Estimation of waste outflows for multiple product types in China from 2010-2050.

ABSTRACT: Material flow has been accelerated from underground natural minerals and is accumulating as aboveground waste stock. China is not only the largest producer and consumer of material-driven products, but also the largest generator of product waste. No official annual product waste data are released for China, which creates challenges especially in light of China's emerging waste management policies. Previous studies have presented only estimations of waste streams for single products. In this study, we considered three product types and 33 technological products and collected all the available data. A Kuznets curve and Bass diffusion model were employed to forecast their future consumption. Based on urban consumption metabolism, we created one systematic estimation model of product waste generation related to material flow and social regulation. Typical technological product waste outflows were estimated from 2010 to 2050, which can assist further material flow and environmental impact research, as well as waste management policy-making and technology development. The created model can be potentially extended to other types of product waste estimation.

Project description:Standard occupancy models enable unbiased estimation of occupancy by accounting for observation errors such as missed detections (false negatives) and, less commonly, incorrect detections (false positives). Occupancy models are fitted to data from repeated site visits in which surveyors record evidence of species presence. Use of indirect sign (e.g., scat, tracks) as evidence of presence can vastly improve survey efficiency for inconspicuous species but can also introduce additional sources of error. We developed a "multi-sign" occupancy approach to model the detection process separately for unique sign types and used this method to improve estimates of occupancy dynamics for an inconspicuous species, the American pika (Ochotona princeps). We investigated how estimates of pika occupancy and environmental drivers differed under four increasingly realistic representations of the observation process: (1) perfect detection (commonly assumed for modeling pika occupancy), (2) standard occupancy model (single observation process without possibility of false detection), (3) multi-sign with no false detections (non-false positive model), and (4) multi-sign with false detections (full model). For the multi-sign occupancy models, we modeled the detection of each sign type (fresh scat, fresh haypiles, pika calls, and pika sightings) separately as a function of climatic and environmental covariates. Estimates of occupancy processes and inferences about environmental drivers were sensitive to different detection models. Simplified representations of the detection processes generally resulted in higher occupancy estimates and higher turnover rates than the full multi-sign model. Environmental drivers also varied in their influence on occupancy models, where (e.g.) forb cover was estimated to more strongly influence occupancy in the full multi-sign model than the simpler models. As has been reported previously in other contexts, unmodeled heterogeneity in the observation process can lead to biases in occupancy processes and uncertainty in the relationships between occupancy and environmental covariates. Overall, our multi-sign approach to dynamic occupancy modeling, which accounts for spatio-temporal variation in reliability among sign types, has strong potential to generate more realistic estimates of occupancy dynamics for inconspicuous species.

Project description:BackgroundStroke is the leading cause of death in China, and predicting the stroke burden could provide essential information guiding the setting of medium- and long-term health policies and priorities. The study aimed to project trends associated with stroke burden in China through 2050, not only in terms of incidence and mortality but also for prevalence and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs).MethodsData on stroke rates in incidence, prevalence, deaths, and DALYs in China between 1990 and 2019 were obtained from a recent Global Burden of Disease study. Demographic-specific trends in rates over time were estimated using three models: the loglinear model, the Lee-Carter model, and a functional time series model. The mean absolute percentage error and the root mean squared error were used for model selection. Projections up to 2050 were estimated using the best fitting model. United Nations population data were used to project the absolute numbers through 2050.ResultsFrom 2019 to 2050, the crude rates for all measures of the stroke burden are projected to increase continuously among both men and women. We project that compared with those in 2019, the incidence, prevalence, deaths, and DALYs because of stroke in China in 2050 will increase by 55.58%, 119.16%, 72.15%, and 20.04%, respectively; the corresponding increases in number were 2.19, 34.27, 1.58, and 9.21 million. The age-standardized rate is projected to substantially decline for incidence (8.94%), death (40.37%), and DALYs (43.47%), but the age-standardized prevalence rate is predicted to increase by 10.82%. By 2050, the burden of stroke among the population aged ≥65 years will increase significantly: by 104.70% for incidence, by 218.48% for prevalence, by 100.00% for death, and by 58.93% for DALYs.ConclusionsWith the aging population in China increasing over the next three decades, the burden of stroke will be markedly increased. Continuous efforts are needed to improve stroke health care and secondary prevention, especially for older adults.

