Tb3+-doped fluorescent glass for biology.

ABSTRACT: Optical investigation and manipulation constitute the core of biological experiments. Here, we introduce a new borosilicate glass material that contains the rare-earth ion terbium(III) (Tb3+), which emits green fluorescence upon blue light excitation, similar to green fluorescent protein (GFP), and thus is widely compatible with conventional biological research environments. Micropipettes made of Tb3+-doped glass allowed us to target GFP-labeled cells for single-cell electroporation, single-cell transcriptome analysis (Patch-seq), and patch-clamp recording under real-time fluorescence microscopic control. The glass also exhibited potent third harmonic generation upon infrared laser excitation and was usable for online optical targeting of fluorescently labeled neurons in the in vivo neocortex. Thus, Tb3+-doped glass simplifies many procedures in biological experiments.

Eu3+, Tb3+- and Er3+, Yb3+-Doped α-MoO3 Nanosheets for Optical Luminescent Thermometry.

Project description:Here we report a novel synthesis approach for the preparation of α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials employing a two-step synthesis. Additionally, in this work the α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials are reported as potential optical thermometers for the first time. In this synthesis approach, first MoS2 2D nanosheets were prepared, which were further heat treated to obtain α-MoO3. These materials were fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and luminescence spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent luminescence measurements were carried out to determine the optical thermometric properties of two different types of α-MoO3:Ln3+ materials (Eu3+/Tb3+ downshifting and Er3+/Yb3+ upconversion luminescence systems). We demonstrate in this study that this class of material could be a potential candidate for temperature-sensing applications.

Size-Dependent Nonlinear Optical Properties of Gd2O2S:Tb3+ Scintillators and Their Doped Gel Glasses.

Project description:With the advancement of ultra-fast and high-energy pulsed laser output, lasers have caused serious harm to precision instruments and human eyes. Therefore, the development of optical limiting materials with a fast response, low optical limiting threshold, and high damage threshold are important. In this work, for the first time, it is reported that phosphors Gd2O2S:Tb3+(GOS) displays exceptional functionality in laser protection. GOS with sizes of 11 μm, 1 μm, and 0.45 μm are prepared. Based on the optical limiting and Z-scan technology systems under 532 nm and 1064 nm nanosecond laser excitation, the nonlinear optical properties of GOS are investigated. It is found that GOS exhibits outstanding optical limiting properties. In addition, the optical limiting response of GOS is size-dependent. Concerning the largest particle size, GOS has the best nonlinear optical response, while the precursor shows no nonlinear optical performance. Meanwhile, GOS doped gel glass also displays excellent optical limiting properties with high transmittance, which preliminarily validates the application of GOS and other scintillators in nonlinear optics and encourages more research to better realize the potential of GOS.

Zinc Oxide-Doped Antibacterial Soda Lime Glass Produced as a Glass Container.

Project description:The aim of this study is to produce and characterize glass materials, which have an enhanced antibacterial property by the conventional melting method. Container glass compositions including different amounts of zinc oxide (ZnO) (5.0, 7.5, and 10.0%) were prepared and melted to be able to obtain the antibacterial glass. The Release and antibacterial tests, which were performed after the melting process, showed that the glass doped with 5% ZnO was the most appropriate composition according to test results (99.82% Escherichia coli inactivation) and its raw materials' costs. Physical, thermal, and mechanical properties such as thermal expansion coefficient (86.1 × 10-7/°C), density (2.523 g/cm3), refractive index (1.5191), hardness (596 kg/mm2), and elastic modulus (5.84 GPa) of the glass doped with 5% ZnO were determined, and the results showed that the obtained antibacterial glass sample is suitable to be used as a glass container. HighTemperature Melting Observation System studies were performed on the produced antibacterial glass composition, and it was found that the antibacterial glass can be produced in soda lime glass furnaces without changing any furnace design and production parameters. This antibacterial glass can be a remarkable product for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Magnetically sensitive nanodiamond-doped tellurite glass fibers.

Project description:Traditional optical fibers are insensitive to magnetic fields, however many applications would benefit from fiber-based magnetometry devices. In this work, we demonstrate a magnetically sensitive optical fiber by doping nanodiamonds containing nitrogen vacancy centers into tellurite glass fibers. The fabrication process provides a robust and isolated sensing platform as the magnetic sensors are fixed in the tellurite glass matrix. Using optically detected magnetic resonance from the doped nanodiamonds, we demonstrate detection of local magnetic fields via side excitation and longitudinal collection. This is a first step towards intrinsically magneto-sensitive fiber devices with future applications in medical magneto-endoscopy and remote mineral exploration sensing.

Fluorescent SiO2@Tb3+(PET-TEG)3Phen Hybrids as Nucleating Additive for Enhancement of Crystallinity of PET.

Project description:A hybrid polymer of SiO2@Tb3+(poly(ethylene terephthalate)-tetraglycol)3 phenanthroline (SiO2@Tb3+(PET-TEG)3Phen) was synthesized by mixing of inorganic SiO2 nanoparticles with polymeric segments of PET-TEG, whereas PET-TEG was achieved through multi-step functionalization strategy. Tb3+ ions and β-diketonate ligand Phen were added in resulting material. The experimental results demonstrated that it was well blended with PET as a robust additive, and not only promoted the crystallinity, but also possessed excellent luminescence properties. An investigation of the mechanism revealed that the SiO2 nanoparticles functioned as a crystallization promotor; the Tb3+ acted as the fluorescent centre; and the PET-TEG segments played the role of linker and buffer, providing better compatibility of PET matrix with the inorganic component. This work demonstrated that hybrid polymers are appealing as multifunctional additives in the polymer processing and polymer luminescence field.

