The first complete mitochondrial genome from the family Solasteridae, Crossaster papposus (Echinodermata, Asteroidea).

ABSTRACT: The common sunstar, Crossaster papposus, belongs to the family Solasteridae whose ordinal classification has been unstable. Here, for the first time, we assembled and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of the common sunstar, C. papposus Linnaeus, 1767. The circular genome of C. papposus is 16,335 bp in length and contains 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, a control region, and large and small ribosomal subunits. The overall genomic structure and gene arrangement were identical to the reported mitochondrial genomes of sea star species, and a phylogenetic analysis of 13 PCGs recovers a closest relationship with the derived cluster of the paraphyletic order Valvatida.

Project description:In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of Distolasterias nipon belonging to the class Asteroidea in the phylum Echinodermata. The complete mitogenome of D. nipon was 16,193 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and 2 rRNAs. The orders of PCGs and rRNAs were identical to those of the eight recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. The phylogenetic tree determined by the maximum likelihood method revealed that D. nipon was clearly grouped with Aphelasterias japonica and Asterias amurensis, which belong to the family Asteriidae.

Complete mitochondrial genome analysis of Aquilonastra batheri (Echinodermata, Asteroidea, Valvatida).

Project description:In this study, we determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequences of Aquilonastra batheri. This is the first study on mitochondrial genome sequencing of the genus Aquilonastra belonging to the family Asterinidae, order Valvatida, and class Asteroidea. The complete mitogenome of A. batheri was 16,463 bp and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs, and two rRNAs. The orders of PCGs and rRNA genes were identical to those of nine recorded mitogenomes of asteroids. The phylogenetic tree determined by the maximum likelihood method revealed that A. batheri was clearly grouped with Patiria pectinifera, which belongs to the family Asterinidae.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the sea star Archaster typicus (Asteroidea: Archasteridae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome of the widespread and common Indo-Pacific sea star Archaster typicus has been sequenced in this study. The mitogenome is 16,230 base pairs (bp) in length, with 13 protein coding genes (PCGs), 22 tRNAs and 2 rRNAs. Gene order of its PCGs and rRNAs matches those of nine other asteroid taxa included for comparison in this study, and it has a similar nucleotide composition of 33.08% A, 26.38% T, 25.53% C and 15.01% G nucleotides. Phylogenetic analyses place A. typicus as the sister group to Acanthaster spp., consistent with previous inferences.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Stichopus variegatus (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) and phylogenetic studies of Echinodermata.

Project description:At present, there exist some confusing issues on the species classification and phylogeny in Echinodermata. In this study, we first determined and described the complete mitochondrial genome of Stichopus variegatus. The complete mitogenome sequence had a circular mapping molecular with the total length of 16,315 bp and contained 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and a putative control region. To further validate the newly determined sequences, phylogenetic trees involving all the Holothuroidea and other Echinodermata species available in GenBank Database were constructed. These results would be used for the species identification and further phylogenetic studies of Echinodermata.

On the genus Crossaster (Echinodermata: Asteroidea) and its distribution.

Project description:Several starfish (Echinodermata, Asteroidea) are keystone species of marine ecosystems, but some of the species are difficult to identify using morphological criteria only. The common sunstar, Crossaster papposus (Linnaeus, 1767), is a conspicuous species with a wide circumboreal distribution. In 1900, a closely similar species, C. squamatus (Döderlein, 1900) was described from the NE Atlantic Ocean, but subsequent authors have differed in their views on whether this is a valid taxon or rather an ecotype associated with temperature variations. We assessed the differentiating morphological characters of specimens from Norwegian and Greenland waters identified as C. papposus and C. squamatus and compared their distributions in the NE Atlantic as inferred from research cruises. The field data show that C. papposus is found mainly in temperate and shallow waters, whereas C. squamatus resides on the shelf-break in colder, mixed water masses. Intraspecific diversity and interspecific genetic differentiation of the two putative species, and their phylogenetic relationships to several Crossaster congeners worldwide, were explored using mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequences. The molecular evidence suggests that C. papposus is the more diverse and geographically structured taxon, in line with its wide distribution. C. papposus and C. squamatus are closely related, yet clearly distinct taxa, while C. papposus and C. multispinus H.L. Clark, 1916, the latter from the South Pacific Ocean, are closely related, possibly sister taxa.

