The targeted inactivation of individual oncogenes can elicit regression of cancers through a phenomenon called oncogene addiction. Oncogene addiction is mediated by cell-autonomous and immune-dependent mechanisms. Therapeutic resistance to oncogene inactivation leads to recurrence but can be counteracted by immune surveillance.