Project description:BackgroundHemozoin is considered a waste byproduct of heme detoxification following hemoglobin digestion; consequently, the biological functions of hemozoin in hemozoin-producing organisms have often been overlooked. However, recent findings indicate that Schistosoma hemozoin facilitates the transfer of iron from erythrocytes to eggs through its formation and degradation, thereby increasing interest in the role of malarial hemozoin.MethodsUsing transmission electron microscopy, we compared the formation of Schistosoma hemozoin and malaria hemozoin. Through transcriptome analysis of different stages of P. falciparum 3D7WT and P. falciparum 3D7C580Y,- where the latter serves as a control with reduced hemozoin production, -we analyzed expression patterns of genes related to DNA synthesis, iron, and heme utilization. Using light microscopy, we observed hemozoin aggregation following artemether treatment, and macrophage morphology after ingesting hemozoin in vivo and in vitro.ResultsSimilar to Schistosoma hemozoin, malaria hemozoin consists of heme aggregation and a lipid matrix, likely involved in lipid processing and the utilization of heme and iron. Transcriptome analysis reveals that during the trophozoite stage, the expression levels of these genes in P. falciparum 3D7WT and P. falciparum 3D7C580Y are higher than those during the schizont stage. Correspondingly, less hemozoin was detected at the trophozoite stage, while more was observed during the schizont stage. These results suggest that when more heme and iron are utilized, less heme is available for hemozoin formation. Conversely, when less heme and iron are utilized, they can accumulate for hemozoin formation during the schizont stage, likely benefiting lipid remodeling. Disruption of heme utilization and hemozoin aggregation may lead to parasite death. In addition, the hemozoin released by schizonts can impair macrophage functions, potentially protecting merozoites from phagocytosis. Furthermore, it may be carried by gametocytes into the next host, fulfilling their requirements for iron and heme during their development in mosquitoes.ConclusionsHemozoin is not a waste byproduct of heme detoxification but instead plays a crucial role in the parasite's life cycle.

Project description:PurposeFirst, to investigate the utilization rate and effect of proven myopic interventions. Second, to predict the prevalence of myopia and high myopia, as well as Years Lived with Disability (YLD) caused by an uncorrected refractive error in children and teens in Eastern China from 2010 to 2050 under different interventions.Methods(1) The surveillance of common diseases among children and adolescents in Jiangsu Province from 2010 to 2021 provides the database for myopia screening and intervention utilization surveys. (2) The National Bureau of Statistics and the Global Burden of Disease Study 2016 (GBD2016) are the foundation for the estimated myopes and YLD. (3) A systematic review provides the strong or weak impact of intervention in the prediction model. (4) The trend of screening myopia from 2010 to 2050 under various treatments is predicted using a GM (1,1) model.ResultsBy the year 2050, myopia is expected to affect 8,568,305 (7-12 years old) and 15,766,863 (13-18 years old) children and adolescents, respectively (95% CI: 8,398,977-8,737,633). The utilization prevalence of myopia-proven interventions for myopic children included outdoor activities, orthokeratology lenses, atropine treatment, contact lenses, frame glasses, and eye exercises, with respective rates of 31.9-33.1, 2.1-2.3, 6.0-7.5, 2.2-2.7, 60.4-62.2, and 64.7-72.5%. All interventions have substantial effects on myopia after parental myopia and behavior pattern adjustment, including physical activity, near work, dietary pattern, and sleep. Under strong intervention, the estimated reduced myopia prevalence by the year 2050 is 1,259,086 (95% CI: 1,089,758-1,428,414) for children aged 7-12, and 584,785 (95% CI: 562,748-606,823) for children aged 13-18, respectively.ConclusionAmong myopic Chinese children and adolescents, the use rates and effects of proven myopia interventions vary. Under the present intervention strategy, the prevalence of myopia and high myopia will increase from 2010 to 2050. The overall number of myopic people can be greatly decreased by implementing timely, steady, comprehensive interventions.