Fluorescent silk cocoon creating fluorescent diatom using a "Water glass-fluorophore ferry".

Project description:Fluorophores are ubiquitous in nature. Naturally occurring fluorophores are exceptionally stable and have high quantum yield. Several natural systems have acquired fluorescent signature due to the presence of these fluorophores. Systematic attempt to harvest these fluorophores from natural systems could reap rich commercial benefit to bio-imaging industry. Silk cocoon biomaterial is one such example of natural system, which has acquired a fluorescent signature. The objective of this study is to develop simple, rapid, commercially viable technique to isolate silk cocoon membrane fluorophores and exploring the possibility of using them as fluorescent dye in bio-imaging. Here, we report an innovative water glass (Na2SiO3) based strategy to isolate the silk cocoon fluorophores. Isolated fluorophore is majorly quercetin derivatives and exhibited remarkable photo- and heat stability. Fluorescence and mass spectrometric analysis confirmed presence of a quercetin derivative. We further used this fluorophore to successfully label the silicate shell of diatom species Nitzschia palea.

Investigation on the Luminescence Properties of InMO4 (M = V5+, Nb5+, Ta5+) Crystals Doped with Tb3+ or Yb3+ Rare Earth Ions.

Project description:We explore the potential of Tb- and Yb-doped InVO4, InTaO4, and InNbO4 for applications as phosphors for light-emitting sources. Doping below 0.2% barely change the crystal structure and Raman spectrum but provide optical excitation and emission properties in the visible and near-infrared (NIR) spectral regions. From optical measurements, the energy of the first/second direct band gaps was determined to be 3.7/4.1 eV in InVO4, 4.7/5.3 in InNbO4, and 5.6/6.1 eV in InTaO4. In the last two cases, these band gaps are larger than the fundamental band gap (being indirect gap materials), while for InVO4, a direct band gap semiconductor, the fundamental band gap is at 3.7 eV. As a consequence, this material shows a strong self-activated photoluminescence centered at 2.2 eV. The other two materials have a weak self-activated signal at 2.2 and 2.9 eV. We provide an explanation for the origin of these signals taking into account the analysis of the polyhedral coordination around the pentavalent cations (V, Nb, and Ta). Finally, the characteristic green (5D4 → 7F J ) and NIR (2F5/2 → 2F7/2) emissions of Tb3+ and Yb3+ have been analyzed and explained.

Continuous spatial field confocal thermometry using lanthanide doped tellurite glass.

Project description:Distinguishing between microscopic variances in temperature in both space and time with high precision can open up new opportunities in optical sensing. In this paper, we present a novel approach to optically measure temperature from the fluorescence of erbium:ytterbium doped tellurite glass, with fast temporal resolution at micron-scale localisation over an area with sub millimetre spatial dimensions. This confocal-based approach provides a micron-scale image of temperature variations over a 200 μ m × 200 μ m field of view at sub-1 second time intervals. We test our sensing platform by monitoring the real-time evaporation of a water droplet over a wide field of view and track it's evaporative cooling effect on the glass where we report a net temperature change of 6.97 K ± 0.03 K. This result showcases a confocal approach to thermometry to provide high temporal and spatial resolution over a microscopic field of view with the goal of providing real-time measures of temperature on the micro-scale.

Research on Molecular Structure and Electronic Properties of Ln3+ (Ce3+, Tb3+, Pr3+)/Li+ and Eu2+ Co-Doped Sr2Si5N8 via DFT Calculation.

Project description:We use density functional theory (DFT) to study the molecular structure and electronic band structure of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+ doped with trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+ = Ce3+, Tb3+, Pr3+). Li+ was used as a charge compensator for the charge imbalance caused by the partial replacement of Sr2+ by Ln3+. The doping of Ln lanthanide atom causes the structure of Sr2Si5N8 lattice to shrink due to the smaller atomic radius of Ln3+ and Li+ compared to Sr2+. The doped structure's formation energy indicates that the formation energy of Li+, which is used to compensate for the charge imbalance, is the lowest when the Sr2 site is doped. Thus, a suitable Li+ doping site for double-doped lanthanide ions can be provided. In Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+, the doped Ce3+ can occupy partly the site of Sr12+ ([SrN8]), while Eu2+ accounts for Sr12+ and Sr22+ ([SrN10]). When the Pr3+ ion is selected as the dopant in Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+, Pr3+ and Eu2+ would replace Sr22+ simultaneously. In this theoretical model, the replacement of Sr2+ by Tb3+ cannot exist reasonably. For the electronic structure, the energy level of Sr2Si5N8:Eu2+/Li+ doped with Ce3+ and Pr3+ appears at the bottom of the conduction band or in the forbidden band, which reduces the energy bandgap of Sr2Si5N8. We use DFT+U to adjust the lanthanide ion 4f energy level. The adjusted 4f-CBM of CeSr1LiSr1-Sr2Si5N8 is from 2.42 to 2.85 eV. The energy range of 4f-CBM in PrSr1LiSr1-Sr2Si5N8 is 2.75-2.99 eV and its peak is 2.90 eV; the addition of Ce3+ in EuSr1CeSr1LiSr1 made the 4f energy level of Eu2+ blue shift. The addition of Pr3+ in EuSr2PrSr2LiSr1 makes part of the Eu2+ 4f energy level blue shift. Eu2+ 4f energy level in EuSr2CeSr1LiSr1 is not in the forbidden band, so Eu2+ is not used as the emission center.
