Genetically defined amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), collectively named c9ALS/FTD, are triggered by hexanucleotide GGGGCC repeat expansions [r(G<sub>4</sub>C<sub>2</sub>)<sup>exp</sup>] within the <i>C9orf72</i> gene.
