Exposure of the fruit surface to moisture during early development is causal in russeting of apple (<i>Malus</i> × <i>domestica</i> Borkh.). Moisture exposure results in formation of microcracks and decreased cuticle thickness. Periderm differentiation begins in the hypodermis, but only after discontinuation of moisture exposure.
