DFT Study of MAX Phase Surfaces for Electrocatalyst Support Materials in Hydrogen Fuel Cells.

ABSTRACT: In moving towards a greener global energy supply, hydrogen fuel cells are expected to play an increasingly significant role. New catalyst support materials are being sought with increased durability. MAX phases show promise as support materials due to their unique properties. The layered structure gives rise to various potential (001) surfaces. DFT is used to determine the most stable (001) surface terminations of Ti2AlC, Ti3AlC2 and Ti3SiC2. The electrical resistivities calculated using BoltzTraP2 show good agreement with the experimental values, with resistivities of 0.460 µΩ m for Ti2AlC, 0.370 µΩ m for Ti3AlC2 and 0.268 µΩ m for Ti3SiC2. Surfaces with Al or Si at the surface and the corresponding Ti surface show the lowest cleavage energy of the different (001) surfaces. MAX phases could therefore be used as electrocatalyst support materials, with Ti3SiC2 showing the greatest potential.

Project description:The successful large-scale implementation of hydrogen as an energy vector requires high performance electrodes and catalysts made of abundant materials. Rational materials design strategies are the most efficient means of reaching this goal. Here we present a study on the adsorption of H-atoms onto fcc transition metal surfaces and propose descriptors for the rational design of electrodes and catalysts by means of correlations between fundamental properties of the materials and among other properties, their experimentally measured performance as hydrogen evolution electrodes (HEE). A large set of quantum mechanical modelling data at the DFT level was produced, covering the adsorption of H-atoms onto the most stable surfaces (100), (110) and (111) of: Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Ir, Ni, Pd, Pt and Rh. For each material and surface, a coverage dependent set of minimum energy structures was produced and chemical potentials for adsorption of H-atoms were obtained. Averaging procedures are here proposed to approach modelling to the experiments. Several correlations between the computed data and experimentally measured quantities are done to validate our methodology: surface plane dependent adsorption energies, chemical potentials and experimentally determined surface energies and work functions. We search for descriptors of catalytic activity by testing correlations between the DFT data obtained from our averaging procedures and experimental data on HEE performance. Our methodology allows us to obtain linear correlations between the adsorption energy of H-atoms and the exchange current density (i0) in a HEE, avoiding the volcano-like plots. We show that the chemical potential has limitations as a descriptor of i0 because it reaches an early plateau in terms of i0. Simple quantities obtained from database data such as the first stage electronegativity (χ) as devised by Mulliken has a strong linear correlation i0. With a quantity we denominate modified second-stage electronegativity (χ2m) we can reproduce the typical volcano plot in a correlation with i0. A theoretical and conceptual framework is presented. It shows that both χ and χ2m, that depend on the first ionization potential, second ionization potential and electron affinity of the elements can be used as descriptors in rational design of electrodes or of catalysts for hydrogen systems.

Project description:A DFT study of the synthesized MAX phase Zr2SeC has been carried out for the first time to explore its physical properties for possible applications in many sectors. The studied properties are compared with prior known MAX phase Zr2SC. The structural parameters (lattice constants, volume, and atomic positions) are observed to be consistent with earlier results. The band structure and density of states (DOS) are used to explore the metallic conductivity, anisotropic electrical conductivity, and the dominant role of Zr-d states to the electrical conductivity at the Fermi level. Analysis of the peaks in the DOS and charge density mapping (CDM) of Zr2SeC and Zr2SC revealed the possible variation of the mechanical properties and hardness among them. The mechanical stability has been checked using elastic constants. The values of the elastic constants, elastic moduli and hardness parameters of Zr2SeC are found to be lowered than those of Zr2SC. The anisotropic behavior of the mechanical properties has been studied and analyzed. Technologically important thermodynamic properties such as the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC), Debye temperature (Θ D), entropy (S), heat capacity at constant volume (C v), Grüneisen parameter (γ) along with volume (V) and Gibbs free energy (G) are investigated as a function of both temperature (from 0 to 1600 K) and pressure (from 0 to 50 GPa). Besides, the Θ D, minimum thermal conductivity (K min), melting point (T m), and γ have also been calculated at room temperature and found to be lowered for Zr2SeC compared to Zr2SC owing to their close relationship with the mechanical parameters. The value of the Θ D, K min, T m, and TEC suggest Zr2SeC as a thermal barrier coating material. The optical properties such as dielectric constant (real and imaginary part), refractive index, extinction coefficient, absorption coefficient, photoconductivity, reflectivity, and loss function of Zr2SeC are computed and analyzed to reveal its possible applications.
