20 Items (G20) to the English language by using data collected through a crowdsourcing platform. The G20 is a comprehensive instrument that takes in consideration the different basic processes of gratitude and assesses the construct's cognitive, evaluative, emotional, and behavioral processes. We test the psychometric properties of the English version of the G20 with a Prolific (ProA) user sample. We assess the adequacy of the G20 for the crowdsourcing population in its English version. A description of the characteristics of the participants is conducted. Reliability analyses reveal an optimal internal consistency of the adapted scale. The results are discussed from a cross-cultural vision of gratitude. We conclude that the Gratitude Questionnaire-20 Items (G20), adapted to English with an American sample, is a psychometrically strong instrument to measure gratitude using crowdsourcing platforms for data collection and, therefore, a reference and useful tool in future research.

Project description:BackgroundSelf-reported measures are relevant both for the clinic and for health evaluation because they provide an interpretation of quality parameters. Women who experience labour can express themselves through these measures, identifying indicators that need improvement.ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to adapt the Childbirth Experience Questionnaire to the Portuguese context and to determine its psychometric properties.MethodA methodological study carried out with a convenience sample where the participants were 161 female users of a hospital in southern Portugal. They were aged between 20 and 43 years (M = 31.05, SD = 4.87) and answered a questionnaire approximately 48 h postpartum, preserving the ethical principles. The original instrument, with 22 items, underwent the linguistic and cultural adequacy process.ResultsFactor analysis with Varimax rotation was performed, revealing a set of 19 items with factor weights above .400. The set of items remained four-dimensional as the original, explaining 62.517% of the variance. In the retest, the reliability results showed that similar characteristics to the original study are maintained in the two subscales that express 'Participation' (three items) and 'Professional Support' (four items), with internal consistency values of .807 and .782. The 'Own Performance' and 'Own Threshold' subscales were elaborated from the results of the Varimax rotation, presenting Cronbach's alpha coefficients of .840 and 714, respectively. The total scale showed alpha values of .873 and .823 in the test and retest, respectively. Time stability showed a positive association, with r = .659 (p < .001). Accuracy through the split-half method reached an alpha value of .880 with Spearman-Brown correction. The floor effect was high in the 'Participation' subscale, both in the test and in the retest. Convergent validity between the instrument and the 'Index of Strategies for Pain Relief in Labour' discrete variable showed a Spearman's rho value of .209 (p = .011) in the total scale. In discriminating validity, the Mann-Whitney test reveals that the women who recognize interactions with the midwife have more favourable scores in Childbirth Experience Questionnaire (U = 2748.000; Z = 2.905; p = .004).ConclusionThe current version in European Portuguese suggests that it is a valid and reliable measure. This study may facilitate other validation processes in Lusophony countries.

Project description:BackgroundDespite the general agreement regarding the central role of the clinical learning environment in graduate medical education, its assessment remains challenging owing to the lack of available standardized measures. We report on the cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric assessment of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of Seelig's Resident Questionnaire.MethodsThe present study was performed in two steps. First, a cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the Resident Questionnaire was conducted through multiple translations, synthesis of versions, back-translation, content validation, and face validation. Subsequently, a sample of 288 (72%) resident physicians enrolled in 40 residency programs at a Brazilian university hospital completed the following measures: 1) the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Resident Questionnaire (for factor analysis and to determine internal consistency, reliability, and validity); 2) three existing, validated psychometric measures (to determine convergent and divergent validity); and 3) a self-report questionnaire.ResultsConfirmatory factor analysis results provided support for the three-dimensional model of the Resident Questionnaire in use on a sample of Brazilian resident physicians, having been previously verified for use in American samples. All three factors (emotional distress, learning environment satisfaction, and workload satisfaction) verified in the confirmatory factor analysis showed good internal consistency (α > .80), reliability (Raykov's rho > .80), and correlations in the expected directions and magnitude with measures of depressive symptoms, duty hours, organizational conditions, and emotional exhaustion.ConclusionsThis study is the first to adapt a measure of the clinical learning environment of residency programs into Brazilian Portuguese. Our findings suggest that the adapted version of the Resident Questionnaire is valid and reliable for assessing Brazilian residency programs. This free, easy-access, and fast-application instrument may be a useful standardized measure for research and educational purposes concerning the clinical learning environments of resident physicians.

Project description:Background: The ICD-11 post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD diagnoses have been examined in several studies using the International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ). The cross-cultural validity of the ITQ has not previously been studied using item responses theory methods focused on the issue of equal item functioning and thus comparability of scores across language groups.Objective: To investigate the cross-cultural validity of the ITQ scales considering specifically local independence of items and differential item functioning (DIF) in a cross-cultural sample of refugees.Method: Data from 490 treatment-seeking refugees were included, covering Danish, Arabic, and Bosnian languages and different levels of interpreter-assisted administration. Rasch and graphical log-linear Rasch models were used.Results: There was strong local dependence among items from the same symptom clusters in the PTSD and disorders in self-organization (DSO) scales, except between affective dysregulation items. Weak local dependence was discovered between an item from the affective dysregulation cluster and an item from the disturbed relationship cluster. There was no evidence of DIF related to language or interpreter assistance. There was evidence of DIF for two PTSD items relative to gender and time since the traumatic event. The targeting of the scales to the study population was not optimal. Reliability varied from 0.55 to 0.78 for subgroups.Conclusions: The PTSD and the DSO scales have stable psychometric properties across the Danish, Arabic, and Bosnian language versions and different levels of assisted administration. Scores are comparable across these groups. However, DIF relative to gender and time since trauma introduces considerable measurement bias. DIF-adjusted summed scale scores or estimated person parameters should be used to avoid measurement bias. Future research should investigate whether scales including more and/or alternative items that require higher levels of PTSD and DSO to be endorsed will improve targeting and measurement precision for refugee populations.

Project description:BackgroundThe intermittent self-catheterization questionnaire (ISC-Q) is a valid and reliable tool to assess the quality of life (QOL) in patients with neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) who engage in ISC. The aim of this research is to culturally adapt the ISC-Q and evaluate its psychometric properties within the Chinese patient population.MethodsThe cross-sectional research was meticulously conducted in two pivotal stages: initially, the focus was on cross-cultural adaptation, followed by an extensive phase of psychometric testing. This comprehensive analysis involved 405 Chinese patients with NLUTD who use ISC. Various analyses, including evaluations of the floor and ceiling effects, item analysis, content validity, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA and CFA), assessments of convergent, discriminant, and criterion validity. Additionally, Cronbach's alpha was utilized to determine internal consistency, and test-retest reliability was measured using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC).ResultsNo floor and ceiling effects were observed. The content validity index was 0.967. The EFA identified four factors, accounting for 64.953% of the total variance, and this four-factor structure was confirmed by the CFA. The fit indices in CFA were favorable, with χ2/df = 1.999, root mean square error of approximation = 0.070, comparative fit index = 0.916, Tucker-Lewis index = 0.900, goodness-of-fit index = 0.863, and incremental fit index = 0.917. The average variance extracted for the four factors ranged from 0.466 to 0.565, with composite reliability values ranging from 0.776 to 0.859. The ISC-Q showed a positive correlation with the intermittent self-catheterization acceptance questionnaire (r = 0.557, P < 0.001). The ICC overall Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the questionnaire was 0.821, and the for test-retest reliability was 0.951 (95% CI [0.900-0.976] P < 0.001).ConclusionThe validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the ISC-Q have been verified, making it suitable for measuring the QOL in NLUTD patients who practice ISC.