Characterization of the complete mitochondrial genome of Thyonella gemmata (Echinodermata: Cucumariidae).

Project description:Thyonella gemmata , also known as the Green sea cucumber, is a biomedically and ecologically important species. In this study, the complete mitogenome of T. gemmata (Echinodermata: Holothuroidea) collected from the Florida Panhandle, USA is reported. The mitochondrial genome of T. gemmata consisted of 15,696 base pairs, and was composed of 36.10% A, 28.27% T, 23.18% C, and 12.45% G. There were 13 protein coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and 2 rRNA genes within the mitogenome of T. gemmata. Mapping out the complete mitochondrial genome of T. gemmata, will help aid in future evolutionary studies and can be applied to future phylogenetic research of holothurians and related species.

Complete mitochondrial genome of the crinoid echinoderm, Florometra species (Echinodermata, Crinoidea).

Project description:In this study, we report the sequence of the mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the crinoid echinoderm, Florometra species (Echinodermata, Crinoidea). The complete mitogenome of Florometra sp. was 15,792 base pairs long and was composed of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, 22 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes, and three regions of unassigned sequence (UAS) including one putative control region. Unique nucleotide composition, a clear positive bias for T with an apparent loss of C in PCGs as observed in the Crinoidea mitogenomes, was also seen in the Florometra sp. mitogenome (45% T, 12% C). Phylogenetic analysis with the concatenated nucleotide sequences of entire PCGs of echinoderms confirmed that Florometra sp. is highly related to F. serratissima within the family Crinoidea.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Poraniopsis inflata (Asteroidea: Valvatida: Poraniidae) from Dokdo Island, Korea.

Project description:This study presents the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Poraniopsis inflata, providing valuable information on its genetic and taxonomic studies. Through next-generation sequencing, we successfully obtained the complete mitogenome of P. inflata, spanning a length of 16,322 bp. This genome structure encompasses 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 22 transfer RNA genes, and two ribosomal RNA genes. The phylogenetic analysis, based on a dataset of 13 PCG sequences, illuminated the phylogenetic relationships of P. inflata with other species of class Asteroidea and a species of echinoderm classes. The maximum likelihood phylogenetic tree showed that P. inflata closely clustered with Linckia laevigata. By revealing its mitochondrial genome and positioning it within the Asteroidea lineage, this study provides insights into the phylogenetic context of P. inflata.

Taxonomic guide and historical review of starfishes in northeastern Brazil (Echinodermata, Asteroidea).

Project description:Presently more than 1900 species of sea stars are recognized, of which 77 are recorded for the coast of Brazil. Although the first starfish record in Brazil was published 363 years ago, our knowledge of this fauna remains unsatisfactory from a systematic and ecological point of view, particularly in the north and northeastern regions of the country. This study provides the first annotated list of sea stars from northeastern Brazil. Material described herein is housed at the collections of the Federal University of Paraíba, Federal University of Sergipe, and the Federal University of Bahia, Museum of Zoology of the University of São Paulo and Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. Twenty-one species were identified, belonging to 12 genera, 10 families, and 5 orders. Descriptions of species are provided. Three new occurrences were recorded for northeast Brazil: Astropectenalligator, Luidialudwigiscotti, and Mithrodiaclavigera. Highest diversities of Asteroidea were encountered for the states of Bahia (n = 14 spp), Paraíba (n = 12 spp) and Pernambuco (n = 9 spp). No species were recorded for the states of Maranhão and Sergipe. Sandy substrates and depths below 10 m were the least sampled areas over the continental shelf. Herein we provide a first panorama on the fauna of Asteroidea occurring in the northeast region of Brazil, hopefully to function as a basic reference for biodiversity studies in this poorly studied area.

Complete mitochondrial genome of a sea cucumber, Euapta godeffroyi (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea, Apodida, Synaptidae).

Project description:We determined the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a holothurian Euapta godeffroyi belonging to the order Apodida. The complete mitogenome of E. godeffroyi was 16,410 bp in length and consisted of 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. The orders of PCGs and rRNAs did not match those of any recorded holothurian mitogenomes. The maximum likelihood (ML) phylogenetic tree placed E. godeffroyi as the sister group to chiridotid species and supported the monophyly of the order Apodida.
