The complete chloroplast genome sequence of Camellias (Camellia fangchengensis).

ABSTRACT: Camellia fangchengensis is endemic to Fangcheng, Guangxi Province, China, and its populations have been shrinking. In the present study, we report the complete chloroplast genome of C. fangchengensis using HiSeq 2500 sequencing technology. The complete chloroplast genome length is 157,095 bp. The chloroplast genome has 43 tRNA genes, six rRNA genes, and 97 protein-coding genes. Moreover, 18 genes have multiple copies in the chloroplast genome. A total of 146 genes are present in the chloroplast genome. Maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree based on 11 complete chloroplast genomes revealed that C. fangchengensis is closely related to C. pitardii. The complete chloroplast genome of C. fangchengensis would help to conserving the precious natural populations.

Project description:Abstract Camellia atrothea H.T. Chang, H.S. Wang & B.H. Chen 1983 is a native Camellia species in China, which has significant economic and breeding values. Here, we assembled and analyzed the complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. atrothea based on the whole genome sequencing data from Illumina NovaSeq6000 platform. Results show that the complete chloroplast genome of C. atrothea is 157,099 bp in length, and comprises a large single-copy (LSC, 86,643 bp) region, a small single-copy (SSC, 18,276 bp) region, and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs, 26,090 bp) region. Annotation of the C. atrothea chloroplast genome predicts a total of 133 genes, including 88 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 transfer RNA genes. The overall GC content accounts for 37.30% of the genome, which is clearly consistent with that of other previously published Camellia species from section Thea. Phylogenetic analyses of the whole chloroplast genome sequences of 14 Camellia species using Actinidia chinensis as outgroup reveals that C. atrothea has a close relationship with C. leptophylla.

Project description:Camellia granthamiana is a rare and endangered plant peculiar to China, and a total of 5 plants have been found at present. Based on the next generation sequencing, the whole chloroplast (Cp) genome of (Camellia granthamiana Sealy) of Camellia oleifera was constructed.In this study, the complete chloroplast (cp) genome of Camellia granthamiana was assembled based on next generation sequencing.The cp genome was 157,001 bp in length, including a large single copy (LSC) region of 70,387 bp, a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,296 bp and a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 52,082 bp. The genome contained 135 genes, including 90 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes and 8 ribosomal RNA genes. The majority of these gene species occurred as a single copy.

The complete chloroplast genome sequence of the Japanese Camellia (Camellia japonica L.).

Project description:The complete chloroplast genome sequence of valuable ornamental tree, Camellia japonica L. (Theaceae), was determined. The genome size was 156,971 bp in length, containing a pair of 25,798 bp inverted repeat (IR) regions, which were separated by small and large single copy regions (SSC and LSC) of 18,394 and 86,673 bp, respectively. The cp genome contained 134 genes, including 91 coding genes, six rRNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes. The overall GC content of the chloroplast genome was 37.3%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the position of C. japonica being sister to the clade containing C. crapnelliana and C. oleifera (subgenus Camellia).

Phylogenetic analysis among four Camellia species and 11 other close species reveals a close relationship between C. tetracocca and C. gymnogyna.

The complete chloroplast genome is 157,073 bp in length, which consisted of a pair of inverted repeat regions of 26,055 bp (IRa and IRb) separated by a large single-copy region (LSC) of 86,680 bp and a small single-copy region (SSC) of 18,283 bp. The C. rhytidophylla chloroplast genome encodes 135 genes, including 87 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, 8 rRNA genes, and 3 pseudogenes. Sequence comparison analysis with the chloroplast sequences of 28 other Camellia plants found that C. rhytidophylla had the closest relationship with C. szechuanensis. This study provides a theoretical basis for the analysis of the distant relationship of Camellia.

Complete chloroplast genome of a cultivated oil camellia species, Camellia gigantocarpa.

Project description:Camellia gigantocarpa Hu et T. C. Huang, belonging to the Theaceae family, is an excellent landscape tree species with high ornamental value. It is also an important woody oil-bearing plant with high economic value. This study reports the first complete chloroplast genome sequence of C. gigantocarpa (GenBank accession number: MZ054232). Its whole chloroplast genome is 156,953 bp long with an overall GC content of 37.31%, which is composed of a large single copy region (86,631 bp), a small single copy region (18,402 bp), and a pair of inverted repeat regions (25,960 bp each). A total of 135 genes were predicted in this genome, namely eight ribosomal RNA genes, 37 transfer RNA genes, and 90 protein-coding genes. Based on maximum likelihood analysis results, we found that the Camellia species are clustered into a distinct branch, and the phylogenetic relationships among C. gigantocarpa, C. crapnelliana, and C. kissii were the closest.

Project description:To understand genetic background and phylogenetic position of Camellia tachangensis, we determined its complete chloroplast genome sequence which is 157,026 bp in length with overall GC content of 36.7%. It has four sub regions: a large single-copy (LSC) region (86,669 bp) and a small single-copy (SSC) region (18,253 bp) are separated by two inverted repeat (IR) regions (26,052 bp each). A total of 129 genes were annotated, containing 86 protein-coding genes, 35 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic trees showed C. tachangensis clustered with Camellia gymnogyna and Camellia taliensis and separated from Camellia sinensis and its two varieties, Camellia sinensis var. assamica and Camellia sinensis var. pubilimba.

Characterization of the complete chloroplast genome sequence of Camellia oleifera in Hainan, China.

Project description:Camellia oleifera, an evergreen small tree or shrub with high medicinal and ecological values, is mainly distributed in subtropical montane regions of China. In this study, complete chloroplast genome was reported for Camellia oleifera in Hainan, China. The results showed that the whole genome was 156,996 bp in length, including a pair of inverted repeats (IRs) of 26,025 bp, a large single copy (LSC) region of 86,649 bp and a small single copy (SSC) region of 18,297 bp. The genome contained a total of 115 different genes, including 81 protein-coding genes, 30 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes. Among these genes, eight genes contain a single intron and two genes contain two introns. The total GC content of Camellia oleifera was 37.29%. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic analysis based on 21 chloroplast genomes showed that Camellia oleifera was similar to Camellia danzaiensis.
